Measure your PC’s electricity use at the wall with a plug-in meter that reports true watts. Compare its settled idle reading with readings during ordinary work and a repeatable demanding task. There is no single wattage that means every PC is using too much: the answer depends on the computer, what it is doing, how long it runs, and whether you are measuring the PC alone or the whole desk.
How to measure your PC’s power use
- Use a plug-in meter that reports true watts. Choose one rated for your local outlet and the expected electrical load. ENERGY STAR’s archived Version 4.0 computer test procedure describes measuring the computer’s AC input with an approved true-power meter; it is useful for the measurement method, not as current certification criteria. Read the ENERGY STAR Version 4.0 computer test procedure.
- Measure the computer by itself first. Plug the PC into the meter, and avoid including other devices if you want a PC-only reading. To assess the whole workstation, measure the monitor and other peripherals separately, then account for their readings as well.
- Wait for startup activity to finish. After booting, allow the operating system to load and temporary background processes to settle before recording idle. Updates, indexing, launching a game, and other activity can change the result.
- Record comparable operating modes. Note the reading at settled idle, during normal work, and while running a repeatable demanding task that reflects how you use the PC. Keep the workload and measurement conditions consistent when comparing readings.
- Look at energy over time if you are estimating a bill. A peak-watt reading is not an annual cost estimate. Measure energy use over a representative period in kilowatt-hours (kWh), then apply your electricity tariff.
What counts as “too much”?
Judge the reading against what you expected for your own PC and use—not a universal cutoff. A reading only makes sense alongside its operating mode, workload, measurement scope, and duration. ENERGY STAR’s computer criteria distinguish Off, Sleep, and Idle, while its monitor guidance accounts for On and Sleep use and says allowances vary with screen area and resolution. Those program criteria are not a consumer threshold for diagnosing every computer.

A power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity; it does not tell you how much power the PC is drawing from the wall. Likewise, a single demanding-task reading does not show how much energy the computer uses over a day or year.

Background activity is still running
Updates, indexing, and other processes can prevent a PC from settling into a low-power state. Let temporary work finish, then take another idle reading under similar conditions.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Sleep settings are disabled or blocked
Check that the computer’s sleep settings are enabled and that software is not keeping it awake. ENERGY STAR warns that a screen saver does not save energy and some types can keep the CPU from shutting down. It also notes that games left running in the background can prevent sleep even when paused. Close or configure those programs, then compare the idle and sleep behavior again. See ENERGY STAR’s computer power-management guidance.
The display or another device is part of the reading
If the meter includes a monitor or peripherals, the result represents more than the PC alone. ENERGY STAR’s monitor guidance considers both On and Sleep power; its allowances vary with screen area and resolution. Read ENERGY STAR’s monitor guidance.

All the buttons will quit working and can only work again when the overload alarm has been cleared by raising the setting value or removing the appliance. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "MODE" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- KWH Alarm: Our power monitor plug has a upgraded power consumption alarm function. You can set the alarm power consumption for the appliances you monitored. Once the accumulated power consumption reaches the set alarm power consumption, the word "kwh alarm" will be displayed and keep flashing, the LCD will also keep flashing, and the buzzer will keep making a bi sound all the time to warn the users
- Data Memory Function: The watt meter plug in will record your power consumption data when you remove energy meter from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. All setting data and cumulative data(electricity quantity, cost, unit price, time) will be saved. You can directly see the last data when you use the electric usage meter plug next time(NOT including current, voltage, power, power factors). This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
How to use ENERGY STAR figures without overreading them
ENERGY STAR says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models, attributing the difference to efficient components and better management of idle energy. The computer criteria are effective October 27, 2025. This is a program-level comparison, not a prediction of how much an individual owner will save.

That is the program’s stated estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual PC or a test for whether its power draw is excessive. Its monitor guidance says certified monitors are 7% more energy efficient on average than standard options; that comparison does not measure your particular display.

If you are considering a replacement, use ENERGY STAR’s certified-computer criteria or product finder as a screening aid, and account for the PC’s form factor and workload. Criteria include power management—for example, under the program requirements the display should sleep within 15 minutes of inactivity and the system within 30 minutes. These are program requirements, not a guarantee that every machine’s settings or real-world behavior will match them. Check ENERGY STAR computer criteria and product information.
