Planets around neutron stars are confirmed; planets around black holes remain theoretical in the evidence reviewed here. Astronomers inferred the best-established neutron-star example from the precise timing of a pulsar’s radio pulses. By contrast, a 2019 model proposes that planets could form in disks around supermassive black holes, but it does not report a discovery. The key difference is therefore not just the host object: it is the gap between an observed planet system and a proposed way planets might form.

What counts as a planet around a neutron star or black hole?

A neutron star is the compact remnant left by a supernova. A black hole is a different kind of compact object, and the black-hole planet formation model discussed here concerns supermassive black holes surrounded by active-galactic-nucleus (AGN) disks. “Around” in that model means in the disk’s planet-forming region, at parsec scales from the central black hole—not close to the event horizon.

There is an important distinction between an object’s mass and its origin. A low-mass companion may be planetary in mass without having formed as a planet in a disk. The 2022 pulsar-timing search discusses very low-mass companions and a captured planet in a triple system; those cases should not be treated as interchangeable with planets whose formation history is known. For this comparison, the clearest neutron-star example is the confirmed system around pulsar PSR B1257+12.

The evidence is asymmetric. PSR B1257+12 has planets inferred from observations, whereas the black-hole case described here is a theoretical formation proposal. The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable current count of confirmed planets orbiting black holes, and they do not settle the status of every possible candidate across all black-hole masses.

What astronomers have found around neutron stars

PSR B1257+12: planets inferred from a pulsar clock

In 1992, Aleksander Wolszczan used the Arecibo radio telescope to identify three planets around PSR B1257+12, according to NASA’s account of the discovery. The method relied on the pulsar’s regular radio pulses. As the star and its orbiting bodies move, the arrival times of the pulses change. Measuring those small timing variations lets astronomers infer the motion of the pulsar and the presence of orbiting companions.

The pulse signal is useful because a pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star that acts as a highly precise clock. An orbiting body changes the pulsar’s position relative to Earth, so pulses arrive a little earlier or later than they would if the star were stationary. Repeated timing measurements can reveal a pattern consistent with orbital motion. The timing method does not mean astronomers see a planet directly as a separate dot of light; the evidence comes from the effect of the orbit on the pulsar’s signal.

A later systematic study gives scientific context for the system: its planets are approximately Earth-mass, and it remains a unique confirmed example in the discussion of pulsar planets. That description should not be simplified into a claim that all three planets are Earth-sized. Mass and physical size are different properties, and the account of the discovery and the later scientific characterization do not support that blanket description.

NASA’s 1992 discovery account says that Wolszczan found three planets. That historical description and later characterization serve different purposes: the first records the reported discovery, while later scientific discussion supplies context about the planets’ approximate masses and the system’s standing as an unusual confirmed case. Neither point means every pulsar with a possible low-mass companion has an established planetary system.

Timing evidence requires care

A periodic change in pulse arrival times is not automatically proof of a planet. Pulsars can show intrinsic timing noise, and changes in their magnetospheres can affect the observed signal. Those effects may imitate or obscure an orbital signature. Astronomers therefore have to distinguish the timing pattern expected from motion from variations produced by the pulsar itself.

The scale of the challenge is illustrated by a 2022 study in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Its authors applied Bayesian timing-noise methods to an archive of about 800 pulsars. That number describes the survey’s sample context, not the number of pulsars with planets. The study is useful here because it treats noise as a central part of the detection problem rather than assuming every timing residual has an orbital cause.

In practical terms, the inference depends on more than noticing that pulses do not arrive at perfectly even intervals. A candidate orbital signal has to be considered alongside the pulsar’s own variability, and models of timing noise help test whether the apparent pattern can be explained without a companion. A strong repeating pattern is a clue, not a shortcut around that analysis. This is one reason the confirmed PSR B1257+12 system is a more secure comparison point than an isolated claim based only on a timing irregularity.

There is also a historical caution: an early claim of a planet around pulsar PSR 1829−10 is not the robust exemplar to use in a present-day comparison. Later scientific discussion distinguishes it from PSR B1257+12, whose planetary system remains established. Referring to the latter avoids treating a superseded or uncertain claim as equivalent to the confirmed pulsar planets.

How neutron-star planets might form

Finding a planet around a neutron star does not establish how it got there. A neutron star is the aftermath of stellar evolution and a supernova, so a planetary system found around one poses a formation-history question. The sources describe several possible pathways, not a single origin that applies to every neutron-star planet.

Survival, fallback, or material from a companion

  • Survival or capture: A body might survive earlier stellar evolution, or a neutron star might acquire a planet through capture. These are possibilities distinct from forming a new planet after the supernova.
  • Supernova fallback: Material left around the neutron star after the explosion could form a disk and, under suitable conditions, give rise to planets.
  • Companion disruption or evaporation: Material from a companion that was disrupted or evaporated could remain around the neutron star and contribute to a disk or later planet formation.

