Gigapixels per second (Gpix/s) measures a rate: how many billions of pixels a system captures, processes, transmits, or reconstructs in one second. For camera sensor throughput, calculate pixels per frame × frames per second, using figures from the same camera mode, then divide by one billion. The number is meaningful only when you know which stage and operating conditions it describes.
How is gigapixels per second calculated?
A pixel count describes the spatial size of one image. Adding “per second” makes it a throughput rate: the number of pixels handled over time. For a camera sensor, the calculation is:

For example, a camera mode that captures 4 million pixels per frame at 500 frames per second would have a calculated sensor throughput of 2 Gpix/s. This is an illustration of the formula, not a claim about a particular camera. Vision Research’s 2025 high-speed-camera white paper defines sensor throughput using maximum sensor resolution multiplied by maximum frame rate at that resolution.

Why must resolution and frame rate come from the same mode?
A camera may reach a higher frame rate by recording a smaller active image area. Multiplying a camera’s highest stated resolution by its highest advertised frame rate can therefore produce a figure that no operating mode actually achieves. Use the resolution and frame rate specified together for the mode being measured. For comparisons, also check the active area and whether the figures describe sensor capture or another stage.
What can a Gpix/s figure describe?
The unit can be applied at different points in an imaging system. Those figures are not interchangeable: the same unit does not make sensor capture, image processing, link transmission, and reconstructed information equivalent measurements.

Camera sensor capture
For high-speed cameras, sensor throughput commonly means the sensor’s pixel count per frame multiplied by its frame rate at that resolution. Confirm the operating mode before comparing two such figures.
Image processing
A processor or image signal processor (ISP) may report how quickly it handles image data. Qualcomm’s December 2020 Snapdragon 888 announcement attributed 2.7 Gpix/s to its Spectra 580 ISP. That is a processing claim, not a camera sensor measurement.

Display-link image content
A display interface can report the rate of image content it supports. MIPI Alliance’s 17 August 2021 announcement said DSI-2 v2.0 could support more than 6 Gpix/s of uncompressed image content when coupled with MIPI D-PHY v3.0 or C-PHY v2.0/v2.1. This describes a specified interface configuration, not sensor capture. The MIPI DSI-2 specification page lists DSI-2 v2.2, dated July 2024, as its current version; the cited announcement’s more-than-6-Gpix/s statement specifically concerns v2.0 and the named physical-layer interfaces.
Reconstructed imaging information
Some computational-imaging research reports throughput in terms of reconstructed information rather than raw sensor samples. A 2026 Nature Communications paper on video-rate gigapixel ptychography reports approximately 20.8 Gpix/s of space-bandwidth-product throughput for its experimental system. The paper describes a 30,480 × 22,800-pixel reconstruction at 30 frames per second. This is a reconstruction metric, not a general camera sensor specification.

Why do published Gpix/s figures differ?
Published examples illustrate the range of meanings, not a ranking of comparable products or technologies.
| Reported figure | What it describes | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 6 Gpix/s | Uncompressed image content over a display interface | MIPI Alliance, 2021; DSI-2 v2.0 coupled with the specified D-PHY or C-PHY versions. |
| 2.7 Gpix/s | Image signal processor rate | Qualcomm’s December 2020 announcement for the Snapdragon 888 Spectra 580 ISP. |
| 16 Gpix/s | Camera data throughput | Teledyne Vision Solutions’ Linea HS2 product page describes a 16k, 1 MHz configuration; the page does not state a publication date. |
| Approximately 20.8 Gpix/s | Reconstructed space-bandwidth-product throughput | Nature Communications, 2026; an experimental computational-ptychography system. |
Because these values refer to different system stages, definitions, configurations, and—in some cases—different types of image information, they cannot establish which system is “faster” overall. Even within one category, compare the specific mode and conditions rather than relying on a headline maximum.
Quick Recap
What should you check before comparing two figures?
- What is counted? Identify whether the rate refers to sensor samples, ISP processing, transmitted image content, or reconstructed pixels or information.
- Which operating mode? For camera throughput, confirm resolution and frame rate are achieved together, and check the active image area.
- Is the content compressed? A link’s stated rate may refer specifically to uncompressed image content or to a different data definition.
- Which interface configuration? For display-link claims, check the specification version and required physical-layer interfaces.
- How is reconstructed output defined? For computational imaging, determine whether the figure counts sensor samples or reconstructed effective information and note the reconstruction method.
