Electric fields control collisions between cold polar molecules by orienting their electric dipoles and changing the forces between them. Those forces can reshape scattering and, in some conditions, create a repulsive barrier that keeps molecules from reaching short range, where reactions or other loss can occur. Microwave fields offer a separate route: they can create long-range bound states that produce tunable collision resonances. Neither method works identically for every molecule or collision regime.
Why an electric field changes a molecular collision
A polar molecule has an electric dipole: its positive and negative charges are distributed unevenly. A static electric field can orient or polarize that dipole. When two such molecules approach, their dipole–dipole interaction depends on the angle between the dipoles and the line connecting the molecules.

This angle dependence is called anisotropy. Molecules approaching along one direction can experience a different interaction from molecules approaching along another. Changing the field strength or direction changes the dipole orientation and therefore the long-range collision potential. The resulting changes can affect elastic scattering, inelastic transitions, and whether molecules reach short range.

In some molecular states and field regimes, the altered long-range potential forms a repulsive barrier. The barrier can prevent molecules from reaching short-range distances where chemical reactions or other loss processes may occur. This is called shielding; it reduces access to loss channels rather than making collisions impossible.

Shielding is conditional, not a universal property of applying a field. Its effectiveness depends on the molecule, its internal state, collision energy, and field configuration. Static fields can also change elastic scattering, so collision control is not limited to suppressing loss.
What experiments have shown
- In a 2022 experiment with a three-dimensional ultracold gas of 40K87Rb molecules, researchers reported that an electric-field-induced shielding resonance suppressed reactive loss by a factor of 30. They also observed angle-dependent thermalization, consistent with dipolar interactions that vary with collision direction relative to the field-set dipoles. Nature Physics (2022).
- A separate 2022 experiment controlled inelastic collision rates in trapped CH3F molecules by tuning a homogeneous electric field. It reported measured inelastic rate constants below 4×10-8 cm3/s. This is a different molecule and experimental regime from the KRb gas. Physical Review Letters (2022).
What calculations predict
A 2024 theoretical study calculated field-dependent shielding and scattering lengths for several species. Its calculations indicate that shielding can be effective for RbCs, and predict substantial scattering-length changes for more strongly dipolar NaK, NaRb, and NaCs. For NaRb and NaCs, the calculations also support tetra-atomic bound states and resonant poles crossing the collision threshold. These are theoretical results; they do not establish that every predicted behavior has been experimentally observed for each species. Physical Review Research (2024).

How microwave dressing creates a different kind of control
Microwave dressing is not simply static-field shielding with a different setting. Microwaves couple rotational states and reshape the long-range potential. Under suitable conditions, that potential contains a weakly bound state called a field-linked state. Because the microwave field creates the long-range well that supports it, a field-linked resonance differs from a conventional resonance based on shifting a pre-existing short-range state.

In a 2023 experiment with ultracold ground-state NaK molecules, researchers identified two field-linked resonance branches and tuned the inelastic collision rate by three orders of magnitude, from the unitary limit to well below the universal regime. They also observed a change in thermalization associated with the resonant channel. The reported states were weakly bound tetramers supported by the microwave-engineered long-range potential. A 2022 theoretical comparison describes the distinction this way: for ground-state molecules polarized by a static field, first-order dipolar interactions describe the dynamics; with microwave dressing, resonant dipolar collisions can dominate, with outcomes depending on detuning and polarization. Physical Review A (2022).
Static fields and microwaves at a glance
| Approach | How it changes collisions | Main controls | Reported examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static electric field | Polarizes dipoles, changing their anisotropic long-range interaction; in some regimes, a repulsive barrier shields short-range loss. | Field strength and orientation; molecular state and collision conditions also matter. | KRb shielding resonance and angle-dependent thermalization; CH3F inelastic-rate control. |
| Microwave dressing | Couples rotational states and can create a long-range well with weakly bound field-linked states that produce resonances. | Microwave frequency and polarization, as well as coupling conditions. | Two field-linked resonance branches and three-orders-of-magnitude inelastic-rate tunability in ultracold NaK. |
The examples are not a direct performance ranking: the experiments use different molecules and conditions, and report different outcomes. Reactive loss, inelastic rate constants, elastic scattering, and thermalization describe related but distinct aspects of a collision.

What determines whether a control method works
- Molecular species and internal state: dipole strength and state structure affect the potential and available collision channels.
- Collision geometry: the angle between the approach direction and dipole orientation matters because the dipole–dipole force is anisotropic.
- Energy and confinement: collision energy and the dimensionality or trapping geometry of the sample affect which outcomes are accessible.
- Field settings: static-field strength and orientation matter for polarization and shielding; microwave frequency, polarization, and coupling determine the dressed potential and resonances.
- What is measured: a reduction in reactive loss is not the same measurement as a change in inelastic rate, scattering length, or thermalization.
For that reason, a result in KRb or NaK should not be assumed to apply unchanged to another polar molecule. The cited demonstrations concern controlled cold or ultracold laboratory samples; they do not establish a consumer application.
