Downloading the video means giving the manifest to a downloader that can fetch the media segments it points to, usually with yt-dlp, and merging separate audio and video streams with FFmpeg when needed. The steps below cover the workflow, the checks to run first, and what to do when the download fails.
What an .mpd file actually contains
MPD stands for Media Presentation Description. It is the manifest for a DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) presentation. The file describes the available streams, their resolutions and languages, and where the media segments can be found. The segments themselves are separate files, so a saved .mpd on its own usually will not play.

FFmpeg’s documentation for its DASH muxer describes the output as an MPD manifest plus segment files, and explains that adaptation sets can group streams encoded at different sizes or audio tracks in different languages. That structure explains most download problems: a downloader has to read the manifest, choose streams, fetch the segments, and assemble them.

Step-by-step: downloading from an MPD URL
Use an MPD address that a service provides or that you are authorized to access. Do not assume every .mpd address is public or permanent; access rules and expiry depend on the service that issues it.

- Install yt-dlp and FFmpeg. yt-dlp is distributed from its project page at github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp. FFmpeg is required only when yt-dlp must merge separate video and audio streams, but installing it up front avoids a second failed attempt.
- Inspect the available formats. Run:
yt-dlp -F "MPD_URL"The output lists each format with an ID. If video and audio appear as separate entries, the manifest is using separate adaptation sets and you will need to merge them.
- Download with automatic selection. To let yt-dlp pick the best available quality:
yt-dlp "MPD_URL"If the result has both picture and sound, you are done.
- Merge separate streams when needed. If step 2 showed separate video and audio, request both and let FFmpeg combine them:
yt-dlp -f "bestvideo+bestaudio" "MPD_URL"yt-dlp’s documentation states that combining multiple formats this way requires FFmpeg.
- Select a specific format. To target a resolution or stream, use the format ID from the
-Flist instead of a generic selector. Format IDs are specific to each manifest, so a code that worked on one site will not necessarily work on another.
Why the download can produce no audio
A file with picture but no sound almost always means the audio was a separate format that was never requested or never merged. Check the output of -F. If audio is listed separately, rerun the command with bestvideo+bestaudio and confirm FFmpeg is installed and reachable from your command line.
Troubleshooting a failed MPD download
A failure does not, by itself, identify the cause. The following checks cover the most common possibilities, in the order that is quickest to rule out:

- Incomplete or altered URL. Confirm the full manifest address was copied, including any query string. Manifests are often paired with tokens or parameters that must stay intact.
- Access restriction. The stream may require a login, a session, or a referring page. The downloader cannot supply rights you do not have; if the service requires authentication, use the access method the service provides.
- Expired or inaccessible URL. A manifest copied from a page earlier may no longer resolve. Request a fresh URL from the same source.
- Unrecognized manifest layout. Some manifests use structures the downloader does not handle. Update yt-dlp to the current release and retry. If it still fails, the error output and service name are needed to narrow the cause.
- Encryption. Some DASH presentations use encryption. MPEG’s overview of MPEG-DASH identifies a standard part covering encryption and authentication of DASH segments. A failure linked to encryption is not something this workflow can resolve, and this article does not describe ways to bypass access controls.
Browser playback is a different task
MDN states that browsers do not natively support DASH. Playing an MPD inside a web page requires a JavaScript library such as dash.js, which reads the manifest and feeds the segments to a <video> element. That is useful for building a player, but it does not save a local file. Downloading is handled by a command-line tool like yt-dlp.
Permission and use
A working command does not establish that you may save or reuse a given stream. Downloads should be limited to content you own, content the rights holder has made available for download, or content your own license allows you to keep. Check the service’s terms before saving anything.