These routes are proposed explanations, not a settled universal account of PSR B1257+12. An observed orbit tells astronomers that a companion is present; by itself, it does not reveal whether the companion survived, was captured, or formed from material left behind.

The distinction matters when interpreting low-mass objects. A companion can have a mass comparable to a planet and still have arrived by capture or another route rather than forming in a planet-forming disk. Conversely, a formation scenario involving a disk is a proposal about origin, not direct evidence that a particular orbiting body formed that way. Mass, present-day orbit, and formation history answer related but separate questions.

A dusty disk is evidence about formation, not a planet discovery

In 2006, Spitzer observations found a dusty disk around the neutron star 4U 0142+61. NASA/JPL described roughly 10 Earth masses of dusty material in the disk and reported that it might ultimately make planets. The figure refers to disk material, not to the measured mass of a detected planet. The disk is relevant evidence for a possible planet-forming environment, but it is not confirmation that 4U 0142+61 has planets.

NASA/JPL quoted the Spitzer study’s principal investigator, Deepto Chakrabarty, saying: “Pulsars emit a tremendous amount of high energy radiation, yet within this harsh environment we have a disk that looks a lot like those around young stars where planets are formed.” The statement concerns the disk and its resemblance to planet-forming disks, not a planet already found around 4U 0142+61. That observation underscores why a disk matters to formation models while also showing why disk detection and planet detection must be kept separate.

Wolszczan also described the disk as “direct evidence that the debris around a pulsar is capable of forming itself into a disk.” Here, too, the claim is about debris and a disk. A disk can supply material from which planets might eventually form, but the observation alone does not establish that the process has produced a planet. Keeping that distinction clear prevents the roughly 10 Earth masses of dusty material from being mistakenly reported as a planet of that mass.

What the black-hole planet model proposes

The black-hole case in this comparison comes from a 2019 theoretical model by Wada, Tsukamoto and Kokubo. It examines planet formation in the circumnuclear disk of an AGN: a disk of material around a supermassive black hole. The model describes dust growth and gravitational instability as ingredients in a possible formation pathway. It is a proposal about what could happen in that environment, not an observation of a planet orbiting a black hole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The modeled setting matters. An AGN is a luminous accreting system, and the model places planet formation in its surrounding disk at parsec scales. It does not suggest a planet is sitting next to the event horizon. The paper’s modeled outcome includes a planet of about 10 Earth masses. That is a theoretical result for the modeled AGN disk, not a measured mass for an observed black-hole planet.

The authors also discuss the difficulty of detecting such planets and potential indirect signatures. The 2019 model does not establish a successful detection or provide a confirmed black-hole planet catalog. It is therefore accurate to say that a physical route has been modeled, while the existence of planets formed by that route remains unconfirmed in the sources considered here.

This scope is narrower than the everyday phrase “planets around black holes” may suggest. The modeled hosts are supermassive black holes in active galaxies, not a catalog of planets around stellar-mass black holes. Nor does a planet-forming disk imply that a planet orbits at the black hole’s edge: the proposal places formation at parsec scales, in the surrounding disk. Those differences in host type and distance are important when comparing the model with a known pulsar system.

Detection is a separate hurdle from formation. For PSR B1257+12, astronomers have a repeating radio signal whose arrival times can be measured. The AGN model discusses possible indirect signatures, but it does not report that one has been observed and identified as a planet. The available facts do not support a specific detection claim, a measured orbit, or a planet-specific property for a black-hole system.

How the two cases compare

Question Planets around neutron stars Planets around black holes in the evidence considered here
Evidence status Confirmed examples include the planets around PSR B1257+12. A 2019 theoretical formation proposal around supermassive black holes; no confirmation is established by these sources.
Host and setting A neutron star is a compact supernova remnant; the confirmed example is a pulsar system. The model concerns a supermassive black hole and its AGN circumnuclear disk, with formation at parsec scales.
How a planet is identified or proposed Changes in pulsar radio-pulse arrival times reveal orbital motion, subject to timing-noise analysis. Formation is modeled through dust growth and gravitational instability; detection is described as difficult and model-dependent.
Formation history Possible routes include survival or capture, supernova fallback, and material from a disrupted or evaporated companion; no one route is established for all systems. A modeled pathway in an AGN disk; it is not evidence that a planet was observed there.
Relevant numerical example PSR B1257+12’s planets are described in later scientific discussion as approximately Earth-mass. The 4U 0142+61 disk contains about 10 Earth masses of dusty material, not a confirmed planet. The 2019 model produces an outcome of about 10 Earth masses; this is theoretical, not an observed planet measurement.
Environmental implications Energetic radiation and relativistic pulsar winds can affect a planet’s atmosphere; outcomes depend on uncertain details. Accretion-powered AGN conditions are part of the hypothetical setting; no planet-specific climate is confirmed.

