Scientists cannot usually observe nursing in a fossil, and no fossil mammary glands or milk have been found. Instead, they infer whether an ancient animal likely fed its young milk by combining clues from teeth, anatomy, growth and chemical traces in fossil tissues. Each clue is indirect: together they can support an explanation of how young animals were nourished, but they do not show a particular extinct animal nursing.
Can scientists find evidence of breastfeeding in fossils?
Not as a preserved act of nursing. Milk and mammary glands are soft tissues, and the Natural History Museum in London says that mammalian glands have not been preserved in any fossils found to date. Fossils can preserve hard parts such as teeth and bones, and under some circumstances tissues can retain chemical signals. Those records may reveal development or diet, but they are not a fossilized bottle of milk or a direct record of an adult feeding a young animal.

The distinction matters because evidence that an animal belonged to a mammalian group is not the same as evidence that it nursed. The museum’s 2022 account of Brasilodon, whose fossils date to about 225 million years ago, describes dental evidence used to argue for its mammalian status. It should not be treated as proof that a particular Brasilodon individual was nursed. The museum’s report explains the dental evidence and its classification claim.
So the practical question is not usually “Where is the milk?” It is “Do several independent clues fit a life history in which the young depended on milk before or while they began eating other foods?” The answer may be more persuasive for a lineage or broad group than for one individual fossil.

How do scientists tell whether an ancient animal could nurse its young?
Researchers assemble an argument from evidence that records different parts of an animal’s life. Teeth can preserve a developmental sequence; skeletal anatomy can offer clues about body form and reproduction; and chemical analyses may reveal dietary change. No single feature is a universal nursing test, and the same evidence can bear on more than one question.
| Evidence | What it preserves or measures | How it bears on nursing | Main interpretive limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tooth development and replacement | Hard structures and their developmental patterns, including the timing of tooth formation, eruption, replacement and wear | Can help reconstruct growth and feeding transitions; delayed development or limited replacement has been interpreted as consistent with milk feeding | Teeth do not preserve milk itself, and a pattern is an indirect clue rather than a direct observation of nursing |
| Body size, growth and reproductive anatomy | Body form and preserved skeletal anatomy | Can contribute to a life-history interpretation when considered with dental evidence | These are anatomical clues; they do not preserve lactation or parental behavior |
| Stable isotopes and trace elements | Chemical signals in tissues such as teeth and bone | May help reconstruct changes in diet associated with breastfeeding and weaning | Interpretation depends on the proxy, preservation and biological processes such as metabolism |
| Very young fossil animals | Evidence about early growth and the timing of life stages | Can help reconstruct reproduction and development in a group | Perinates do not directly reveal the full sequence of reproductive changes or prove nursing |
The strongest case is therefore cumulative. A developmental pattern in teeth, an anatomical context and a chemical signal do not all answer the same question, but agreement among them can make a milk-feeding explanation more plausible than any one clue by itself. Researchers also have to account for what a fossil preserves: a missing feature may simply be unavailable to study, not evidence that it never existed.
How can teeth show whether a baby animal drank milk?
Teeth are useful because they are hard tissues that commonly preserve patterns of development. Scientists can compare juvenile and adult fossils, looking at when teeth formed and erupted, whether and how they were replaced, and what wear may indicate about use. The sequence can help researchers reconstruct how an animal grew and when its feeding might have changed.

A young animal that had not yet developed the teeth needed for an adult diet may have relied on another source of nourishment. In early mammaliaforms, delayed tooth development has been discussed as suggestive of milk intake. Limited tooth replacement has also been treated as one clue consistent with dependence on milk during early development. These interpretations concern the role teeth could play in a broader life history; a tooth does not contain a record of milk consumption.
Tooth evidence also needs to be read carefully because it can address more than nursing. In the Brasilodon case, dental records were used in an argument about whether the animal was a mammal. That taxonomic inference and a claim about how its young were fed are separate conclusions. The same fossil feature should not be made to prove both without additional evidence.
A review of lactation evolution discusses how tooth development can inform questions about feeding and life history across mammalian groups. Oftedal’s 2020 review provides context for why developmental evidence is useful, while the interpretation of a particular extinct animal still depends on its fossils and the other clues available.

What can anatomy and growth reveal?
Researchers can place teeth in the context of body size, growth patterns and reproductive anatomy. Those traits help describe how an animal lived and developed; when several point in a compatible direction, they can strengthen an evolutionary account of how young were nourished. They do not reveal a nursing event directly, and an anatomical feature should not be treated as a milk gland simply because it is associated with a proposed reproductive strategy.

