Astronomers detect black holes by measuring what their gravity does to nearby stars, gas, passing starlight, or spacetime itself. The black hole’s event horizon keeps light from escaping, but its surroundings can glow, and its gravitational effects can be measured even when it has no luminous companion.
What does “black holes emit no light” mean?
A black hole is not seen as a glowing object in the way a star is. Light cannot escape from inside its event horizon, so a telescope cannot collect light from within that boundary. NASA Science describes black holes as objects that “don’t emit or reflect light, making them effectively invisible to telescopes.” That does not mean a black hole must be undetectable: gravity affects nearby matter and bends light passing close to it.

It also does not mean every system involving a black hole is dark. Gas and dust outside the event horizon can heat as they fall inward, forming an accretion disk that emits radiation, including X-rays. In that case, astronomers observe the hot material and its response to the black hole’s gravity—not light escaping from inside the black hole.
These are indirect detections. Astronomers measure a signal, then assess whether the most convincing explanation is a black hole rather than another object or process. The kind of evidence available depends on the black hole’s surroundings and on whether the geometry of the system lets astronomers observe it.

How the four main detection methods differ
| Method | What is measured | What must be observable | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stellar or gas motion | Positions, velocities, or spectra showing matter moving under an unseen object’s gravity | Stars or gas whose motion can be measured repeatedly | The hidden object’s gravitational influence, with motion helping constrain its mass and compactness |
| Gravitational microlensing | A temporary change in a background star’s apparent brightness as foreground gravity bends its light | A background star and a suitably aligned foreground object | Evidence for a massive foreground lens; further observations and modeling are needed to identify it as a black hole |
| Radiation from surrounding material | Light emitted by hot gas and dust outside the event horizon | Material around the black hole that becomes hot and luminous | Evidence about the environment and its response to gravity, not light from inside the event horizon |
| Gravitational waves | Ripples in spacetime from a binary system spiraling together and merging | A black-hole merger whose wave signal reaches a detector | Evidence of a black-hole event through a channel independent of light |
No one method is best for every black hole. Motion studies need observable matter near the object; microlensing depends on alignment; radiation-based observations need luminous surrounding material; and gravitational waves come from mergers. The useful question is therefore not simply whether a black hole can be detected, but which trace it leaves in a particular system.
1. Measure stars or gas responding to hidden gravity
An unseen object can reveal itself by changing the paths of visible stars. Astronomers repeatedly measure a star’s position and velocity, then look for motion consistent with an orbit around a concentration of mass that cannot be seen directly. The orbit is evidence of gravity at work; measurements over time help constrain the hidden object’s mass and how compact it must be.
Gas can provide another kind of motion evidence, particularly around supermassive black holes in galaxies. Spectra reveal information about gas motion and properties. NASA explains that astronomers can distinguish hot, faster gas associated with an accretion disk from cooler, slower gas associated with star formation. That distinction matters because not all moving or glowing gas in a galaxy is evidence for a black hole’s immediate environment.
An example: an invisible object in Omega Centauri
NASA reports that researchers used more than 20 years of Hubble archival measurements, with Webb observations to refine astrometry, to identify a visible star orbiting an invisible object in Omega Centauri. Astrometry means measuring the positions of stars with enough precision to track changes over time. In this case, the star’s motion supplied a clue even without relying on bright X-ray or radio emission.

The example shows why a long time baseline can be valuable: an orbit is inferred from a sequence of positions, not a single snapshot. It also shows the distinction between seeing a black hole and detecting its gravitational influence. The star is visible; the object it orbits is not.
What motion can—and cannot—tell you
Motion can establish that an unseen mass is influencing visible matter and help constrain the hidden object’s properties. It does not make every invisible mass a black hole by itself. The interpretation depends on how the measurements fit together and on whether another kind of object could account for the observed mass and compactness. The evidence is strongest when the observed behavior rules out plausible alternatives.
2. Use microlensing to find an isolated dark object
Gravitational microlensing happens when a massive foreground object passes, from our viewpoint, in front of a more distant star. The foreground object’s gravity bends the background star’s light. As a result, the star can appear temporarily brighter before its brightness moves back toward normal.
The lens does not need to shine, and it does not need a bright companion. That makes microlensing especially useful for finding an isolated black hole that would otherwise have no obvious light source associated with it. The signal comes from the background star’s changing appearance, not from the black hole.

