A faint point of light could be a nearby, cool object or a much brighter star far behind it. Astronomers distinguish those possibilities by combining the object’s spectrum, estimated temperature, distance and motion. If the object is too dim to see directly, they may detect it through gravitational microlensing: a temporary brightening of a more distant star when the object passes in front. No single clue settles every case. Mass estimates can depend on models, and a microlensing event may not reveal whether its lens is truly unbound from a star.
Why a faint dot can be difficult to classify
Astronomers do not identify a free-floating planet from its apparent brightness alone. A nearby object can look faint because it is small and cold; a distant star can look faint because its light has traveled a great distance. The two objects may appear similar in a telescope even though they differ greatly in temperature, distance and physical nature.

- What is it physically like? What temperature and atmospheric properties does its light indicate, and what mass do models suggest?
- Is it actually alone? Is there evidence that it is gravitationally bound to a star, perhaps in a wide orbit?
- What should it be called? The label “planet” or “brown dwarf” may depend partly on how the object formed, not just on its measured mass.
Spectroscopy and parallax can help answer the first two questions for objects whose light can be measured. Microlensing can reveal a foreground object that cannot be imaged directly, but it does not necessarily settle its mass or whether it has a distant host.

What a spectrum reveals about a faint object
A spectrograph separates light into wavelengths, much as a prism separates colors. The resulting spectrum contains patterns of emitted and absorbed light. Astronomers compare those patterns with known atmospheric features and models to infer the object’s temperature and atmospheric character. Infrared observations are especially useful for very cool bodies because their light can be studied at wavelengths where those features are prominent.
Water-vapor absorption is one example of a useful clue. It can support the interpretation that an object is cool, rather than a hot, distant star. It is not, by itself, proof that the object is a planet: the spectrum describes properties of the atmosphere, while classification also depends on distance, mass, possible companions and formation history.
The Orion example: temperature first, mass by inference
In an account of observations in the Orion Nebula, NASA described faint candidates whose infrared spectra showed water-vapor absorption. The observations supported the conclusion that the objects were within Orion rather than distant stars behind it. Their temperatures and theoretical models were then used to estimate their masses.

NASA’s report gave an estimated range of five to 13 times Jupiter’s mass for the objects in that study. That is a model-based estimate, not a direct weighing and not a universal dividing line between a planet and a star. The report noted that the estimates could change if the objects’ ages or the theoretical calculations were wrong. Age matters because a young object can be hotter and brighter than an older object of the same mass.

This example shows why astronomers combine evidence. The spectrum provides clues about temperature and atmospheric composition; observations across different frequencies help establish the objects’ location; and models connect those properties to an estimated mass. Water vapor alone would not establish all three.
How parallax separates nearby objects from distant stars
Parallax is an apparent change in an object’s position against more distant background objects when the observer changes viewpoint. Nearby objects appear to shift more than faraway ones. For stars, astronomers can compare precise positions taken at different points in Earth’s orbit; a spacecraft can also provide a separated observing viewpoint. With enough precision, the apparent shift gives a distance estimate.
Distance helps explain faintness. If an object is nearby, its low apparent brightness may reflect its own low temperature and luminosity. If it is far away, a brighter, hotter source may look faint because of distance. Without a distance estimate, those explanations can be hard to distinguish.

A NASA/JPL report from 2013 described cold brown dwarfs in a Spitzer study at distances of 20 to 50 light-years. A related NASA/JPL report gave the objects discussed a temperature range of 125 to 175 degrees Celsius (250 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit) and an inferred mass range of five to 20 times Jupiter’s mass. These are reported values for the objects in that study, not a general specification for every free-floating planet or brown dwarf.

The example illustrates the role of parallax: a distance estimate makes it possible to interpret the measured light and temperature in context. Astrometric shifts are small, however, so precise position measurements are required. Parallax is a distance test, not a direct test of whether an object formed as a planet or whether it has a distant companion.
How microlensing finds an object too faint to see
A free-floating object may emit too little light to be detected directly. Astronomers can still detect its gravity if it passes almost exactly between Earth and a more distant background star. The foreground object acts as a gravitational lens: its gravity bends the source star’s light, making the source appear temporarily brighter. The lens itself may remain unseen.
Researchers record the source star’s brightness over time and model the resulting light curve. The event’s shape and duration constrain the lensing geometry and motion. A short event can be consistent with a low-mass lens, which is why microlensing is useful for finding very low-mass objects that would otherwise be hard to observe.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why event duration is not a mass measurement by itself
The duration depends not only on the lens’s mass but also on its distance and its motion relative to the source and observer. Different combinations of those properties can produce events with similar timescales. A brief brightening therefore does not, on its own, prove that the lens is a planet or that it is unbound from any star.

