How Do Cuttlefish Hide? The Science of Their Changing Camouflage

Cuttlefish camouflage combines pigment patterns, reflective skin structures and texture-changing papillae. Visual cues guide the response, but the color-matching mechanism remains a puzzle.

Cuttlefish hide by changing both the pattern and the texture of their skin in response to visual cues from their surroundings. Pigment organs called chromatophores help create visible patterns, reflective skin structures affect appearance, and raised projections called papillae can make the skin look rough or uneven. The result is camouflage—not literal invisibility—and scientists are still working out how cuttlefish coordinate some of its details.

How cuttlefish camouflage works

A cuttlefish does not simply copy an object behind it. Its skin produces different patterns in response to visual features of the background, including contrast and the size of its pattern elements. This can help the animal blend into a particular setting or break up its outline so that a predator has a harder time detecting it.

Camouflage involves two distinct changes: the skin’s visible appearance and its three-dimensional surface. Together, those changes can make the animal less conspicuous from a given viewpoint and against a particular background.

How the skin changes its appearance

Chromatophores create visible patterns

Chromatophores are pigment-filled sacs in the skin. Muscles associated with each sac change how much of its pigment is exposed, and the combined activity of many chromatophores creates larger patterns. Smithsonian Ocean describes them as “thousands of pigment-filled cells that dot the entire body.” Smithsonian Ocean explains cephalopod skin and chromatophores.

Reflective structures also affect appearance

Other skin structures, including iridophores and leucophores, influence how light is reflected and contribute to the animal’s appearance. They are part of the camouflage system, but their presence alone does not explain how a cuttlefish achieves every apparent match to a background.

How papillae change the skin’s texture

Papillae are muscular projections that can rise from or flatten against the skin. By changing the surface from relatively smooth to textured, they help the cuttlefish’s outline and skin texture better suit its surroundings.

A 2018 study described rapid papilla expression and retraction, as well as muscles capable of sustaining tension without continued neural input. The authors proposed that this sustained tension could reduce the energy required to keep papillae raised. The study’s abstract summarizes the system as “a physiologically fast expression and retraction system” supported by muscles that enable long-term expression through sustained tension. Gonzalez-Bellido and colleagues’ 2018 study of papilla control.

What cues guide the camouflage?

Visual information can control papillae

Experiments on the common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, found that visual cues could drive papilla expression even when tactile information was removed. The authors concluded: “Thus, visual (not tactile) cues drive the expression of papillae in S. officinalis.” Allen and colleagues’ 2009 papillae study. The responses were not uniform across every set of papillae, so the details of how the system is controlled remain unsettled.

Contrast and pattern scale shape the response

Experiments have found that background contrast and the size of pattern elements influence which body pattern a cuttlefish produces. Researchers describe pattern classes that include uniform or stippled, mottle, and disruptive patterns. Rather than reproducing a background like a photograph, the animal responds to visual properties that can favor one kind of pattern over another. The 2008 study of contrast, pattern size, and cuttlefish camouflage.

The color-vision puzzle scientists have not solved

Cuttlefish camouflage raises a striking question: how can an animal reported to lack color vision produce camouflage that appears color-coordinated? A 2011 hyperspectral-imaging study reported good color matching when viewed through the eyes of fish predators, while leaving the mechanism unresolved. That result does not mean cuttlefish see color as humans do, and it does not establish exactly how the match is produced. The 2011 PNAS study of cuttlefish camouflage and predator vision.

Polarization sensitivity is a related but separate ability. A 1996 study reported polarization vision and patterns, suggesting a possible role in communication or recognition between cuttlefish. The evidence does not show that polarization solves the puzzle of color-coordinated camouflage. The 1996 study of polarization vision in cuttlefish.

What camouflage can—and cannot—do

  • It combines pattern and texture: chromatophores and reflective structures affect appearance, while papillae alter the skin’s three-dimensional surface.
  • It responds to surroundings: visual features such as contrast and pattern scale help shape the response.
  • It is not invisibility: camouflage can reduce detection under particular conditions, but effectiveness depends on the background and viewpoint.
  • Some mechanisms remain open questions: observed color-coordinated camouflage does not yet explain how the animal achieves it.