Why a lensing event is not automatically a black hole
Lensing shows that a foreground object is bending the background light; it does not, by itself, name the object. Follow-up observations and modeling are needed to interpret the event. In NASA’s account of an isolated-black-hole mass measurement, the lens had no detectable light and its inferred mass was too high for a white dwarf or neutron star. Those findings supported the black-hole interpretation.
This illustrates how evidence can accumulate: the lensing behavior identifies a massive foreground object, while the absence of detectable lens light and the mass estimate help distinguish a black hole from other possibilities. The method is powerful precisely because it does not require the black hole to be luminous, but it does require a favorable alignment with a background star.
3. Observe light from material outside the event horizon
When gas and dust fall toward a black hole, material outside the event horizon can heat and form an accretion disk. The disk can emit across wavelengths, including X-rays. Astronomers can study that radiation to learn about the environment and the effects of the black hole’s gravity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis is often the most intuitive route to understanding how something invisible can appear in astronomical observations: the black hole itself is dark, but matter around it may be bright. The distinction is essential. An X-ray observation of an accretion disk is not a view of light escaping from inside the event horizon. It is a measurement of radiation produced by material outside it.

There is also an important limitation: this method depends on surrounding material that becomes luminous. A black hole without such observable gas and dust may not be found through accretion radiation, even if it can be detected through the motion of a star, a lensing event, or another signal.

When a binary system containing black holes spirals together and merges, it produces ripples in spacetime called gravitational waves. Detectors can measure those waves, revealing a black-hole event without relying on light from the black holes. NASA’s educational overview explains that gravitational waves offer a way to find black holes without having to see any light.
This method differs from the others because the signal is not a star’s motion, bent starlight, or radiation from hot material. It is a disturbance in spacetime generated by a merger. It therefore provides a detection channel independent of visible or other electromagnetic light. Its scope is also distinct: the described signal comes from merging binary systems, rather than from every black hole in every setting.

As with the other methods, a signal must be interpreted. The observation is evidence of an event and its source, not a telescope image of a black hole’s surface. Gravitational waves broaden the ways astronomers can detect black holes, especially where light alone would not reveal the event.

How astronomers decide whether an invisible object is a black hole
The central task is to connect an observation to the object that could have produced it. Astronomers look at what was measured, how the signal changed, and what alternative explanations remain. A star’s orbit points to a hidden gravitational source; a microlensing curve points to a foreground lens; radiation can show hot surrounding material; and gravitational waves can indicate a merger. Each method answers a different part of the question.
- Identify the measured effect. Is the evidence a moving star or gas, a temporary change in background starlight, radiation from surrounding material, or a gravitational-wave signal?
- Ask what the method requires. Motion studies need observable matter near the hidden object; microlensing needs a background source and alignment; accretion observations need luminous material; merger detection requires a binary black-hole event.
- Compare the observation with alternatives. A lensing event alone identifies a massive foreground lens, not necessarily a black hole. Lack of detectable lens light and a mass too high for a white dwarf or neutron star can strengthen the black-hole interpretation.
- Use the evidence appropriate to the claim. Measurements may constrain a hidden object’s mass or compactness, reveal its influence, or identify a merger. They do not all provide the same information or establish the object in the same way.
This is why astronomers use “detect” rather than implying that every black hole has been photographed as a visible object. A detection can be compelling while remaining indirect: the black hole is inferred from measured effects that fit its presence.
Can astronomers detect a black hole with no companion star?
Yes, a companion star is not required for every detection method. Microlensing can reveal an isolated black hole if it passes in front of a more distant star from our viewpoint. A black hole can also be detectable through a merger’s gravitational waves. By contrast, the stellar-orbit method described above depends on measuring stars moving under an unseen object’s gravity, and accretion observations depend on luminous gas or dust around it.

Whether another method works depends on what else is observable and, for microlensing, whether the alignment is suitable.
Why several methods matter
Each detection route depends on a different physical trace. If a black hole has little observable surrounding material, a bright accretion signal may not be available. If no suitable background star is aligned behind it, microlensing will not provide that particular clue. If there is no measurable nearby star or gas, an orbital method may not apply. A merger signal, meanwhile, concerns a binary system coming together rather than a static object viewed in isolation.
Using different kinds of evidence lets astronomers investigate black holes in settings where one method is unavailable. It also keeps interpretation grounded: an unseen mass, a lensing effect, or a radiation pattern must be understood in context, rather than treated as automatic proof. The shared principle is that a black hole can be invisible as a source of light and still leave measurable effects.