The numbers in this comparison are not measurements of the same thing. “Approximately Earth-mass” describes the planets in the pulsar system, while “about 10 Earth masses” describes either dusty disk material around 4U 0142+61 or a modeled outcome in an AGN disk. One is an observed disk’s material budget; the other is a theoretical model result. Neither should be recast as a measured black-hole planet mass.

Why their environments are extreme in different ways

Neutron-star planets face the radiation and winds associated with a pulsar. These conditions matter for any discussion of atmospheres or habitability, but they do not justify a categorical claim that every such planet is either habitable or sterile. A cited habitability analysis describes a model-dependent habitable zone and emphasizes uncertainty in pulsar winds. Whether a planet could retain an atmosphere or support life depends on factors the existence of an orbit alone cannot answer.

In particular, the presence of a theoretical habitable zone should not be treated as evidence of life or even a guarantee of surface conditions suitable for life. The uncertainty about pulsar winds is one reason such claims need qualification. The fact that PSR B1257+12’s planets have approximate Earth-like masses does not by itself specify their atmospheres, surface environments, or habitability.

The modeled black-hole planets face a different setting: the luminous, accreting environment of an AGN. The model’s formation proposal does not provide a confirmed planet’s atmosphere, surface temperature, or climate. It would be misleading to use the word “black-hole planet” as if it automatically meant an object enduring conditions close to the event horizon, or to make a specific habitability claim from the model alone.

These cases are not a simple contest over which host is “more extreme.” The neutron-star system is observationally established, but its planetary conditions remain uncertain. The black-hole scenario begins with an extreme AGN environment, yet its planets are hypothetical in the evidence discussed here. The limits on what can be said are different in each case.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • There are confirmed planets around a neutron star: PSR B1257+12 is the robust comparison point, with planets inferred from pulsar timing.
  • A dusty disk is not a planet: the disk around 4U 0142+61 shows material that could be relevant to planet formation, not a confirmed world.
  • Black-hole planets are a theoretical possibility here: the cited 2019 work models formation in an AGN disk around a supermassive black hole, rather than reporting a discovery.
  • Formation and detection are separate questions: a plausible formation model does not demonstrate that a planet exists, while a detected companion’s mass alone does not settle its origin.
  • The available evidence does not provide a complete census: it does not support a definitive count of confirmed black-hole planets or an exhaustive claim that no candidate has ever been proposed.

The strongest comparison is thus one of evidence and method. Pulsar planets have been inferred from a precise repeating signal, with timing noise carefully considered. Black-hole planets in the discussed work are a modeled outcome in a disk where formation might occur, but the detection remains an unresolved challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have astronomers found planets orbiting black holes?

The 2019 work discussed here models how planets might form in a circumnuclear disk around a supermassive black hole in an active galaxy. It does not report a planet discovery. These sources do not establish a reliable count of confirmed black-hole planets, nor do they settle the status of every possible candidate across all black-hole masses.

How do astronomers detect planets around pulsars?

They measure changes in the arrival times of a pulsar’s radio pulses. An orbiting companion shifts the pulsar’s position relative to Earth, producing a timing pattern that can reveal orbital motion. Astronomers must account for intrinsic timing noise and magnetospheric changes, which can imitate or obscure such a pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the planets around PSR B1257+12 Earth-sized?

Later scientific discussion describes the system’s planets as approximately Earth-mass. Mass is not the same as physical size, so that does not establish that all three are Earth-sized.

Does the dusty disk around 4U 0142+61 mean it has planets?

No confirmed planet is established by the disk observation. Spitzer found roughly 10 Earth masses of dusty material around the neutron star in 2006; NASA/JPL reported that the material might ultimately make planets. The figure is the mass of disk material, not a detected planet.

Are neutron-star planets necessarily habitable or sterile?

No. Pulsar radiation and relativistic winds can affect atmospheres, and a cited habitability analysis treats any habitable zone as model-dependent while stressing uncertainty about pulsar winds. The existence of an orbit does not determine a planet’s atmosphere or habitability.

Does a planet around a black hole orbit close to the event horizon?

Not in the 2019 model discussed here. It examines formation in an AGN circumnuclear disk at parsec scales from a supermassive black hole, rather than a planet hugging the event horizon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Neutron-star planets are confirmed: PSR B1257+12’s planets were inferred through pulsar timing, though their formation history and environmental conditions remain uncertain. The black-hole case discussed here is different: a 2019 model proposes planet formation in an AGN disk around a supermassive black hole, but does not report a detection. The clearest comparison is confirmed pulsar planets versus a theoretical black-hole formation pathway.
