How Do I Know How Many Pins My RAM Has (Pin Count by DDR Generation)

RAM pin count depends on the DDR generation and whether the module is a desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM. Here is the full table and how to identify your module.

There is no single pin count for RAM. The number depends on two things: the DDR generation (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5) and the form factor, which is either a full-size DIMM for most desktops or a compact SO-DIMM for most laptops. Find both, then match them to the table below. A pin count on its own does not identify the memory type, because some generations share a count across different form factors.

The pin counts by DDR generation

The table lists the contact count for each form factor. The figures come from Crucial’s published memory specifications. The page I reviewed does not show a publication date, so treat them as current product-standard values rather than figures tied to a specific year.

DDR generation DIMM pins (desktop, full-size) SO-DIMM pins (laptop, compact)
DDR 184 200
DDR2 240 200
DDR3 240 204
DDR4 288 260
DDR5 288 262

Two details matter when you read the table. First, DDR2 and DDR3 DIMMs both have 240 pins, so the count alone cannot separate them. Second, DDR4 and DDR5 DIMMs both have 288 pins, and their SO-DIMMs differ by only two contacts (260 and 262). Counting the pins on a module is therefore only useful once you know the form factor.

How to identify your module

  1. Read the label first. Power the computer down, unplug it, and look at the sticker or printed text on the module. Note the manufacturer and the full part number. Many part numbers encode the generation and module type directly.
  2. Look up the part number in the manufacturer’s specifications. Kingston, for example, publishes a decoder that maps fields in its part numbers to the technology and module type. Its DDR5 examples distinguish UDIMM (desktop) from SODIMM (laptop). The decoder only works for Kingston part numbers, so do not apply its codes to another brand.
  3. Identify the form factor physically. Desktop modules are usually full-length DIMMs. Laptop modules are shorter SO-DIMMs. Check the host system’s specification to confirm which form factor it uses.
  4. Match both values to the table. Find the row for the generation and the column for the form factor. The notch position can help you tell modules apart, but a notch that looks similar is not proof of compatibility, because generations are keyed differently and a module can look close to another while being the wrong type.

Why pin count is not a full compatibility check

Knowing the pin count tells you what the module is physically. It does not tell you whether a given computer will accept it. Several other factors decide that:

#1 Best Overall
Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
  • Generation support. The motherboard or laptop must support the exact DDR generation. A DDR4 module will not work in a DDR5 board, even if the sizes look right.
  • Form factor support. A desktop DIMM will not fit a laptop SO-DIMM slot, and the reverse is also true.
  • Capacity and speed limits. The system’s documentation sets the maximum capacity per slot and the supported speeds. Pin count says nothing about either.
  • Manufacturer-specific constraints. Some systems have limits on mixing modules or on which slots can be populated.

Checking compatibility before you buy

If you are replacing or adding memory, use the following order so you do not buy a module that cannot be installed.

  1. Confirm the DDR generation and form factor from the existing module or the system’s specification.
  2. Check the computer’s or motherboard’s memory specification for the supported generation, form factor, maximum capacity, and speed.
  3. If the manufacturer offers a compatibility tool, use it with your exact model. Kingston’s support pages direct users to its configurator and recommend confirming compatibility before purchase.
  4. Match the new module to the same generation and form factor as the slot, then buy.

Safety before you remove a module

If you need to see the label, you will likely have to open the case or laptop access panel. Kingston’s installation guidance says to shut down the computer and unplug it before removing modules, and that advice applies to desktops and laptops alike. Remove the power source before touching memory, and avoid handling the gold contacts.

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Because the pin count is a physical specification, you can identify your module without installing anything. Read the label, confirm the form factor, and match the result against the table above.
