Because limited dragons can rotate in and out of availability, the first step is always confirming that Viridian is currently breedable before spending gems, boosts, or long breeding slots.
To get the Viridian Dragon, you’ll need to know the required breeding pair, where to breed it, how long the result takes, and what options exist if breeding does not work out. Events, market returns, and special limited-time promotions can also provide alternate paths, so checking current in-game sources can save time and resources.

What Is the Viridian Dragon?
The Viridian Dragon is a limited dragon in DragonVale associated with the Hidden and Plant elements. Its design matches its name: green, leafy, and natural-looking, with a camouflaged appearance that fits the Hidden element theme. Because it is not always available year-round, players usually need to breed it during a specific availability window or wait for it to return through an event, a limited-time re-release, or a special market offering.

In practical terms, the Viridian Dragon matters because it is one of the dragons tied to a very specific breeding requirement. You cannot simply combine any two Plant-element dragons and expect a chance at it. To breed a Viridian Dragon, you need to use the correct parent pair when it is available: the Malachite Dragon and the Darkmatter Dragon, in either order. This makes preparation especially useful, since both required parents must already be in your park or otherwise available through co-op breeding if the game permits that option for your chosen setup.

| Elements | Hidden and Plant |
| Required breeding pair | Malachite Dragon + Darkmatter Dragon |
| Availability | Only during its active limited window, event return, or special re-release |
The limited status is the main thing to keep in mind. If the Viridian Dragon is not currently active in the game, the correct breeding pair will not normally produce it. In that case, the same combination may still generate other possible offspring from the parents’ elements and breeding pools, but not Viridian itself. Before spending gems, using speed-ups, or dedicating an upgraded breeding cave to attempts, check the in-game Dragonarium, event shop, limited section, or official game announcements to confirm that Viridian is actually obtainable at that time.
Like many limited dragons, the Viridian Dragon may also appear through alternate routes depending on the current event. It can sometimes return in an event market for event currency, show up as part of a limited-time comeback, or be included in special sales or reward systems. Those options change from event to event, so breeding is not always the only path. Still, when it is breedable, knowing that Viridian requires Malachite + Darkmatter is the starting point for every serious attempt to add it to your park.
Required Breeding Combination
To breed a Viridian Dragon, use a Dodo Dragon and a Malachite Dragon in any order at a breeding location. The parents do not need to be placed in a specific left or right slot; a Dodo Dragon paired with a Malachite Dragon works the same as a Malachite Dragon paired with a Dodo Dragon. What matters is that these are the two exact required parents.
The Viridian Dragon is not bred by simply combining its elements with any matching pair. If your game lists Viridian as a limited or gemstone-style dragon, the breeding rule is usually stricter than standard hybrids: you must use the assigned parent dragons rather than experimenting with other Earth, Air, Metal, or related element combinations. Before spending gems or speed-ups, check that both selected parents are the correct species and not lookalike hybrids with similar colors or elements.
- Required parent 1: Dodo Dragon
- Required parent 2: Malachite Dragon
- Breeding order: Either order is valid
- Availability: Only breedable while the Viridian Dragon is active or available in your version of the game
Availability is the part many players miss. Even with the correct Dodo and Malachite pairing, the Viridian Dragon generally cannot be bred outside its active availability window unless the game has brought it back through a limited-time event, seasonal return, special promotion, or anniversary-style rerelease. If the dragon is not currently listed as available in the Dragonarium, event menu, or market, the correct pairing may still produce other offspring but not Viridian.
For the best attempt, use the highest-level Dodo and Malachite Dragons you reasonably can, especially if your game gives improved breeding odds for higher-level parents. Level 11, 16, or elder-level parents are commonly used by players when trying for rare limited dragons, depending on what your park can support. This does not guarantee the Viridian Dragon, but it can help maximize your chance per attempt if level-based odds apply.
Best Breeding Locations to Use
The Viridian Dragon can be bred in the standard breeding places that allow you to pair the required parents. In most parks, that means using the Breeding Cave or the Epic Breeding Island. If the Viridian Dragon is currently available, either location can produce it as long as you use the correct breeding combination and both parent dragons meet any level requirements for breeding.
Rank #2
The Epic Breeding Island is usually the better place to dedicate to Viridian attempts if you have it unlocked. It gives you an extra breeding slot separate from the regular Breeding Cave, which lets you keep your main cave free for other goals or run two different limited-dragon attempts at once. If your island or cave has been upgraded, the shorter breeding and incubation times also help because failed attempts clear faster, giving you more chances during a limited availability window.
Breeding Time and How to Identify the Result
After you place the correct parent dragons in a breeding location, the easiest way to tell whether you may have produced a Viridian Dragon is to check the breeding timer. In DragonVale, the Viridian Dragon has a distinctive incubation pattern tied to its limited status, so the timer is your first clue before the egg ever reaches the Nursery. If the breeding cave shows the Viridian Dragon’s expected breeding duration, you have a strong sign that the attempt succeeded.
