Astronomers detect antimatter mainly in two ways: they identify charged antiparticles in cosmic rays, and they measure the gamma rays produced when antimatter annihilates with ordinary matter. A magnetic spectrometer such as AMS-02 determines whether a cosmic-ray track belongs to a positively charged positron or a negatively charged electron by measuring its curvature in a magnetic field. Other detector systems measure energy and reject backgrounds such as the far more numerous protons. A second approach looks for the characteristic 511 keV gamma-ray energy released when a positron annihilates with an electron. These methods establish that positrons exist and reveal how many arrive at different energies; they do not, by themselves, identify the ultimate source of every positron or prove that dark matter is responsible.
What counts as antimatter in an astronomical measurement?
For the measurements discussed here, the key particle is the positron: the antimatter counterpart of the electron. It has the same mass as an electron but the opposite electric charge. That opposite charge gives astronomers a practical way to distinguish a positron from an electron while both travel through space as cosmic rays.

Detection does not mean taking a photograph of an antimatter particle. A detector records a sequence of signals: a particle leaves a track, bends in a magnetic field, deposits energy, and triggers different detector layers. Scientists combine those signals to infer the particle’s charge, momentum, energy and species. The result is a statistically selected sample of positron events, not a single visual image.
How can scientists tell a positron from an electron?
1. The magnetic field reveals the charge sign
When a charged particle passes through a magnetic field, its path curves. The direction of that curvature identifies whether the charge is positive or negative. A positron bends in the opposite direction from an electron under the same conditions.

AMS-02 uses a permanent magnet and a silicon tracker to record points along each particle’s trajectory. Those points allow the instrument to reconstruct the direction and amount of curvature. The curvature supplies the sign of the charge and, together with the measured path, information about momentum.
2. The amount of bending provides momentum information
A strongly curved track indicates a lower momentum than a nearly straight track in the same magnetic field. The tracker therefore does more than label a particle as positive or negative: it helps place the event in an energy or momentum range. Spectra can then be built by counting events in successive energy intervals.
3. Independent detectors identify the particle type
Curvature alone cannot reliably separate every positive particle from every other one. Cosmic rays contain many more protons than positrons, so a positive track could be a proton unless additional measurements rule that out. AMS-02 combines several subsystems for particle identification and background rejection:

|---|---|
| Permanent magnet and silicon tracker | Measures the charged track’s curvature, charge sign and trajectory-based momentum information. |
| Transition-radiation detector | Provides particle-identification information that helps distinguish light particles from heavier backgrounds. |
| Time-of-flight system | Records timing information used in reconstructing and classifying an event. |
| Ring-imaging Cherenkov detector | Adds velocity and particle-identification information. |
| Electromagnetic calorimeter | Measures deposited energy and helps separate electrons and positrons from hadronic particles such as protons. |
These measurements are deliberately redundant. A candidate is accepted as a positron only when the track, energy response and particle-identification signals are mutually consistent. This is essential because a small positron population can be hidden inside a much larger background of ordinary cosmic rays.

From one track to a positron spectrum
The practical analysis is a chain of selection steps rather than one decisive sensor reading.
- Record the passage. The tracker and other detector layers register a particle crossing the instrument.
- Reconstruct the trajectory. Software joins tracker hits into a path and determines the direction and magnitude of its curvature.
- Assign the charge sign. The curvature direction marks the event as positively or negatively charged.
- Estimate momentum and energy. The reconstructed path and calorimeter or other energy measurements place the event in an energy interval.
- Reject background particles. Transition-radiation, timing, Cherenkov and calorimeter responses are compared with the expected signatures of electrons, positrons, protons and other species.
- Build the population measurement. Accepted events are counted in energy bins. The resulting positron fraction or flux can be compared with predictions from ordinary cosmic-ray interactions.
Because every step has efficiency and background uncertainties, the scientific result is a measured distribution with corrections and error estimates, not simply the raw number of positive tracks.
What does a 511 keV gamma-ray signal mean?
The second major route detects antimatter indirectly through annihilation. When a positron encounters an electron, the pair can annihilate. The electron and positron rest energy appears in the resulting radiation, including a characteristic line at 511 keV. A gamma-ray detector sensitive to that energy can therefore identify an annihilation event even though it does not track the positron’s curved path.

NASA’s Fermi mission provides a clear demonstration. Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes produced in thunderstorms can generate positrons. Some of those positrons escape the atmosphere along Earth’s magnetic-field lines and travel toward a spacecraft. When they encounter material in the spacecraft, they annihilate with electrons. Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) detects the resulting brief burst at the 511 keV energy.

