Astronomers could search for a planet around an invisible black hole by watching how the black hole bends light from a more distant star. That temporary brightening is gravitational microlensing; a planet orbiting the black hole could add a smaller, planet-like disturbance to the signal. Measuring the background star’s apparent position as well as its brightness can help identify the lens and estimate its properties. This is an indirect search method, not evidence that a planet around a black hole has been confirmed in the NASA and National Academies sources discussed here.
Why an invisible black hole can still reveal a planet
A black hole need not emit visible light for astronomers to detect its gravity. When it passes close to the line of sight to a more distant star, its gravity bends the star’s light. The background star can appear brighter for a time, even though the foreground black hole itself remains dark. Astronomers infer the otherwise unseen object from that effect on the light.

If a planet orbits the black hole, the planet’s gravity can further alter the lensing pattern. The expected planet signal is therefore not a picture of the planet or a direct glimpse of the black hole. It is a smaller feature superimposed on the brightening produced by the black hole acting as a gravitational lens. Detecting such a feature would require separating it from the ordinary lensing signal and other possible explanations.

How a microlensing search proceeds
1. Monitor dense fields of stars
Microlensing requires a close alignment among the observer, a foreground lensing object, and a more distant source star. As the foreground object moves across the line of sight, its gravity bends the source star’s light. The observed brightness rises and later falls as the alignment changes. The geometry is temporary, and the event is not something astronomers can arrange or easily repeat for the same pair of stars.
Because useful alignments are rare, surveys watch very large numbers of stars for long periods. NASA describes monitoring hundreds of millions of stars as necessary to find black-hole microlensing signals. Dense star fields provide many possible background sources in a small area of sky, increasing the chance that one will be suitably aligned with a foreground lens.
2. Identify the lensing event
A sustained brightening of a background star can mark a lens passing in front of it. The shape and duration of the brightness change provide information about the event, but brightness alone does not automatically establish that the lens is a black hole. Astronomers must infer what kind of object caused the signal and estimate its properties from the available observations.

For a planet search, recognizing the broad event is only the starting point. Researchers need a sufficiently well-measured lensing pattern to determine whether a smaller deviation is present. A planet’s position relative to the lens and to the projected images of the background star affects whether its gravity produces a detectable feature at all.
3. Look for a planet’s smaller perturbation
A planet near the black-hole lens can alter the light-bending pattern, adding a smaller anomaly to the event’s brightness curve. The National Academies’ Exoplanet Science Strategy describes the general microlensing technique: it measures a planet-to-host mass ratio and the planet’s instantaneous projected separation relative to the Einstein ring radius. The planet must be positioned so that its projected separation coincides with the lensed images for the perturbation to occur in a detectable way.
Those measurements do not necessarily provide a planet’s full physical orbit or an immediate mass in familiar units. Microlensing records a particular alignment and projected separation, not a complete orbital path. Converting the observed quantities into physical properties can require additional measurements, and different physical configurations can sometimes produce similar signals. The National Academies notes that additional methods may be needed to break such degeneracies.

The underlying planet-detection method is established for exoplanet microlensing in general. Applying it to a planet orbiting a black hole is a physically motivated search possibility; the sources described here do not document a confirmed planet orbiting a black hole.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Track the apparent position of the source
The source star’s brightness is not the only observable. Lensing also shifts its apparent position on the sky. Astrometric microlensing measures that tiny positional change alongside the brightness variation. NASA describes shifts of roughly one milliarcsecond for a massive lens. A milliarcsecond is a very small angle, so measuring it calls for extremely precise positional observations.
Position measurements can help constrain the lens’s mass, distance, and motion. Those are important for deciding whether the lens is consistent with a black hole and for interpreting a possible planetary perturbation. NASA says Roman’s spatial resolution is intended to make such astrometric measurements useful in its black-hole work; Hubble has also been used for astrometric microlensing.

