How Do Foldable Phone Displays and Hinges Work?

Foldable phones use a layered flexible display and a controlled hinge. Here is how the stack bends, why creases appear, what durability ratings mean and how to protect the inner screen.

Foldable phones combine a flexible, layered display with a hinge that controls how two phone halves move. The screen bends as an assembly, while the hinge guides the path, protects the folded surfaces and, on some models, holds the phone at partly open angles. Materials, layer order, hinge geometry, crease behavior and durability limits vary by model.

The basic idea: a flexible screen guided by a hinge

A conventional phone has a rigid display mounted to a rigid body. A foldable phone divides that body into two sections and joins them with a hinge. Its inner screen is built to flex repeatedly, and the hinge keeps the two sections moving along a controlled path instead of allowing an uncontrolled twist.

During closing, the display stack changes shape as both halves rotate toward each other. During opening, the hinge reverses that motion and brings the two sections into a flat or nearly flat position. The display and hinge therefore work as one mechanical system: the panel must tolerate bending, and the hinge must guide that bending without forcing the screen into a sharper curve than the design allows.

There is no single foldable-phone construction. Manufacturers use different flexible panels, protective layers, films, hinge layouts and sealing strategies. A specification for one model should not be treated as a universal description of every foldable.

What a foldable display is made of

A foldable display is a stack of bonded layers, not one sheet of bendable glass. Samsung’s support description, updated August 9, 2022, identifies four parts in its foldable display stack: AMOLED, Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), a protective layer and an outer protective film. That is Samsung’s documented arrangement for the products covered by that guidance, not a guaranteed stack for every brand or generation.

Layer or element Function in Samsung’s description What to understand
AMOLED Self-emissive display panel Creates the image and light; the panel is engineered to flex with the rest of the assembly.
Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) Thin glass surface over the display Provides a glass-like surface while remaining thin enough for the folding design.
Protective layer Helps resist outside forces and relieve impact Adds protection between the display elements and the user’s contact with the surface.
Outer protective film Supports and protects the display surface; replaceable in Samsung’s description It is a serviceable protective component, not the display panel itself.

Google’s explainer for the original Pixel Fold describes the same broad engineering approach: flexible displays use layered materials such as ultra-thin glass and plastics so the assembly can flex through repeated opening and closing. That explainer does not publish a complete layer-by-layer specification or a universal method for distributing bending strain. The exact materials and order can therefore differ between devices.

Why both glass and plastic can appear in the same screen

Ultra-thin glass can provide a smoother, harder surface than a plastic-only cover, but making glass thin enough to fold changes how it must be supported and protected. Plastics and polymer films can flex more readily and can serve as backing or protective layers. The result is a compromise among surface feel, scratch resistance, flexibility, impact tolerance, thickness and repairability.

The user touches the top protective surface, not the light-emitting AMOLED layer directly. A mark or crack in a protector may be serviceable, while damage that reaches the panel beneath can produce lines, spots or an unusable area. Do not assume that replacing an outer film repairs damage to the display itself.

Why a crease can be visible

The fold line is a normal consequence of repeatedly bending a layered panel. A flexible display has to transition between its open and folded shapes, and the hinge determines the path that transition takes. Fine bends may be visible from some viewing angles. Lighting, viewing angle, the phone’s open position and the particular panel construction all affect how noticeable the crease appears.

A crease is not proof that the display is failing. However, a new crack, spreading line, dark spot, touch problem or rapidly changing shape is a reason to stop pressing the area and seek the manufacturer’s support process.

In a July 14, 2026 announcement, Samsung said its next-generation Flex Titanium display structure integrates a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate to balance slimness, flexibility and strength, and is intended to reduce crease visibility. Those are Samsung’s claims about that next-generation structure. They do not establish that creases disappear or that the same construction is used in all foldable phones; the titanium components described there are part of the display structure, not a universal hinge material.

What the hinge does

The hinge is the mechanical spine connecting the two phone halves. Its primary job is to guide rotation so the flexible screen bends along the intended path. It also influences how far the phone opens, how it sits when closed and whether it can remain at an intermediate angle.

  • Connectivity Technology: NFC
  • Operating System: Android 13.0
  • Memory Storage Capacity: 512.0 GB
  • Camera Description: Rear
  • Battery Charge Time: 79.0 minutes

Samsung describes its hinge as a bespoke spine that leaves a small gap when the phone is closed, preventing the inner glass surfaces from touching directly. The same design can support partially open positions. Google likewise describes the Pixel Fold as using a special hinge paired with its flexible display, but the available explainer does not document the internal linkage in engineering detail.

Internal gears, cams, springs, brushes, linkages and sealing arrangements are not universal features that can be safely assigned to every foldable. Unless a manufacturer publishes those details for a specific model, the useful generalization is simply that the hinge controls motion and manages the folded clearance.

What happens as you fold the phone

  1. Starting open: The two body sections are aligned, and the display is in its broadest, flattest configuration.
  2. Beginning closure: Force applied to one half rotates it around the hinge. The hinge constrains the direction and speed of that rotation.
  3. Panel transition: The flexible display stack changes curvature as the halves move. The glass, polymer and protective layers flex together rather than acting as separate loose sheets.
  4. Approaching closed: The hinge geometry maintains clearance so the inner surfaces do not collide. On designs with a closing gap, the two halves meet around the outer body rather than crushing the display at the fold.
  5. Partly open: Friction or other hinge-control elements can hold an intermediate angle on supported models, enabling hands-free viewing, video calls or photos.
  6. Opening again: The hinge guides the reverse path and returns the display toward its open position.