As NASA describes it, “The GBM detects the antimatter beam as a brief spike of gamma rays at that specific energy.” In this case, the antimatter was created near Earth and detected by a spacecraft in space. It is not a measurement showing that positrons arrived from a distant galaxy, and the gamma-ray line alone does not identify a unique astrophysical source.
How the two detection methods differ
| Question | Charged-particle method | Annihilation-gamma method |
|---|---|---|
| What signal is measured? | A particle track, its curvature, energy and responses in several detector systems. | Gamma rays concentrated around the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation signature. |
| Where is the measured signal produced? | During the positron’s passage through a magnetic spectrometer after cosmic-ray propagation. | When a positron meets an electron in material; Fermi’s example involved positrons produced by a terrestrial gamma-ray flash. |
| What can the measurement establish? | The charge sign, particle classification, energy distribution and positron fraction or flux. | That positron annihilation occurred and produced the characteristic gamma-ray signature. |
| What it does not establish by itself | The ultimate astrophysical source of an observed positron population. | A unique distant source or a direct measurement of magnetic curvature. |
The methods are complementary. A spectrometer identifies the incoming charged particle before it is stopped, while a gamma-ray instrument recognizes the radiation released when antimatter disappears in an annihilation interaction.
What is the high-energy positron excess?
AMS-02, along with earlier experiments including PAMELA and Fermi, measured a rise in the positron fraction at high cosmic-ray energies relative to expectations from ordinary cosmic-ray interactions. The observation means that an additional positron contribution, or a different combination of sources and propagation effects, is needed to explain the measured spectrum.

The excess is an observation, not a source identification. Nearby pulsars or pulsar wind nebulae are possible astrophysical contributors. Dark-matter annihilation has also been proposed as an explanation. The measurements described here do not establish that dark matter has been detected. Distinguishing these possibilities requires comparing the energy spectrum, directionality, spatial distribution and other signatures with detailed models; the source remains unsettled.

How many events have the instruments recorded?
Event counts must be read with their date and definition attached. They are not interchangeable totals.
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 9 million electron or positron events | Figure reported on NASA’s current AMS-02 page, accessed in 2026. It refers specifically to identified electron or positron events, not every cosmic-ray event recorded by the instrument. |
| About 25 billion recorded events, including 400,000 positrons from 0.5 to 350 GeV | Historical sample cited in NASA’s 2013 announcement of the first AMS antimatter-excess result. It is not the instrument’s current cumulative total. |
The historical result was presented by AMS spokesperson Professor Samuel Ting, who said: “As the most precise measurement of the cosmic ray positron flux to date, these results show clearly the power and capabilities of the AMS detector.”
Common interpretation mistakes
Confusing a positron with an antiproton
A positron is the antimatter partner of an electron. An antiproton is the antimatter partner of a proton and is much heavier. The detector signatures, expected backgrounds and scientific questions are different. A positive charge alone does not mean an event is a positron; proton rejection is one of the central jobs of AMS-02’s additional detector systems.
Treating 511 keV as a universal source fingerprint
The energy is characteristic of electron-positron annihilation, but seeing it does not automatically reveal where the positron was produced. The Fermi thunderstorm observation demonstrates local production, transport along magnetic-field lines and annihilation near the spacecraft. Other environments require additional observations to connect a line signal to a specific source.

Calling the positron excess proof of dark matter
An excess tells astronomers that the measured positron population differs from a baseline expectation. It does not choose between pulsars, pulsar wind nebulae, dark matter or other explanations. Dark matter is a proposed interpretation, not a confirmed conclusion from the excess alone.
Assuming a gamma-ray detector performs spectrometer tracking
Fermi’s GBM detects the annihilation radiation. It does not determine a positron’s charge by measuring its curvature in a magnetic field. That tracking task belongs to a magnetic spectrometer such as AMS-02.
How to evaluate a claimed antimatter detection
A credible claim should answer four separate questions:
- What was measured? Look for a charged-particle track and particle-identification analysis, or for a gamma-ray line and its energy resolution.
- Where was the signal produced? Separate particles arriving from cosmic-ray propagation from positrons created locally and then annihilating in detector or spacecraft material.
- How were backgrounds rejected? For a positron spectrum, check how protons and other particles were separated. For a 511 keV line, check the instrument response and competing gamma-ray processes.
- What conclusion is justified? Particle identification or an annihilation signature is not the same as identifying the original source, and an excess is not the same as a dark-matter discovery.
Using those distinctions keeps the strongest conclusion—antimatter was detected—from being stretched into a claim the measurement cannot support.
Why detecting antimatter matters
These observations test how cosmic rays are accelerated, how they propagate through magnetic fields and how antimatter is produced in natural environments. Magnetic spectrometers provide energy-resolved counts of individual antiparticles. Gamma-ray instruments show that annihilation can be recognized remotely through a narrow energy signature. Together, the techniques let astronomers study both the particles and the interactions that reveal them.
The central result is therefore precise but limited: astronomers can identify positrons through charge, trajectory, energy and particle-identification signals, or infer their annihilation from 511 keV gamma rays. The continuing scientific question is not whether these antimatter signatures are real, but which astrophysical processes supplied the positrons—especially those responsible for the high-energy excess.
