How Do Engineers Test Rover Wheels for Lunar Missions?

Lunar rover wheels face mechanical, soil, terrain and environmental tests. Learn what engineers measure, what NASA’s VIPER and 2026 challenge trials showed, and why Earth results need careful interpretation.

Engineers test lunar rover wheels at several scales: they load and cycle the wheel to check its structure, run it through soil to measure traction and sinkage, drive a complete rover across terrain, and expose hardware to relevant environmental conditions. No single Earth test proves a wheel is ready for the Moon. Each test answers a different question, and engineers use the results to build and check predictions about lunar performance.

Why a wheel needs more than one test

A rover wheel must do several jobs at once. It has to carry its share of the vehicle’s weight, move through loose soil, gain traction without wasting too much motion in slip, and tolerate impacts from rocks and other obstacles. It must also continue working after repeated use. A wheel that performs well in one of these areas may still struggle in another: a design that grips loose soil could be less compliant over rocks, for example, while a wheel that survives a static load has not necessarily demonstrated durable travel.

Engineers therefore combine tests of the wheel itself, the wheel interacting with soil, and the assembled rover negotiating terrain. Environmental tests add another layer by examining hardware under conditions such as temperature extremes and vacuum. Earth facilities can recreate selected conditions and provide measured data, but they do not make Earth identical to the Moon. Gravity, soil, terrain, and the interactions among them all matter when engineers interpret results.

What engineers measure

Measurements are useful only in context. A traction value, for instance, cannot be interpreted fully without knowing the wheel load, soil preparation, slip, and test setup. Test reports therefore need to describe both the result and the conditions that produced it.

Measure What it helps engineers assess Conditions that matter
Wheel deflection, loads, and torques How the wheel and test article respond to applied forces and whether its structure changes under load Applied load, wheel design, and whether the measurement is static or taken during motion
Drawbar pull and traction How much pulling force the wheel or mobility system develops in a soil bed Wheel load, soil type and preparation, slope, and slip
Thrust versus slip How force changes as the wheel turns at a different rate from its forward motion How slip is imposed or measured, along with load and soil conditions
Sinkage and motion resistance How far the wheel settles into soil and how much the soil resists its movement Soil condition, load, terrain, and wheel motion
Endurance and physical condition Whether repeated loading or travel produces wear, damage, or a decline in performance Test duration or cycles, terrain, and inspection method

These measurements describe different failure risks, not interchangeable definitions of “good performance.” A wheel may develop useful traction but sink too deeply, or show little visible damage after a test while still losing some traction. Engineers compare results only when the test scale and conditions are clear.

How wheel structure and endurance are tested

Apply load and check the response

A mechanical test can apply a static load or repeat a load over time. Engineers observe wheel deflection and measure loads and torques to see how the structure responds. Repeated loading can expose durability concerns that a single compression test would not reveal. Wheel-level testing is valuable because it isolates the hardware and makes it easier to control the applied force and inspect the part.

Cycle a full-scale wheel or tire

NASA Glenn’s XCEL rig performs cyclic radial compression on full-scale wheels or tires in an environmental chamber. The setup allows teams to study repeated compression while using the chamber’s environmental capabilities. It is a wheel-level test: it can provide evidence about the component under the conditions set for that test, but it does not by itself show how a complete rover will handle a slope, loose soil, or a rock.

Drive a single wheel over controlled terrain

NASA Glenn’s XTERra rig drives one wheel over terrain elements and can impose controlled slip while measuring loads and torques. Its carousel and tire can be driven independently, creating forced slip from 0 to 100%. The facility page reports a maximum linear speed on the order of 100 centimeters per second, depending on load, and a settable vertical force of 1,000 newtons, with a 2,500-newton peak instantaneous force. Those figures describe rig capabilities, not universal qualification requirements for lunar wheels.

Controlled slip matters because the wheel’s rotation and forward travel do not always match. By varying slip and measuring the resulting forces, engineers can characterize how a wheel behaves across different operating conditions instead of judging it from a single run. A rig that isolates one wheel also cannot capture every interaction among multiple wheels, suspension, chassis, and vehicle controls.

How tests reveal wheel–soil behavior

Use a prepared soil bed

In a soil-interaction test, a wheel or mobility component moves through a bed of lunar soil simulant. A simulant is a terrestrial stand-in, not lunar material; its purpose is to provide a controllable test medium. Engineers can prepare the bed, vary conditions, and repeat runs to investigate how the wheel responds to the soil. NASA’s SLOPE laboratory uses prepared soil beds, obstacles, a drawbar-pull rig, and an adjustable slope bed.

Drawbar pull and traction show how much pulling force a wheel can develop in the test setup. Thrust-versus-slip measurements show how that force changes as slip changes. Sinkage records how far the wheel settles into the soil, while motion resistance helps quantify the force that opposes movement. Together, the measurements help distinguish a wheel that is moving with useful traction from one that is turning while making limited forward progress or becoming increasingly buried.

Change the terrain and loading deliberately

Engineers can vary wheel load, soil type or preparation, slope, and obstacles to understand what changes performance. A useful comparison holds relevant conditions steady or records how they differed. For example, traction results from different soil preparations should not be treated as an apples-to-apples wheel comparison unless the preparation and other important conditions are accounted for.

NASA’s historical lunar rover test plan listed static deflection, endurance, soft-soil mobility, and ambient and thermal-vacuum test designs. It is evidence that these questions have been part of rover test planning, not a current standard or a report of a modern wheel’s qualification. The age and status of a test plan matter just as much as the metric it names.

