Disable DHCP only after confirming another DHCP server will serve the same subnet, or planning to configure affected devices manually. Then turn off the relevant router service, Windows Server scope, or Linux DHCP configuration and test a client. The exact steps depend on where DHCP is running; there is no universal menu path.
What happens when you disable DHCP?
DHCP automatically supplies clients with network settings such as an IP address, subnet information, a default gateway, and DNS servers. A DHCP scope defines an address range and related options for a particular subnet.
If you disable the only DHCP service for a network, clients may not receive settings automatically when they join or renew a connection. A replacement service must serve that same subnet and supply the settings clients need. Otherwise, configure affected devices with suitable manual IP settings.
Before turning it off
- Find the server that is answering clients. It could be a router, Windows Server, dnsmasq, or another network appliance.
- Confirm the affected subnet and replacement. Check that a replacement DHCP server is active and configured for that subnet, or plan manual configuration.
- Record required network options. Note the correct gateway and DNS servers. Microsoft identifies router/default gateway and DNS server as common DHCP scope options (Microsoft Learn: DHCP scopes in Windows Server).
- Prevent address conflicts. If using static addresses, keep them in the intended subnet and ensure a remaining DHCP scope will not lease those addresses. Microsoft recommends exclusions for manually assigned addresses in scope planning.
- Preserve management access. If your computer depends on the service you are changing, you could lose connectivity to the router or server interface. Follow the vendor’s instructions for manual settings or use a management connection that will remain available.
Disable DHCP on a home router
Router menus differ by model and firmware. First confirm the exact model and whether it is acting as the main router or as an access point; do not assume one router’s menu path applies to another.

For NETGEAR Nighthawk routers, follow NETGEAR’s instructions for disabling the DHCP server feature. NETGEAR notes that when DHCP is off and no other DHCP server is present, a computer may need a manually assigned IP address to access the router. Use the support page or manual for your particular router before changing the setting.
Disable a Windows Server scope or service
Windows Server uses DHCP scopes to define address ranges and configuration for clients on particular subnets. A scope can be controlled independently, so first decide whether the change should affect one subnet or every subnet served by the server.

- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- One subnet: identify and change the relevant scope rather than making a server-wide change. Microsoft’s setup guidance describes scope activation as the step that allows the DHCP Server to begin assigning addresses (Install and configure DHCP Server on Windows Server).
- All scopes: before stopping or disabling the server role or service, verify the impact on every subnet it serves and confirm replacement service coverage.
Exact disable steps depend on the installed Windows Server version and deployment; the Microsoft guidance linked above does not establish one universal disable sequence for every configuration. In an Active Directory domain, DHCP authorization is a separate safeguard: Microsoft says a server must be authorized to operate properly, and unauthorized servers do not lease addresses. Removing authorization is not the same operation as disabling an authorized server or scope.
Disable DHCP from dnsmasq without disrupting other services
dnsmasq can provide DHCP, DNS, and other network services. Determine whether the host also provides services you need to keep. If you want to retain DNS while stopping DHCP, change only the DHCP configuration. Configuration file locations and service commands vary by Linux distribution, so consult that distribution’s documentation rather than applying a generic command.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Test the change and troubleshoot problems
- Reconnect a client or renew its lease.
- Inspect its IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS server settings. Confirm that the intended DHCP server supplied them, or that the manual values are correct.
- Check that the client can reach the local router and resolve names.
If a client receives unexpected settings, check for another DHCP server on the network segment and for overlapping or incorrect scopes. Microsoft documents a specific case in which a server with a disabled scope may send a DHCPNAK when a client tries to renew a lease for that scope (Microsoft Learn: DHCP Server sends a DHCPNAK to clients). This behavior is documented for that scenario, not guaranteed for every disabled-scope setup.
If router access disappears, use the router’s recommended management method and address configuration. If the disabled server was the network’s only DHCP service, restore it or configure a replacement before expecting clients to obtain settings automatically again.

Choose the narrowest change that meets your goal
| Where DHCP runs | Typical change scope | Check before disabling |
|---|---|---|
| Home router | Router’s DHCP feature; menu varies by model and firmware | Whether another server covers the subnet, and whether the router is the main router or an access point |
| Windows Server | One subnet’s scope or the server service, depending on the goal | Which scopes and subnets are affected; whether another authorized server provides coverage |
| Linux with dnsmasq | DHCP configuration, if DNS or other dnsmasq services must remain | Which services the host provides and the distribution-specific configuration |