Olav T. Oftedal’s 2002 review argues that advanced Triassic therapsids, including cynodonts, almost certainly secreted nutrient-rich milk. The review discusses small body size, epipubic bones and limited tooth replacement in advanced cynodonts and early mammaliaforms as clues consistent with milk feeding. This is an interpretation of anatomy and life history, not preservation of milk, mammary glands or observed behavior. Read the review on synapsid evolution and the origin of the mammary gland.
Growth evidence may help describe the pace and sequence of development, but it does not automatically identify the food responsible for a developmental pattern. A review of milk secretion and its ancient origins discusses late-Triassic mammaliaforms, about 210 million years ago, as small, endothermic animals with rapid growth and limited tooth replacement. Oftedal interpreted those features as consistent with delayed feeding and reliance on milk. The date refers to the animals discussed in that evolutionary interpretation; it is not a measured date for the origin of nursing. Oftedal’s 2012 review sets out that argument.

Can fossil chemistry reveal breastfeeding or weaning?
Sometimes chemical signals in ancient tissues can help reconstruct changes in diet. Stable isotopes and trace elements have been studied in bone and teeth, and tooth enamel can offer fine resolution for examining change over time. If a tissue records a shift in diet, that shift may help researchers assess a transition from milk to other foods.
But a chemical signal is not a label that says “breastfed.” Researchers have to interpret what the measured proxy represents in an animal’s biology and whether the signal survived in a form that can still be read. Proxy choice matters, and metabolism can affect how trace elements are incorporated into tissues. A review of breastfeeding and weaning reconstruction notes that trace-element metabolism needs further study and that combining different proxies can provide complementary views. Tsutaya and Yoneda review stable-isotope and trace-element approaches.
In practice, chemistry is most useful when it complements the fossil’s anatomy and developmental evidence. A chemical pattern may support a change in diet, while teeth or growth evidence may help establish when in development that change occurred. The more independent clues converge, the more complete the interpretation can be; uncertainty remains if preservation or the biological meaning of a proxy is unclear.

What can fossils of very young animals tell researchers?
Very young fossil animals, sometimes described as perinates, can provide evidence about reproduction and early growth. They may help researchers investigate when developmental stages occurred and how a group’s life history was organized. But a young fossil is not itself evidence of milk feeding: it records an animal’s presence and condition, not necessarily what it consumed or how it was cared for.
That limitation is especially important when reconstructing major evolutionary transitions. Research on Jurassic stem-mammal perinates notes that the timing and sequence of changes leading to mammalian reproductive strategies remain unknown because direct fossil evidence is lacking. Hoffman and colleagues’ 2018 study discusses Jurassic stem-mammal perinates and the limits of what they reveal.
How strong is an inference that an extinct animal nursed?
Strength depends on what exactly is being claimed. “This animal belongs to a mammalian group,” “this lineage likely fed young with milk,” and “this individual nursed” are claims at different levels. Fossils may support a broad evolutionary interpretation without establishing a behavior for one animal. The evidence should be described at the same scale as the conclusion it supports.
- Direct observation: Not available for extinct animals in the fossil record discussed here. No fossil mammary glands or milk have been found, according to the Natural History Museum.
- Developmental inference: Tooth formation, eruption and replacement can help reconstruct growth and feeding transitions, but cannot show milk directly.
- Life-history interpretation: Body size and reproductive anatomy can fit a milk-feeding explanation, particularly when considered with dental patterns.
- Dietary proxy: Isotopes and trace elements may register diet changes, but proxy selection, preservation and metabolism affect what those changes mean.
- Combined case: Agreement among different evidence types can support an inference more strongly than one clue alone, without turning it into direct proof.
There is no single measured percentage or universal numerical cutoff that decides whether an extinct species nursed. A responsible account explains which fossils were studied, what each clue indicates, whether the claim concerns an individual or a lineage, and what the evidence cannot establish.
How to read claims about nursing in ancient animals
When a new fossil finding is described as evidence of breastfeeding, check what was actually observed and what conclusion researchers drew from it. A report about tooth development may concern classification or growth; a chemical study may concern diet change. Those findings can matter to the nursing question, but they are not interchangeable.
- Look for wording such as “consistent with milk feeding” or “supports an inference,” rather than a claim that a fossil directly shows nursing.
- Check whether the evidence is a tooth pattern, skeletal anatomy, growth information or a chemical proxy. Each preserves a different part of the animal’s history.
- Notice whether the conclusion applies to one specimen, a species or a broader lineage. A general evolutionary interpretation does not prove the behavior of an individual.
- Ask whether the account distinguishes mammalian classification from evidence about feeding. A fossil’s status as a mammal does not, by itself, demonstrate that a particular young animal was nursed.
- Give more weight to a case that explains how independent clues fit together and acknowledges the limits of preservation and interpretation.
The central finding is necessarily indirect: hard tissues and chemical records can preserve clues about development and diet, while the soft tissues and behavior that would show nursing have not been found in fossils to date. Scientists infer milk feeding by evaluating those clues together and keeping the conclusion proportionate to the evidence.
