More reactor heat produces more steam to drive the turbine-generator, but the achievable increase depends on the design and condition of each plant. In the United States, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) must approve a license change before the plant can operate above its existing licensed limit.
What is a nuclear power uprate?
A reactor’s operating license sets a maximum thermal power—the rate at which the reactor core can produce heat. A power uprate is a licensed increase to that ceiling at an existing plant. It is different from simply generating more electricity by improving availability or running closer to a limit already in the license.

The NRC glossary puts the distinction plainly: “A ‘power uprate’ only occurs after the NRC approves a commercial nuclear power plant’s request to increase its power.” The statement applies to U.S. commercial plants. Regulations and approval processes differ by country.

In a typical nuclear steam-cycle plant, heat from the reactor turns water into steam. The steam spins a turbine, which drives an electric generator. If the reactor produces more heat, it can produce more steam and potentially more electricity—but only if the rest of the plant can safely accommodate the greater flows and loads.

Depending on the plant and size of the increase, the operator may use more or differently enriched fuel, improve measurements of reactor power, adjust instrumentation settings, or modify equipment in the steam and electrical systems. Components that may need to accommodate higher output include pipes, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, transformers, and generators. Some projects involve modifying or replacing major equipment such as the main turbine. These are possibilities, not a standard parts list for every uprate.
How much more power can an existing nuclear plant produce?
The NRC groups U.S. uprates into three categories. The percentages describe categories, not a guaranteed increase for any particular reactor: each plant’s design margins determine what it can support.

| Uprate category | Typical increase | What it may involve |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement uncertainty recapture (MUR) | Below 2% | More precise reactor-power calculations, including improved measurement of feedwater flow. |
| Stretch | Typically up to 7% | Often instrumentation setpoint changes; generally does not require major modifications. The achievable increase depends on the plant’s design margin. |
| Extended | Beyond the stretch range; approvals have reached as high as 20% | May require substantial balance-of-plant upgrades, such as changes to high-pressure turbines, condensate pumps and motors, generators, or transformers. |
The categories are not rigid promises or universal thresholds. The NRC describes stretch uprates as typically up to 7%; the actual potential is plant-specific. An extended uprate can require significant engineering and equipment work, but the exact scope depends on the facility.

Does a nuclear plant need NRC approval to increase output?
In the United States, yes, if the change raises the maximum power allowed by the operating license. The power limit is reflected in the license and technical specifications; an operator cannot unilaterally exceed it. The licensee submits a request and plant-specific analyses for NRC review. Approval depends on demonstrating that the proposed configuration can continue to operate safely and maintain protections for public health and safety.

This licensing review is why a plant’s theoretical capacity is not the same as permission to produce at that level. The regulator assesses the specific reactor, proposed changes, and supporting safety analyses before the licensed maximum changes.

- RTR Version Stirling Engine Model: No need to assemble, unpack the engine model and get ready to see the wonders of science. Comes with a USB LED lights for you to DIY and experience more fun. This is a very interesting and imaginative toy! It can be used for teaching physics, great to display basic principles of a Stirling engine and to show the art of design.
- Good Look Stirling Engine Mode: The bottom of the model is made of high-quality steel, and the bracket is made of aluminum alloy. The bottom of the bracket is wide, stable and solid, exquisite. Due to the heat of alcohol, the engine will run wildly and generate electricity. The power supply will pass through the wire and drive the LED light. Sturdy and durable metal components ensure long operation, enjoy physical powertrain mechanism display.
- Easy to Operate: Fill the alcohol burner with your 95% medical-alcohol (we recommend this fuel) and light it. Let the light burn the cylinder with the rounded ends for about 60 seconds, then gently push the wheel.
- Superior performance: The Stirling engine is equipped with an LED. As power will pass through the wire and turn on the LED light. When the model continues to rotate, the speed is high, the performance is stable, and the rotation can be maintained for a long time.
- Great Educational Tool: This is an amazing and wonderful Stirling Engine, which has a wide range of applications, such as science project, physics / mechanical learning, teacher presentation props in class, friends, family, parents birthday gifts, etc.
- Through July 2012: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported 144 approved uprates since requests began in 1977, adding more than 6,500 megawatts-electric (MWe).
- As of January 2022: The NRC backgrounder reported 171 approved uprates, with cumulative gains of approximately 24,089 megawatts-thermal (MWt) and 8,030 MWe. The NRC compared that electric capacity to about eight reactors; it is an agency comparison, not a literal one-for-one engineering equivalence.
- Over the 20 years covered by its current program page: The NRC says uprates added six gigawatts. This rolling-period figure is distinct from the NRC’s cumulative January 2022 total.
Separately, on March 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced UPRISE, an initiative that includes expanding output through uprates, restarting dormant facilities, and completing stalled projects. Those are program goals and work areas, not a claim that all the planned capacity is already operating.
Why not simply improve how often a plant runs?
Generating more over a year and raising the licensed maximum are different approaches. Availability improvements can help a plant produce more of its permitted output over time. A power uprate instead changes the permitted ceiling itself. The EIA says U.S. nuclear plants usually operate at or near their generating capacity throughout the year; that general observation does not establish that every unit has exhausted every possible availability improvement.

What to compare when evaluating an uprate proposal
For two actual projects, headline percentages alone are not enough. Useful comparison points include:
- The uprate category and proposed percentage.
- The increase in reactor thermal power versus the increase in net electric output.
- The plant-specific design margins and equipment that must be modified or replaced.
- The project’s outage schedule and cost, when reliable project-specific data are available.
- The proposal’s licensing status and safety-review requirements.
Cost and schedule cannot be inferred from the category or percentage alone; they depend on the individual project.
