How Do I Get Shortcuts On My Google Homepage?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People ask for shortcuts on the Google homepage, but Google doesn’t actually ship a “shortcut tiles” feature on google.com itself. What you can add depends on what you mean by “Google homepage”: the google.com start page, the browser New Tab page, or the Google Apps grid.

This guide covers the practical options—starting with Chrome’s New Tab shortcuts (the closest match to what most people want), then Google Apps, then custom New Tab approaches if you want true pinning behavior.

What you see Where it usually lives Can you add shortcut tiles?
Google logo + search box + links like Gmail Google.com homepage No (not like pinned tiles). The page is mostly fixed.
“Shortcuts” grid with pinned/recent sites Chrome New Tab page Yes, via Chrome’s built-in settings and behavior.
App grid (Google apps like Drive, YouTube, Maps) Google account “apps” launcher Yes, via Google Apps configuration (what appears in the grid depends on your account).

If your goal is a grid of tiles you can click, you almost certainly want Chrome New Tab, not google.com.

Method 1 (Most common): Show shortcuts on Chrome New Tab

On Chrome, the “Shortcuts” tiles appear on the New Tab page. Chrome usually shows them automatically once you visit sites (and, depending on versions, can also allow pinning).

Windows, macOS, Linux (Google Chrome desktop)

Use these steps to ensure the New Tab page shows shortcuts and that Chrome isn’t overriding your start page behavior.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, open chrome://settings/appearance.
  3. Look for and enable the option that shows the New Tab “Shortcuts” behavior (wording varies by version). If you don’t see a dedicated toggle, go to the next steps.
  4. Open a New Tab: press Ctrl + T (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + T (macOS).
  5. On the New Tab page, find the Shortcuts section. If it’s missing, try loading a clean New Tab page directly by opening chrome://newtab/.
  6. If shortcuts still don’t appear, set Chrome’s New Tab and start behavior back to default:
    • Open chrome://settings/onStartup.
    • Choose Open the New Tab page.
  7. To populate shortcuts faster, visit 5–10 sites you want to see. Chrome typically fills shortcut tiles based on usage.

Pinning note: Some Chrome versions let you right-click a tile on New Tab and pin it. If you don’t see “Pin,” your build may only show frequently visited sites automatically.

Android (Chrome browser)

Android Chrome is less configurable than desktop, but you can still steer which page opens and what shows on New Tab.

  1. Open the Chrome app.
  2. Tap the three dots (menu) → Settings.
  3. Go to Home page (or On startup, depending on your Android/Chrome version).
  4. Select New tab page or the equivalent that routes you to the New Tab experience.
  5. Return to Chrome and open a new tab. Visit the sites you want; tiles usually appear after Chrome gathers browsing data.

iPhone and iPad (Chrome browser)

On iOS, Chrome is constrained by Apple’s browser architecture. You’ll usually get fewer “pin” controls, but New Tab shortcuts behavior still depends on your Chrome state.

  4. Open a new tab and visit the target sites so Chrome can generate tiles.
  5. If you still don’t see anything, update Chrome in the App Store and try again.

Method 2: Use Google Apps (the grid) instead of shortcut tiles

If you mean shortcuts to Google services (Drive, YouTube, Gmail), the most reliable “shortcut grid” is the Google Apps launcher.

Desktop browsers

  1. Go to google.com and sign in.
  2. Click the Google apps icon (the 3×3 grid) in the top-right.
  3. Choose an app from the grid.
  4. If you want different apps to show, use your Google account app launcher settings. In many cases, the grid reflects what you’ve enabled and used in your Google account.

Android and iOS

  1. Open the Google app or go to google.com in your browser.
  2. Sign in to your Google account.
  3. Tap the apps grid (often a 3×3 icon) and select your desired service.

This won’t give you a custom pin-to-tile system, but it does give a fast “shortcut” experience to Google properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: Pin sites with a Custom New Tab page

If your real goal is: “I want exactly these 6–12 sites as tiles on the page I open every day,” you’ll need a custom New Tab solution. Chrome supports extensions that replace the New Tab page, but you should pick carefully.

Desktop browsers

Try a New Tab replacement extension from the Chrome Web Store, then configure it to show a grid.

  1. Open Chrome and go to the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Search for custom new tab or new tab dashboard.
  3. Install a reputable extension (look for strong ratings and recent updates).
  4. After installation, open a New Tab and confirm the extension replaced the default page.
  5. In the extension’s settings, add your sites, using the extension’s “Add shortcut” / “Add tile” / “Dashboard” UI.
  6. Pin or reorder tiles if the extension supports it.

Security note: Extensions can read and modify page data depending on their permissions. Only install what you trust and avoid ones requesting unnecessary broad permissions.