5. Test the planet interpretation
Researchers would fit the brightness and position data together, asking whether a model with a planet explains the observations better than a model with a lens alone. They also need to consider whether another compact object or a different lens interpretation could account for the event. A deviation in a light curve is a candidate signal to investigate, not by itself proof of a planet’s orbit.
That caution is illustrated by a Hubble microlensing event involving an isolated compact object. NASA reports that the background star was amplified for 270 days. One team estimated the lens at seven solar masses; another team reported a range of 1.6 to 4.4 solar masses, which left open the possibility that the object was a neutron star rather than a black hole. The different interpretations show why classifying a dark lens can be difficult even when its gravitational effect is measurable. A proposed planet would add another inference to test, rather than remove the uncertainty.

What Roman is designed to contribute
NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Galactic Bulge Time-Domain Survey will repeatedly observe a dense region of the Milky Way, using microlensing to search for exoplanets, stars, and black holes. The survey design aims to detect more than a thousand wide-orbit planets through microlensing. That is a mission goal for planets broadly, not a forecast of more than a thousand planets around black holes.
Best Value
NASA’s design page specifies high-cadence observations every 12.1 minutes during six seasons, with lower-cadence observations to follow longer events. The Galactic Bulge survey is allocated about 15 months of observing time. These are observing-plan figures: the rapid sampling is intended to capture changes in short-lived events, while lower-cadence coverage can follow events that unfold over longer timescales.
The survey’s scale and repeated observations matter because the signal is transient and the target alignments are uncommon. Roman’s role is to collect the data needed to find and characterize lensing events, including possible black holes. A survey that can find a black hole or a planet through microlensing has not, by that fact alone, detected a planet orbiting a black hole.
How the methods differ
| Method | What it measures | What it can establish in this search | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gravitational microlensing | Temporary brightening of a background star; a planet can perturb the lensing pattern. | Can reveal a dark foreground lens and, in principle, a planet’s perturbation. | Requires a rare alignment and extensive repeated monitoring; physical properties can be degenerate. |
| Astrometric microlensing | The apparent positional shift of the background star. | Can help constrain the lens’s mass, distance, and motion. | The angular shifts are tiny and require high-precision measurements. |
| Pulsar timing | Changes in the regular arrival times of pulses from a pulsar. | Could reveal orbital motion if a pulsar and black hole were in a system that also contained a planet. | The sources discuss pulsar timing and pulsar planets generally, not a confirmed planet around a black hole; pulsar systems are rare. |
| Stellar-orbit dynamics | The motion and acceleration of nearby stars around an unseen massive object. | Can establish or constrain the black hole and its mass. | Does not by itself detect a planet. |
For the question of a planet around a dark black hole, microlensing is the most direct method in the sources considered: the black hole can act as the lens, and a planet can add a perturbation. Astrometric measurements strengthen the interpretation by tracking the source’s position. The other methods supply context about detecting black holes or planetary motion, but they are not equivalent ways to identify a planet’s microlensing signature.

Other evidence for a black hole
Microlensing is one way to infer a black hole through its gravitational effect, but astronomers also identify black holes by observing their influence on nearby matter. Stars can be seen accelerating around an unseen compact mass. In a binary system, hot gas in an accretion disk can emit X-rays. These observations show the broader principle: astronomers often detect black holes from their effects rather than from light emitted by the black hole itself.
Those clues do not automatically find a planet. Stellar orbits around a massive unseen object can establish or constrain the black hole, but the motion alone does not demonstrate that a planet is present. A planet claim needs evidence attributable to the planet, such as a distinct perturbation in a microlensing event or, in an appropriate system, a detectable effect on pulsar timing.
What a credible detection would need to show
- A well-sampled lensing event in which the brightness pattern is measured well enough to identify a smaller deviation.
- Evidence that a model including a planet explains the data better than a lens-only explanation or another plausible interpretation.
- Measurements that help characterize the lens itself, including positional information where available, so the black-hole interpretation is not assumed from darkness alone.
- A clear distinction between a candidate feature, a constrained planetary interpretation, and a confirmed planet orbiting a black hole.
NASA astronomer Kailash Sahu described Roman’s black-hole search this way: “Roman will revolutionize our search for black holes because it will help us find them even when there’s nothing nearby.” The statement concerns finding black holes, including isolated ones; it is not a claim that Roman has already found a planet around one.
