Chrome’s page zoom enlarges the website, not the tabs or browser controls. To make tabs easier to see, increase your device’s display size or scaling; on a Chromebook, adjust Display size or resolution. If you need more room to read tab names rather than larger tabs, switch to vertical tabs.
Choose the setting that changes what you need
| What you want to change | Use this setting | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Tabs and other Chrome or screen elements on Windows | Windows display scale | Overall app and display sizing; the exact effect on Chrome’s tab strip depends on the computer and display configuration. |
| Text across Windows | Windows Text size | Text size, rather than webpage zoom. |
| Tabs and screen elements on a Chromebook | Display size or resolution | Screen elements, including the app shelf and tabs. |
| Website content | Chrome page zoom | Text, images, and video on webpages, not the tab strip. |
| More room to read tab titles | Vertical tabs | Moves tabs to a resizable side strip; it does not make horizontal tabs taller. |
Make Chrome tabs bigger on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Windows display scaling is the main system setting to try when Chrome tabs and controls are too small. Microsoft says its recommended scale is typically the best choice. Start there, then try a larger option if needed. The precise change to Chrome’s tab strip can vary with the computer and display configuration. See Microsoft’s display and accessibility settings guidance.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Under Scale & layout, open Scale and choose the recommended setting or a larger option.
- Check Chrome. If the tabs are still too small, return to the Scale setting and try a larger option.
Increase text size instead
If the main issue is legibility of text, use Windows’ separate text-size control: open Settings > Accessibility > Text size, move the slider, and select Apply. Some apps may need you to sign out and back in before the change takes effect. This changes system text size; it is not Chrome’s webpage zoom.

Use page zoom only when the website is too small
Chrome’s zoom setting enlarges webpage text, images, and video. Google Chrome Help explains that you can change these sizes for one webpage or for all webpages; page zoom does not enlarge the browser’s tabs.

Show tab titles with vertical tabs
If the problem is that tab names are hard to read or cut off, vertical tabs provide a wider side strip for titles. In Chrome desktop, right-click a blank area of the tab strip and choose Show Tabs Vertically, or open Settings > Appearance > Tab position. You can resize the vertical strip to give titles more room. This changes the tab layout; it does not increase the height of horizontal tabs.
