How Do I Clear Cache and Cookies on Microsoft Edge?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cache and cookies are how Microsoft Edge speeds up page loads and keeps you signed in. When websites change—or when stored data gets corrupted—those same files can cause login loops, broken layouts, or stale content.

This guide walks you through clearing cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS/iPadOS. You’ll also find troubleshooting steps if problems persist after clearing data.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What cache and cookies do (and why clearing them helps)

Cache stores temporary files (like images, stylesheets, and scripts) so pages load faster. Cookies are small text files used for sessions, preferences, and tracking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clearing them can fix issues like:

  • Stuck sign-in / repeated password prompts
  • Pages showing outdated content
  • Broken buttons, layout glitches, or scripts not loading
  • Site-specific errors after a site update

It also may sign you out of sites and reset some preferences, so pick the right scope.

Before you start: choose what to clear

Edge offers different levels of cleanup. The most common choice is removing Browsing data for a time range, plus cache and cookies.

  • Cookies and site data: Sign-out risk is highest; this clears session cookies.
  • Cached images and files: Often enough for visual/script issues; may keep you signed in.
  • Time range: Use Last 24 hours or Last 7 days first if you only need recent fixes.

  3. Choose Settings.

Clear cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge on macOS

The macOS flow is nearly identical, with the same data categories.

  2. Click Edge in the top menu bar (or the three dots in the toolbar), then select Settings.
  3. Go to Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
  5. Pick a Time range.
  6. Enable:
    • Cookies and other site data
    • Cached images and files
  7. Click Clear now.

Clear cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge on Android

On Android, the controls are in the in-app browser settings. You can clear all site data or only cached files.

Clear cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge on iPhone or iPad

  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Go to Privacy or Privacy and security.

Clear cache and cookies for a single site (safer than wiping everything)

Wiping all cookies can be disruptive. If one site is misbehaving, clear data for that specific domain instead.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to the site that’s causing trouble.
  3. Click the lock icon (or site information icon) in the address bar.
  4. Select Site settings (sometimes shown as View site information first).
  5. Find the option related to Clear data or Cookies and site data.
  6. Choose Clear for that site’s stored data.

After that, reload the page and sign in again only for the affected site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear cached images/files without signing out everywhere

If the problem is mostly visual (images not updating, old styling, broken scripts), clearing cached images and files is often enough.

If the issue is a login/session loop, then you’ll need Cookies and other site data too.

When clearing cache and cookies doesn’t fix the problem

Sometimes the issue isn’t stored data—it’s extensions, permissions, or network-level caching. Try these in order.

1) Disable extensions temporarily

Extensions can interfere with authentication, ad scripts, or site DOM updates.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Extensions.
  2. Turn off extensions one by one (or use the toggle for all if Edge offers it).
  3. Reload the site and test.

2) Refresh permissions for the affected site

If a site’s storage permissions are blocked, clearing cookies won’t fully restore behavior.

  1. Open the site.
  2. Click the lock icon in the address bar.
  3. Open Site settings.
  4. Verify settings like Cookies, JavaScript, and Pop-ups and redirects are allowed.

3) Use a new InPrivate window

This bypasses existing cookies and most stateful browsing data, so you can confirm whether it’s stored data-related.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows/Linux) or use the New InPrivate window option.
  2. Visit the problematic site and test login/content.

If the site works in InPrivate, the root cause is usually cookies, cached resources, or an extension.

4) Update Microsoft Edge

An outdated Edge version can break compatibility with modern sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Click Settings and more (three dots).
  2. Go to Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
  3. Allow updates to download and restart Edge when prompted.

5) Reset Edge settings (last resort)

Resetting can fix persistent issues by restoring defaults for startup pages, search, and permissions.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Reset settings (often under Settings search).
  3. Select Restore settings to their default values.
  4. Confirm and restart Edge.

Resetting won’t necessarily remove everything you want, so clear cache/cookies first if you can.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Clearing cache only when the issue is authentication. If you’re stuck in sign-in loops, clear cookies too.
  • Clearing for the wrong time range. If the problem started weeks ago, choose All time or a wider window.
  • Forgetting multiple profiles. Edge can run different profiles. Make sure you’re clearing data for the active profile.
  • Clearing on one device but not another. If you use Edge on phone and desktop, each device stores its own data.
  • Expecting synced sign-in to survive. Clearing cookies can sign you out even if Edge is signed into your Microsoft account.

Quick comparisons: Edge vs other browsers (what to expect)

Browser Cache/cookie clearing behavior What usually changes
Microsoft Edge Chromium-style data categories: cached files + cookies/site data Often signs out of sites; cached assets reload on next visit
Chrome (Chromium) Very similar categories and time-range options Similar sign-out and refresh behavior
Firefox Different terminology, but same underlying storage concepts May also clear offline site data or DOM storage depending on options

If you’ve cleared cache/cookies before, Edge’s workflow should feel familiar. The key is choosing the right category and time range.

FAQs

Will clearing cookies in Edge sign me out?

Yes, for many sites. Cookies store session data, so clearing Cookies and other site data typically signs you out and may remove saved preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I clear cache or cookies first?

Start with Cached images and files. If the problem involves logins, consent, or session state, clear both cache and Cookies and other site data.

How often should I clear cache and cookies?

There’s no fixed schedule. Clear them when something breaks—like after a site redesign, frequent login failures, or persistent display issues.

Does clearing cookies remove downloads or browser history?

No. Clearing browsing data as described here targets cache and cookies. Your downloaded files and browsing history are separate from these specific options.

Why does the problem keep coming back?

If the issue returns immediately after you clear data, look at extensions, site permissions, or whether the site is loading a stale resource from a server-side problem. Testing in an InPrivate window helps confirm whether stored data is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final Thoughts

Clearing cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge is one of the fastest ways to fix broken pages, stale content, and sign-in problems. Choose Cached images and files for display/script issues, and add Cookies and other site data when authentication or session state is involved.

If clearing data doesn’t help, move to the next likely cause—extensions, permissions, and then Edge settings reset—until the behavior stops repeating.
