To copy photos, videos, downloads, or documents from a Samsung Galaxy phone to a computer, connect it with a data-capable USB cable, allow access on the phone, and copy the files using File Explorer on Windows or Finder as described in Samsung’s Mac guide. This is a file transfer—not a web download—and copying leaves the originals on the phone.
Copy files over USB
- Connect the phone. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the computer with a compatible data-capable cable. Depending on the devices, you may need an adapter or a different cable. Samsung’s USB transfer instructions describe the process.
- Allow access. If the phone asks whether to allow access to its data, tap “Allow.”
- Choose file transfer if needed. If the phone is set to charge only, open its USB notification and choose “Transferring files” or “MTP.” The exact label can vary with the phone’s software and region.
- Browse and copy the files. On Windows, open File Explorer, select the Galaxy phone, and browse its internal storage. Samsung Australia lists
DCIM > Camerafor camera photos and videos,Downloadfor downloaded files, andDocumentsfor documents. Select the files and copy them to a folder on the computer. Samsung’s Australian instructions are designed for Australian-variant Galaxy devices. - Finish safely. Wait for the copy to complete before disconnecting. If the computer offers an eject or unmount option, use it first. USB transfers may also work in the other direction, but use copy rather than move if you want the phone’s original files to remain in place.
Use Samsung’s Finder method on a Mac
Samsung’s US Mac guide says to open Finder, select the phone under Devices, and drag files to a folder on the Mac. Eject the phone when finished. Recognition and menus can vary by Mac configuration, so Finder may not work identically on every setup.

Find files that are not in the usual folders
Files saved by other apps may not be in DCIM/Camera. To locate a photo or video, open it in Samsung Gallery, swipe up, and check the Path field for its storage location. Then browse to that folder on the computer.

If the phone charges but no files appear
- Unlock the phone and approve the data-access prompt if it appears.
- Open the USB notification and select “Transferring files” or “MTP” rather than charging only.
- Try a cable that supports data transfer; some cables charge but cannot transfer files.
- Connect directly to a computer port instead of a hub.
Samsung lists these checks in its Galaxy-to-PC troubleshooting guidance.

Choose another transfer method when USB is not a fit
| Method | Best suited to | Important limits or setup |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Share | Sending Gallery photos and videos wirelessly to a compatible device | Compatibility and setup depend on the devices and software. See Samsung’s sharing options. |
| Phone Link or Link to Windows | Accessing selected phone content and features on Windows 10 or 11 | Available options depend on the Galaxy model and software; it is not universal folder access and is not available on Mac. See Samsung’s Phone Link guidance. |
| Bluetooth | Sending selected files without a cable | Pair the devices and prepare Windows to receive the files. Samsung Support cautions: “Bluetooth transfers may be slow and unreliable.” See Samsung’s Bluetooth guidance. |
| Cloud storage | Making files available through an account across devices | Samsung names Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and Verizon Cloud as options. Setup requires the relevant account or service and may use internet data. See Samsung’s sharing options. |
| USB flash storage or SD card | Using external storage as an intermediate copy | Samsung describes copying or moving files through My Files, but support depends on the device and storage. See Samsung’s external-storage guidance. |
| Smart Switch | Backing up, restoring, or migrating device data | For a one-time copy of specific files or folders, manual copying may be more appropriate. See Samsung’s transfer guidance. |
| Samsung Flow or DeX | Transfers or connected-device features in compatible Windows or Galaxy Book setups | Availability and DeX for PC support have device and software restrictions; check Samsung’s current compatibility guidance at Samsung Support. |
Know the limits of Samsung’s drag-and-drop guidance
Samsung US Support states that its described drag-and-drop method supports up to 100 files at a time, with a maximum of 512 MB per file; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. These figures apply to that method, not to every transfer route, device, or software version. Samsung’s guidance does not establish a general transfer-speed benchmark.
