Consumer AI is no longer used only to get answers or finish tasks. Some people also turn to chatbots to discuss feelings, talk through personal problems, or seek a sense of connection. That shift reflects how users experience conversational AI—not evidence that the software has emotions or can replace human relationships.
What changes when an AI assistant becomes a companion?
An assistant is used to answer requests or support tasks. A companion is an AI that someone uses for social, emotional, or personal interaction, whether or not the product was designed specifically for that purpose. The distinction is about the role the system plays for its user, not necessarily a different kind of technology.

Conversational interfaces let people return to the same system for different needs: a quick answer, help with creative work, or a conversation about something personal. A responsive exchange can feel familiar, and a user may experience it as understanding or connection. That experience does not establish that the system has human feelings or reciprocal understanding.

Companionship is also distinct from agentic AI. A companion describes a social or emotional use; an agentic system may plan multiple steps, pursue a goal, coordinate across services, or take actions. The UK Department for Business and Trade’s March 2026 report says consumer-facing AI has largely functioned as a tool supporting decisions, with people retaining coordination and follow-through; greater agency is a possible next stage.

How common is social and emotional use?
A September 2026 report from the Imagining the Digital Future Center and Elon University Poll, based on a representative survey of 1,000 U.S. adults fielded in May 2026, found that 27% of internet-using U.S. adults said they had social interactions with large language models. This is a measure of reported social interaction, not proof that users regard every chatbot as a companion.
Different percentages in that report apply to its defined group of AI companion users, not to all U.S. adults. Within that group, 50% said they used AI to talk through personal problems or feelings, 36% felt emotionally connected to at least one AI tool or chatbot, and 31% considered their chatbot a friend. Those figures describe distinct responses and should not be combined into a single estimate of how many people have an AI relationship.

Use for practical help remains central. In Kantar’s online survey of more than 10,000 respondents across ten markets, conducted April 11 to May 2, 2025, 81% of people who had ever used an AI tool reported recent use of an AI assistant, and about three in four reported weekly or daily use. Speed was the most valued assistant capability, while interpersonal support ranked among the least appealing. Kantar’s broad assistant category includes voice assistants, chatbots, virtual assistants, and AI shopping tools, so its results do not measure the same population as the narrower companion-user survey.
Why can conversational AI feel personal?
Conversation is a familiar way to ask for help, and a system that responds in context can make successive interactions feel more continuous. People can use the same interface for an instrumental task one moment and personal reflection the next. That flexibility helps explain how a tool can become socially meaningful to some users without being designed as a companion.

When you miss someone: fill the 8-inch screen with their photos, and let the words "I'm here" flow gently from the stereo speakers—the whole room is filled with their presence.
- You can see the data: your privacy is yours to decide. Those late-night confessions, those vulnerabilities shared only with it, those longings hidden in the chat history—all belong to you, and only to you.
Personalization and memory can contribute to a sense of continuity, but they are not the same as reliable understanding. Nor does a natural-sounding voice establish that a system understands a person as a human would. The UK government’s distinction is useful: conversational interaction concerns how a user engages with AI, while agency concerns whether the system can plan and act. These features can overlap, but one does not prove the other.
What do studies say about emotional effects?
The evidence is early and mixed. A 2025 OpenAI and MIT Media Lab project paired analysis of nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions with targeted user surveys and a randomized controlled trial involving nearly 1,000 participants over four weeks. The authors said affective cues were absent in the vast majority of assessed conversations and emotionally expressive use was concentrated among a small group of heavy users. In the trial, voice-related findings varied: brief voice use was associated with better well-being, while prolonged daily use was associated with worse outcomes. The authors cautioned that some observed relationships were not causal and that the results should not be generalized; the work focused on English-language conversations and U.S. participants and was not peer reviewed at publication.

A separate Microsoft Research exploratory study followed 149 participants for five weeks. Its actively encouraged group was asked to use Copilot, Gemini, Pi, or ChatGPT for social and emotional interaction. That group reported increases of 32.99 percentage points in perceived AI attachment and 25.8 percentage points in perceived AI empathy. These are changes within the study, not population estimates or evidence that all users will experience the same effects.
Together, these studies show why sweeping claims are unwarranted: reported effects can vary with how people use AI and their personal circumstances. Neither study establishes that AI companionship is beneficial or harmful for everyone.

What should users consider when choosing how to use AI?
If you use a conversational AI for personal topics, separate the convenience of a responsive conversation from claims about emotional support or understanding. Useful questions include:
- What do you need? A system that helps with a practical task has a different role from one you use for social or emotional conversation.
- What does it remember? Check the service’s personalization and memory controls, and consider what information you are comfortable sharing.
- What can it do? If it can take actions or coordinate across services, understand what requires your confirmation and how you can review or undo those actions.
- What is the evidence for its claims? A companion persona, fluent conversation, or natural-sounding voice is not by itself evidence of reliable understanding or a proven well-being benefit.
- Does the interaction meet your needs? Notice whether it is useful to you without treating it as a substitute for human relationships or support.
OpenAI and MIT Media Lab put the distinction plainly: “ChatGPT isn’t designed to replace or mimic human relationships, but people may choose to use it that way given its conversational style and expanding capabilities.” That observation describes how users may choose to interact; it is not a claim that AI can provide reciprocal human connection.
