How Do Golf World Rankings Work, and How Do Majors Affect Them?

The men’s OWGR is a rolling 104-week average, with points fading over time. Major winners receive 100 first-place points, but major entry cutoffs are set separately by each organizer.

The men’s Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is a rolling average, not a career-points leaderboard. It weighs eligible tournament results over 104 weeks, with newer points worth more; a major winner receives 100 first-place points, compared with 80 for The Players Championship and the maximum for other events.

How the men’s OWGR is calculated

OWGR ranks players by average ranking points earned in eligible tournaments during a rolling 104-week period. It does not simply add up a player’s career points. The official OWGR explanation of the ranking sets the calculation and ageing rules.

  • Results stay in the record for 104 weeks. The ranking period ends on the date 104 weeks before the ranking date.
  • Recent results carry more weight. Points retain their original value for 13 weeks. After that, they decline by 1/92 of their original value each week for the remaining 91 weeks of the period.
  • The average uses a controlled divisor. Total points are divided by the number of eligible tournaments played, with a minimum divisor of 40 and a maximum of the player’s most recent 52 eligible tournaments.

The minimum divisor matters: playing fewer than 40 eligible events does not mean a player’s total is divided by that smaller number. Conversely, results beyond the 52-event maximum do not all enter the average. A player’s position can also change in a week when they do not compete, as older results age or leave their record and other players’ averages change. OWGR explains that effect in its FAQ.

How a tournament earns ranking points

Points available at an event depend on both the field and the player’s finish. OWGR calculates a field rating from the performance points of participants. Those performance points draw on Strokes Gained World Ratings, which use eligible stroke-play rounds adjusted for relative round difficulty. The field rating then informs the points distributed by finishing position.

Finishing position, the event’s points-distribution curve and format also affect what a player earns. Points generally go to players who complete an eligible tournament—or make the primary cut when an event has more than one cut—and are available as far down as 125th place, subject to the applicable distribution and adjustments. The OWGR explanation of ranking points describes the method.

Why major results have extra weight

The four men’s majors—the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship and Open Championship—are each assigned 100 first-place points for the winner. The Players Championship is separately rated at 80 first-place points, while other eligible tournaments are capped at 80. In other words, a major winner’s first-place allocation is 25% higher than the 80-point ceiling.

A major finish affects the ranking through the same rolling-average system as any other eligible result, but the event’s separate allocation makes the winner’s result especially valuable. Other finishers can earn points too, according to the event’s distribution. The result then fades under the weekly ageing schedule. A major win does not guarantee a particular ranking: the change depends on points earned, the player’s divisor and other counted results, as well as what is ageing or dropping out of the record.

Ranking points and major entry are related, but separate

OWGR points measure performance under OWGR rules; major organizers set their own invitations and exemptions. A high ranking can provide an entry route, but each championship can use a different cutoff and ranking date alongside other exemptions. These examples are for the named editions and should not be assumed to carry over to another year:

Championship criteria OWGR route described Source
2026 Masters Top 50 on the final OWGR for the previous calendar year, or top 50 on the ranking published during the week before the tournament. The criteria also include other exemptions. Masters invitee criteria
2026 Open Championship First 50 players on OWGR for Week 21, 2026. The 2027 qualification page also specifies a Week 21 top-50 route for that edition. The Open qualification criteria
2026 U.S. Open Top 60 points leaders and ties in the current OWGR as of June 15, 2026, if not previously exempt. U.S. Open exemptions

That creates a possible two-step effect: a strong major finish can add OWGR points, and a higher position may help a player cross a later entry cutoff. Whether it does depends on that championship’s own criteria and timing.

2026 rule updates that affect point distributions

LIV Golf individual events

OWGR announced on February 3, 2026 that LIV Golf individual stroke-play events would receive ranking points for the 2026 season. Only the top 10 finishers and ties receive points; players below 10th do not, and unallocated points are not redistributed. OWGR described this as a tailored decision addressing areas where LIV did not meet its eligibility standards. It is a 2026 arrangement, not a basis for assuming the same policy applies in later seasons. See the OWGR announcement.

OWGR chairman Trevor Immelman said in that announcement: “This has been an incredibly complex and challenging process and one which we have devoted a huge amount of time and energy to resolving in the seven months since LIV Golf submitted their application.”

Events scheduled for fewer rounds

A separate OWGR update, announced December 30, 2025 and effective from Ranking Week 1 of 2026, adjusts points for shorter events:

  • Scheduled 54-hole events receive 75% of the originally calculated field rating and ranking-points distribution.
  • A 72-hole event curtailed to 54 holes receives 75%.
  • A 72-hole or 54-hole event curtailed to 36 holes receives 50%.

These are adjustments to the field rating and distribution, not additional points. The OWGR announcement sets out the short-event update.

What to keep in mind when comparing players or events

  • A ranking is an average over a rolling window, not a tally of every point a player has ever earned.
  • Points fade after 13 weeks, so a result’s influence changes over time.
  • Field rating, finishing position and event format shape tournament points; the major premium applies to the winner allocation, not as a blanket guarantee of a fixed ranking jump.
  • Major entry rules belong to each organizer and edition. Check the relevant year’s criteria and cutoff date rather than assuming one universal top-50 rule.
  • Policies such as the 2026 LIV allocation and short-event adjustments are time-specific; consult current OWGR rules for later seasons.
