Sign in to the NOOK app, a registered NOOK device, or NOOK for Web with the Barnes & Noble account that bought the eBook. The title should already be in that account’s NOOK Library. Open it there to download it. If it isn’t listed, the usual causes are the wrong account or a library that hasn’t synced yet.
Steps to download a purchased eBook
- Choose where you want to read. Your options are a registered NOOK device, the NOOK app for iOS or Android, or NOOK for Web in a browser.
- Sign in with the purchasing account. A book bought under a different Barnes & Noble account won’t appear in the library of the account you’re signed in to.
- Open the NOOK Library. Barnes & Noble says eBooks bought on bn.com sync to the NOOK Library automatically.
- Tap or select the title to download or open it. The button wording differs by platform and app version. Barnes & Noble’s help pages describe the sync and download behavior but don’t give one interface path that applies everywhere.
The NOOK app is free from the iOS App Store or Google Play. It has no built-in shop. You buy on bn.com, and the purchase then syncs to your library.

Which reading route should you use?

If the book is missing or won’t download
- Check the account. Confirm you’re signed in with the same account used at checkout.
- Refresh the library. Barnes & Noble’s Android troubleshooting page says to pull down on the Library tab.
- Check payment settings (Android guidance). That same article suggests making sure the account’s payment method is current and that a default payment method is selected. It’s a platform-specific suggestion, not a universal cause.
- Re-download an archived title. If the book is archived in NOOK Cloud, tap its cover to download it again.
Downloading a book again
Barnes & Noble’s Help Center article “Downloading eBooks Multiple Times” (last updated January 14, 2026) says: “Once you’ve purchased an eBook, you can access and download it as many times as you want, as long as you have not deleted it from your NOOK Library.” You can have it on multiple devices. If you sign out, unregister a device, or archive a title, you’ll need to download it again.
Automatic downloads and mobile data
Barnes & Noble says content purchased from a NOOK device starts downloading automatically when the device has an active Wi-Fi connection. In the mobile app, you can allow automatic downloads over cellular under Account → Download & Storage. Leave that off if your data plan is limited.

Windows users
The NOOK for Windows app stopped being available for new downloads from the Microsoft Store on November 29, 2023. Barnes & Noble says previously purchased content remains available through NOOK for Web and its iOS and Android apps, so use one of those instead.
These instructions come from Barnes & Noble Help Center pages dated between 2022 and 2026. App menus and labels change, so follow what your current app shows if it differs.