Why teams also test complete rovers

A single-wheel rig cannot reproduce every effect that appears once the wheel is installed on a rover. The chassis, suspension, other wheels, and controls all participate when the vehicle climbs, turns, crosses a rock, or attempts to recover from slip. Full-vehicle trials address those interactions by putting the assembled system on terrain that challenges its mobility.

NASA’s account of VIPER’s wheel testing describes trials on slopes, simulated slips, and selected rocks. The campaign included track inspection, measurements of sinkage and traction, and tests of rock maneuvering. NASA reported that one VIPER wheel traveled 25 miles over three weeks in a lunar-soil-simulant test bed. The reported distance and duration describe that specific test, not a standard endurance target for all lunar wheels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NASA also reported that the VIPER wheel was tested against 196 rock configurations with varied rock shapes, heights, and positions. Its physical condition and traction were described as only slightly degraded by the end of that campaign. That is a project-specific result, not a general pass/fail threshold: another wheel, vehicle, soil bed, or test objective could require different criteria.

Choosing obstacles is part of the engineering problem. In NASA’s VIPER testing account, ProtoInnovations CEO Dimi Apostolopoulos said, “Our biggest challenge was picking just the right rocks to stand in for Moon rocks in the test bed.” The point is practical: obstacle shape, height, and placement can alter the challenge a wheel faces, so a trial is only as representative as its terrain setup.

How environmental testing fits in

Mechanical strength and soil mobility are not the whole qualification picture. Hardware may also need to be assessed under relevant temperature and vacuum conditions. NASA Glenn lists environmental capabilities alongside its terrain testing facilities, and the historical lunar rover plan included designs for ambient and thermal-vacuum testing. Which environmental conditions are appropriate depends on the mission and the question being tested; the available descriptions do not establish one universal exposure profile for all rover wheels.

Keep completed tests separate from proposed follow-on work. NASA’s 2026 account of the Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge says testing on Johnson Space Center’s Rock Yard courses was completed. It described lunar-like dust, vacuum, and extreme-temperature evaluation as a possible next phase, not as work already completed in that account.

What a 2026 rover-wheel challenge can—and cannot—show

NASA’s 2026 Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge provides a separate example of prototype evaluation. NASA reported that five teams advanced from 128 submissions across 49 countries to the final phase. Challenge prototypes were fitted to a 45-kilogram test rover called MicroChariot and tested across courses at Johnson’s Rock Yard. The participation totals describe the competition; they are not wheel-performance measurements.

The course work let the teams’ designs encounter terrain demands such as obstacles, loose material, rocks, and slopes. NASA’s account noted that a rigid prototype bounced over some obstacles, while other terrain features placed different demands on competing designs. That illustrates why there is no single terrain result that settles all design questions: compliance and impact absorption, traction, durability, slope behavior, speed, wheel size, and loose-soil performance are distinct comparison axes.

Challenge results should be read at their actual scale. Testing a prototype on a 45-kilogram rover in a terrestrial Rock Yard can reveal how that setup responds to its course. It does not establish how a flight rover with a different mass, geometry, operating profile, or environment will perform on the Moon.

Why Earth tests cannot settle lunar gravity effects

Ground facilities can control wheel load and terrain, but lunar gravity changes the wheel–soil interaction. A wheel’s load affects how it presses into soil, and the resulting traction, sinkage, and resistance are part of what engineers are trying to characterize. Scaling the applied downforce can help approximate a target environment, but it does not prove that every reduced-gravity effect has been captured.

A NASA TechPort project describes research into a small-scale mobility testbed for parabolic-flight experiments that simulate lunar gravity. The proposed measurements include slope and drawbar pull. The project record describes then-current practice as scaling applied downforce for the target environment—for example, using one-sixth of Earth gravity for lunar missions—and frames flight data as a way to check that scaling and improve predictions. This is an active research question in the project description, not proof that all reduced-gravity effects are already resolved.

That distinction is important when reading an Earth test result. The test can show what a wheel did under its recorded Earth-based setup; extrapolating that result to the Moon requires a model and assumptions about gravity and soil behavior. Parabolic-flight work is one way to investigate those assumptions rather than treating them as settled.

Are there standard pass/fail tests?

NASA’s 2025 planetary tire and mobility testing white paper described itself as an early release and said a more thorough version was planned for late 2025. It stated that no current planetary tire and mobility subsystem testing standards existed. The publication status of the planned fuller version is not established here, so that statement should be read as what the early-release paper reported—not as confirmation of the standards landscape on a later date. The documented test programs also show why comparing wheels requires more than a single threshold: the test objective, conditions, scale, and mission all matter.

How to read a rover-wheel test result

  1. Identify the test scale. Establish whether the result came from a wheel component, a single-wheel rig, a complete rover, or an environmental chamber. Each scale answers a different question.
  2. Check the conditions. Look for wheel load, soil type and preparation, slope, obstacle or rock geometry, slip, temperature, and vacuum conditions where relevant.
  3. Match the metric to the claim. A deflection measurement is not an endurance result; traction does not by itself establish low sinkage; and a successful rock crossing does not prove performance in every soil.
  4. Separate measured results from predictions. Earth tests provide observations under a particular setup. A claim about lunar performance may also rely on modeling or scaling assumptions.
  5. Keep project figures in scope. Distances, rock counts, participation totals, and test-rover mass belong to the specific programs that reported them; they are not automatically design requirements for another mission.

What the test program is meant to establish

Engineers build confidence in a lunar wheel by assembling evidence across mechanical endurance, soil interaction, vehicle mobility, and environmental exposure. Component tests reveal structural response; soil beds characterize traction, slip, sinkage, and resistance; rover trials expose system-level interactions; and environmental tests address conditions that a terrain course alone cannot. The resulting measurements support engineering predictions, while the limits of Earth-based testing remain part of how those predictions are judged.