The exact motion profile, opening angle and resistance vary by model. A phone that stays upright at one angle does not imply that every foldable has the same capability.

Durability claims: read the model and test conditions

Fold-cycle numbers are laboratory or certification claims tied to a particular device. Samsung’s UK guide for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 states that those models are certified for up to 200,000 folds. “Up to 200,000 folds” is a Samsung, model-specific claim from 2026; it is not an independently established lifespan guarantee for every foldable phone, nor does it predict how a phone will behave after drops, contamination, misuse or wear.

Fold testing also cannot represent every real-world variable. A test rig may apply a repeatable motion under controlled conditions, while a user may close the phone with grit inside, twist one half, press the crease or drop the device. Those events can damage a panel or hinge long before a nominal cycle count is reached.

Understanding an IP rating

The same Samsung UK guide explains IP48 conditions for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7: protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and freshwater submersion up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes under the specified test conditions. Samsung warns that water resistance may diminish with wear and that these devices are not dust- or sand-resistant.

An IP label is not a promise that fine dust, beach sand, impact damage or an aging hinge is harmless. It also does not make a phone safe to clean with any liquid. Treat the rating as a bounded test result for the named models, not as an all-purpose durability guarantee.

How the softer inner screen changes everyday care

Flexible inner displays are more vulnerable to point pressure and contamination than the rigid glass on many conventional phones. Samsung advises against dropping the device, pressing the fold area, closing it with cards or keys inside, or allowing sand or metal powder into the gap. It also warns against pressing the screen with a pen, fingernail or key; impact or concentrated pressure can produce spots, lines, cracks or other visible damage.

  • Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
  • The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
  • The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]

Google’s Pixel Fold safety guide gives model-specific guidance because that phone’s flexible screen is softer than a traditional phone screen. It says to keep crumbs, fingernails, sharp objects, sand and dirt away from the display and hinge. For Pixel Fold specifically, Google says not to remove or peel back the pre-installed screen protector and not to apply a third-party protector. That instruction should not be generalized to every foldable: follow the protector policy for the exact model you own.

A practical care checklist

  • Inspect the inner screen and hinge area before closing the phone.
  • Remove grit, crumbs, cards, keys and other objects from between the halves.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth for dust and smudges when the manufacturer permits it; Google gives that method for Pixel Fold.
  • Keep fingernails, pens, styluses not approved for the model and metal objects away from the inner panel.
  • Do not force the phone past its designed opening range or twist one half independently.
  • Do not peel, lift or replace a factory-installed inner protector unless the maker’s service instructions specifically allow it.
  • Follow the model’s instructions for liquids and cleaning agents rather than assuming an IP rating permits them.

How to compare foldable designs intelligently

When evaluating actual phones, compare the construction and limits of each model instead of ranking devices by one headline number.

Comparison point Questions to ask Why it matters
Display stack Does the maker identify UTG, polymer layers, an outer film and replacement policy? These layers affect surface feel, scratch resistance, flexibility and repair options.
Hinge range Does it open flat, hold intermediate angles or leave a closing gap? Motion range changes how you use the phone for viewing, typing and photography.
Crease treatment Is reduced crease visibility a measured result or a company design claim? Crease visibility varies with angle and lighting; marketing language is not a universal guarantee.
Fold-cycle figure Which model was tested, by whom, under what conditions and on what date? A cycle count is not a cross-brand lifespan standard.
Water and dust resistance What is the exact IP rating, and does the maker exclude fine dust or warn that resistance declines with wear? The number describes a bounded test, not every environmental risk.
Protector policy Can the inner film be replaced by the owner, and are third-party protectors prohibited? An unauthorized film can interfere with the designed stack or void support terms.

Common misconceptions and failure modes

“The inner screen is just normal glass that folds.”

It is a layered flexible assembly. Even when ultra-thin glass is present, the panel also depends on supporting and protective materials, and the exact stack is model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A 200,000-fold rating means the phone will last 200,000 user folds.”

The figure applies to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 certification claim. It does not cover every phone or every condition a user can create.

“IP48 means the phone is dustproof.”

For the cited Samsung models, the guide specifies protection from solid objects larger than 1 mm and warns that the devices are not dust- or sand-resistant. Fine particles remain a serious hinge and display risk.

“A crease always means imminent failure.”

Visible fine bends can be a normal feature of flexible screens. Escalating physical damage or display symptoms, however, should be handled through the maker’s support channel.

“Any replacement screen film is safe.”

Protector rules are model-specific. Google’s Pixel Fold guidance specifically says not to remove its pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one.

What this technology enables

The hinge and flexible display are useful because they let one device change physical proportions. A closed configuration can be easier to carry, while an opened configuration provides a larger viewing or working area. Intermediate positions can support hands-free photos or other angle-dependent uses when the hinge is designed to hold them. Those benefits come from the coordinated mechanical behavior of the hinge and display, not from the screen alone.

The trade-off is a more complex stack exposed to bending, pressure and contamination. The best way to extend its life is to treat the inner panel as a precision flexible surface, keep the hinge path clear and read durability and protector claims as model-specific conditions rather than universal promises.
