Windows 11 doesn’t let you pick Yahoo Mail as a standalone “default program” the way you’d set an app for a button in an installer. Instead, you set the default email app for the mail protocol (and then make sure that app is using your Yahoo account).
In 2024, the most reliable path is: add your Yahoo account to the Windows 11 Mail app (using Yahoo IMAP/SMTP) and then set Mail as the default email client. When you click mailto: links, Windows will open Mail, and Mail will compose using your Yahoo account.

What Windows 11 Means by Default Email
On Windows 11, the “default email” setting controls which app opens when you activate an email link (a mailto: link), or when Windows asks for an email handler. It’s not the same as setting a web browser to load a specific website every time.

So when you say “make Yahoo my default email,” you’re really trying to ensure Windows opens an email composer that uses your Yahoo Mail account.
What You Can (and Can’t) Set to Yahoo
- Yes: Set Microsoft Mail as the default email app, then add your Yahoo account to that Mail app.
- Yes: Use Windows Mail to send and receive Yahoo messages via IMAP/SMTP.
- Sometimes: Set a browser as the default handler for
mailto:links so mail opens in the browser. - No (reliably): There isn’t a universal Windows setting that forces Yahoo Mail web compose for every
mailto:click regardless of browser/account context.
Prerequisites for Yahoo Mail in Windows 11
- Windows 11 (works on 22H2/23H2/24H2; menus may vary slightly).
- Your Yahoo Mail address and password.
- 2-step verification enabled on Yahoo, if Windows requires an app password.
- Correct IMAP/SMTP credentials (covered below).
If you hit authentication issues (the most common problem), you’ll need an app password rather than your normal Yahoo password.
Method 1: Use Windows 11 Mail as the Default Email App (Recommended)
This method gives you the cleanest “default email” behavior inside Windows, while still making your email account Yahoo.

Step 1 — Add your Yahoo account to the Mail app
- Open Start and search for Mail. Open the app called Mail (Microsoft).
- Look for Settings (gear icon).
- Select Manage accounts.
- Choose Add account.
- In the account picker, select Yahoo. If Yahoo isn’t shown, choose Other account or Advanced setup and use IMAP.
- Sign in with your Yahoo credentials.
When prompted for security, complete the Yahoo verification. If you’re asked for an app password, create one (see the troubleshooting section).

Step 2 — Set Microsoft Mail as the default email app
- Open Settings (Win + I).
- Go to Apps → Default apps.
- Find the setting labeled Email.
- Click it, then select Mail (Microsoft Mail).
After this, Windows will route email links to the Mail app.
Step 3 — Verify you’re composing from the Yahoo account
- In Mail, click New email.
- Look for the sender/account dropdown (or the “From” field) near the compose window.
- Choose your Yahoo account if multiple accounts exist.
If you only have one email account configured, it should default automatically. If you have multiple accounts (work + Yahoo), you’ll need to pick Yahoo for compose.
Method 2: Set a Browser as the Default for mailto Links (Web Compose)
This method can be useful if you only want web compose in Yahoo Mail and you don’t care about using the Mail app for receiving. The limitation: Windows can’t inherently “know” Yahoo should handle mailto: inside every browser context without additional setup.
Step 1 — Set the default email app to your browser
- Open Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- Go to Email.
- Select Microsoft Edge (or Google Chrome if that’s your preference).
Now, clicking an email link will open your browser and attempt to start a mail composition flow there.

Step 2 — Make sure mailto links open Yahoo compose
After switching the default to Edge/Chrome, test with a known mailto: link (for example, an email address in a website or document). If it doesn’t open Yahoo compose:
- Ensure you’re logged into Yahoo Mail in that browser session.
- Check whether the site generating the link includes a direct Yahoo compose URL (some apps do; many don’t).
- If your workflow requires consistent Yahoo compose, use Method 1 instead. It’s the most predictable across Windows apps.
IMAP/SMTP Settings for Yahoo Mail (If Yahoo sign-in doesn’t appear)
If the Mail app can’t find Yahoo in the account picker or keeps failing authentication, switch to manual IMAP/SMTP setup.

For the username, use your full Yahoo email address.
App password requirement (the common failure point)
Yahoo may require an app password for IMAP/SMTP clients. If you use your normal Yahoo password and authentication fails, create an app password and paste it into the Mail app where it asks for the password.

After setup completes, test sending a short email to yourself. That immediately confirms your SMTP settings are correct.
Troubleshooting When Yahoo Won’t Work as Default
If it’s not working after the setup steps, use these targeted checks. Most issues fall into three buckets: sign-in, SMTP, and default app routing.
Mail app won’t add the account
- Create an app password: Enable 2-step verification on Yahoo, then generate an app password for a mail client.
- Check system time: Windows time skew can break authentication. Set correct time in Settings → Time & language.
- Try manual setup: Use the IMAP/SMTP values listed above.
Messages send/fail with SMTP errors
- Confirm SMTP port: Try 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS) if your Mail app offers a choice.
- Re-enter the password: If you generated a new app password, remove the account and add it back with the updated credentials.
- Check “Require authentication”: Make sure SMTP authentication is enabled in the outgoing server settings.
mail links still open the wrong app
- Go back to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Email.
- Confirm it’s set to Mail (Method 1) or your browser (Method 2).
- Restart the app that launched the email link (for example, the browser or document viewer) and test again.
Some desktop apps cache their default handler. A restart clears the cache most of the time.

- Open New email and manually choose the Yahoo address in the sender dropdown.
- If there’s no dropdown, check whether your other account was added later and set preferences inside the Mail app for default sender.
Common Mistakes in 2024
- Confusing default email app with Yahoo web behavior: Setting a browser as default doesn’t guarantee Yahoo compose unless links are constructed for Yahoo specifically.
- Using the wrong password type: When Yahoo requests an app password, using your normal password will fail IMAP/SMTP authentication.
- Wrong encryption mode: IMAP should be 993 with SSL/TLS. SMTP commonly works on 465 with SSL/TLS.
- Not testing “New email”: Always send a test message from a fresh compose window to confirm the sender is Yahoo.

Method 2 (browser default for mailto) can work for some setups, but it’s less consistent. When reliability matters, Method 1 is the one to use.

Can I set Yahoo Mail as the default email app directly in Windows 11?