A peer-reviewed 2019 analysis reported that, under the typical proper-motion assumption used in that paper, Earth-mass microlensing events could last about 0.4 day. The paper also emphasized that measuring parallax for events this short is challenging. The figure is tied to the paper’s assumption and analysis; it is not a universal duration or a rule that any event lasting roughly that long must be caused by an Earth-mass planet.

Microlensing parallax uses the fact that separated observers do not see an event from exactly the same viewpoint. If they observe the same event, its apparent timing or shape can differ slightly between locations. Those differences constrain the lens’s geometry and distance. Combined with other observations, that information can make a mass estimate more secure.
In a NASA Goddard account dated May 9, 2024, microlensing parallax was described as a goal of the CLEoPATRA mission concept. It was presented as a planned capability, not as an already operating mission or a routine completed measurement. NASA Goddard scientist Richard K. Barry said of the expected benefit: “The parallax signal should then permit us to calculate quite precise masses for these objects, thereby increasing scientific return.” The statement describes what the concept was intended to enable.
Parallax is not always available. In the 2019 analysis of two short events, the lens masses could not be determined unambiguously because microlens parallax was unavailable. That leaves a genuine ambiguity, rather than an invitation to choose a single mass from event duration alone.

Why follow-up matters for the word “free-floating”
Even a lens with a planet-like mass is not automatically proven to be isolated. It could be gravitationally bound to a star on a very wide orbit, with the host too faint or too far from the lens to have been noticed during the initial event. The 2019 paper said high-resolution follow-up was needed to distinguish genuinely free-floating objects from objects in very wide orbits.
“No host detected” and “proved to have no host” are different conclusions. Follow-up observations can search for a companion or resolve the lens and source more clearly, but whether they settle the question depends on the observations available and the system’s geometry.
What each method can—and cannot—tell astronomers
| Method | What it measures | What it helps establish | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared spectroscopy | Wavelength-dependent atmospheric absorption and emission | Temperature and atmospheric character; can help distinguish a cool object from a hot, distant star | Mass is inferred using age and atmosphere models; faint targets are difficult to measure. |
| Annual or spacecraft parallax | Apparent positional shift from a changing viewpoint | Distance, helping distinguish a nearby faint object from a more distant source | Small shifts require precise astrometry. |
| Microlensing light curve | Temporary brightening of a background source | Detects a dark foreground lens and constrains event parameters | Event duration alone does not determine mass or prove that the lens is unbound. |
| Microlensing parallax and follow-up | Differences seen by separated observers; resolved lens/source measurements | Can improve lens-distance and mass constraints, while follow-up may reveal a host | Suitable observations are required; very short events may lack measurable parallax. |
These methods complement one another rather than compete. Spectroscopy describes the light an object emits, parallax helps locate it, and microlensing can detect a foreground mass through its effect on another star. Follow-up can test whether an apparently isolated lens has a host. For some objects, the available evidence will not answer every question.
Why “planet” and “brown dwarf” are not always simple labels
Mass is important, but mass alone may not settle the name. An object with a planetary-scale mass could be called a brown dwarf if it is thought to have formed independently through a star-like process, rather than in a planet-forming disk around a star. Very low-mass bodies formed through cloud fragmentation have therefore prompted debate about whether they should be counted as planets.
The term “free-floating” addresses a different issue: whether an object is orbiting a star. It describes its apparent relationship to a host, not how it formed. An object could be planet-like in mass yet have formed independently, or it might be in a very wide orbit that has not yet been detected. A useful account of an object should state whether “planet” is being used as a mass-based label, a formation-based label, or a provisional description based on the observations.
NASA’s Orion report captured the excitement of finding planet-sized objects without detected stellar orbits, while also describing debate about how such low-mass bodies formed. That historical description is not a universal formal definition. The scientifically careful answer is to separate the measured properties—such as distance, temperature and estimated mass—from the interpretation of the object’s origin and status.
How astronomers reach a conclusion
- Establish what is being observed. Measure the source’s light and, when possible, obtain a spectrum to look for atmospheric features and estimate temperature.
- Check the distance. Use parallax or other location evidence to determine whether the object belongs to a nearby region or lies far behind it.
- Estimate physical properties with their assumptions attached. Compare observations with models to infer mass, recognizing that age and atmospheric assumptions can affect the result.
- If the object is not directly visible, model its lensing event. Use the light curve to constrain the foreground lens, but do not treat its duration as a definitive mass or isolation measurement.
- Seek additional constraints where possible. Microlensing parallax can improve distance and mass estimates; high-resolution follow-up can look for a host star.
- State the classification at the level the evidence supports. Distinguish a measured or inferred low mass from the separate claim that the object formed as a planet and is gravitationally unbound.
So astronomers tell a free-floating planet from a distant star by building a case from multiple observations, not by recognizing a distinctive appearance. In some cases, the evidence can establish that a cool, low-mass object is nearby rather than a distant star. In others—especially brief microlensing events—the honest conclusion remains that the lens’s mass or host status is uncertain.