Android and iOS constraints

On Android Chrome, extension support has historically been inconsistent for custom New Tab dashboards. On iOS, Chrome doesn’t support the same extension model as desktop, so you may not be able to replicate a desktop-style pinned grid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you’re on iOS and want pinned tiles, you’ll usually get the best results by using bookmarks, the Share/Shortcuts feature in iOS, or focusing on Google Apps launcher tiles instead.

Method 4: Use bookmarks and the browser home shortcuts features

If you don’t actually need the tiles on google.com, bookmarks are often the simplest way to create a “shortcut row” experience on whatever page you start with.

Chrome bookmarks shortcuts vs New Tab tiles

Chrome’s bookmark bar can act like a manual shortcut set, even when New Tab shortcuts are missing.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Go to Bookmarks → Show bookmarks bar.
  3. Bookmark the sites you use most: visit the page and select Bookmark (star icon).
  4. Organize into folders and keep the ones you need as top-level bookmarks so they appear quickly on the bar.

This isn’t a “Google homepage” feature, but it’s dependable across devices.

Firefox/Safari note (so you don’t waste time)

If you’re using Firefox or Safari and your goal is literally “Google homepage tiles,” you’ll usually be disappointed. Those browsers handle New Tab dashboards differently, and google.com won’t provide a configurable tile editor. Switch your strategy to either the browser’s New Tab/dashboard features or bookmarks.

Troubleshooting: shortcuts not showing

If you followed the steps and your shortcut tiles are still missing, the issue is usually one of: New Tab behavior is disabled, you’re on the wrong “home” page, your Chrome profile is in a weird state, or Chrome hasn’t collected enough browsing history.

Check the New Tab page mode and settings

  1. Open a fresh New Tab (not a bookmarked page): press Ctrl + T or Cmd + T.
  2. Verify it’s the default Chrome New Tab page (or whatever you expect if you installed a custom extension).
  3. If you changed “On startup” settings, confirm it’s set to open the New Tab page.

Update Chrome and reset New Tab behavior

  1. Update Chrome: open chrome://settings/help.
  2. Restart Chrome.
  3. If a New Tab extension is interfering, disable it temporarily:
    • Open chrome://extensions.
    • Toggle the extension off.
    • Open a new tab and check whether shortcuts return.

If you installed multiple custom New Tab extensions, remove the ones you don’t need. Conflicts are common.

Fix missing shortcut tiles after profile or sync changes

Shortcut tiles depend on browsing behavior and sometimes on profile sync. Try this sequence:

  1. Check you’re using the profile you expect (top-right profile icon).
  2. Sign out and back into Chrome sync (desktop), then wait a few minutes and open a new tab.
  3. If you have multiple profiles, confirm the one with your browsing history is the active one.
  4. As a diagnostic, create a temporary new Chrome profile and open New Tab—if shortcuts appear there, the issue is profile-specific.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting google.com to behave like a dashboard. The google.com homepage is mostly fixed; tiles usually belong on New Tab.
  • Changing the wrong setting. “Home page” and “New tab page” are different. On desktop, confirm both if you’re trying to control the first page you see.
  • Installing multiple New Tab replacements. Conflicts can remove shortcuts entirely.
  • Giving Chrome too little data. If you’ve only visited a couple sites, shortcuts may appear sparse for a while.

FAQ

Why do I see no Shortcuts section on my New Tab page?

You might be using a custom New Tab extension that doesn’t show tiles, or Chrome’s New Tab behavior is overridden. Try opening chrome://newtab/, and disable extensions temporarily to confirm.

Can I add my own sites directly to google.com?

No, google.com doesn’t offer a built-in “add shortcut tiles” editor like a dashboard. Use Chrome New Tab shortcuts, bookmarks, or a custom New Tab extension if you need fully controlled tiles.

Do shortcuts sync across devices?

Sometimes. Chrome’s shortcut tiles can be driven by local browsing history and may not match exactly across devices. If you use multiple profiles or sign-in/out changes, the tiles can shift.

Will disabling cookies or using strict privacy settings prevent shortcuts?

It can. If Chrome can’t store browsing information normally, the behavior that generates shortcut tiles may be reduced. Try the feature on a standard browsing profile.

Bottom Line

If you want a tile grid, the most reliable answer is: use Chrome New Tab shortcuts, not the google.com homepage. Set Chrome to open the New Tab page, visit the sites you want, and verify you’re not overriding New Tab with conflicting extensions.

If you need fully custom pins, the practical path is a custom New Tab dashboard on desktop or bookmarks/Google Apps on mobile. Once you choose which “homepage” you mean, the correct fix becomes straightforward.