The Viridian Dragon’s standard breeding time is 15 hours. If you are using an upgraded breeding location, such as the Enchanted Breeding Cave or Epic Breeding Island upgrade, the displayed time may be reduced. With the usual 20% time reduction, the timer appears as 12 hours instead. Because several dragons can share similar or nearby timers, the time alone is not an absolute confirmation, but it is the most practical way to identify a likely result before hatching.
| Location or Condition | Timer to Look For | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Breeding Cave or regular Epic Breeding Island | 15 hours | Possible Viridian Dragon result |
| Upgraded breeding location | 12 hours | Possible Viridian Dragon result with reduced breeding time |
| Different timer | Varies | Another dragon from the breeding pool |
Tips to Improve Your Chances
Getting a Viridian Dragon usually comes down to repeated attempts with the correct breeding pair while the dragon is available. Since limited and seasonal dragons can share elements with many other possible results, you should expect several misses before you see the breeding time you want. The best approach is to keep your breeding setup focused, reduce downtime between attempts, and avoid changing combinations unless you are sure the dragon’s required pairing or availability has changed.Use the required pair every time
Stick with the specific breeding combination required for the Viridian Dragon rather than experimenting with dragons that merely contain similar elements. If the Viridian Dragon requires named parents, both dragons must be used exactly as specified. If it requires elements instead, choose high-level dragons that provide only the needed elements when possible, since extra elements can add more unwanted outcomes to the breeding pool. Before spending gems or boosts, confirm that the Viridian Dragon is currently breedable in your version of the game.- Breed during its active availability window: If the Viridian Dragon is limited-time, breeding attempts outside its return period will not work unless the game specifically says otherwise.
- Use your best breeding cave or island: The Epic Breeding Island, upgraded breeding structures, or special event breeding areas may offer better odds or shorter retry cycles depending on the game’s current rules.
- Level up the parent dragons: Higher-level parents are commonly preferred by players because they may improve rare dragon odds in many breeding systems.
- Keep both breeding slots active: If you have multiple breeding locations, run the Viridian combination in one while using the other for event goals, currency farming, or backup attempts.
Plan around events and limited returns
If the Viridian Dragon is part of a limited event, log in early in the event and start breeding as soon as it becomes available. Waiting until the final day leaves little room for failed attempts, especially if the breeding pool contains several long-timer dragons. During event reruns, the Viridian Dragon may also appear in a market, prize shop, mystery egg, daily reward, or limited bundle. These options can be useful if breeding attempts are going poorly, but compare the cost against other event dragons you may want more.Other Ways to Get a Viridian Dragon
If breeding is not producing the Viridian Dragon during its available window, there are a few other routes that may let you add it to your park. The exact options depend on the current event rotation, whether the dragon has returned for a limited period, and what your game’s market or event shop is offering at the time. Because the Viridian Dragon is typically tied to limited availability, checking the in-game menus during seasonal events is just as as using the correct breeding pair.Event shops and limited-time returns
The most common alternate method is through an event shop. During certain events, returning dragons may be listed for event currency, letting you buy the Viridian Dragon directly instead of relying on breeding odds. If it appears in an event prize list, compare its cost against your expected currency earnings before spending. Direct purchase removes the randomness of breeding, which can make it the better choice if the event is close to ending or if your breeding caves are already occupied.- Check the event market daily: some events unlock categories, dragons, or reward tiers over time.
- Save currency until you are sure: avoid spending early if the Viridian Dragon is your main target.
- Watch for returning dragon weeks: limited dragons often reappear during anniversary-style events, bring-back events, or seasonal reruns.
Buying from the market
When the Viridian Dragon is actively available, it may sometimes be listed in the regular market for gems or another premium currency. This is usually the fastest method, but it is also the most expensive. A market purchase is best reserved for players who strongly want the dragon, have missed several breeding attempts, and do not want to wait for another return. Before buying, confirm that you are selecting the Viridian Dragon itself and not a decoration, pedestal, or similarly named item.Co-op breeding and social options
If the game allows co-op breeding for the Viridian Dragon during its availability period, using a friend’s compatible dragon can help if you do not own one of the required parents or want more breeding attempts running in parallel. Co-op breeding does not guarantee the result, but it can give you another chance while your main breeding cave or island is busy. Choose a friend dragon that fits the required combination as closely as possible, and keep the same pairing active until the dragon leaves availability. Outside of breeding, the safest strategy is to monitor event shops, limited-time market listings, and official return periods. If the Viridian Dragon is not currently listed anywhere and cannot be bred, you will likely need to wait for a future event or limited-time comeback. When it does return, decide early whether you want to breed for it, save event currency for a direct purchase, or use gems to secure it before the availability window closes.Rank #4
