How Do AI Tools Affect Entry-Level Software Engineering Jobs?

AI tools can boost measured developer output, but their effect on entry-level software jobs is unsettled. Studies point to changing vacancy patterns, mixed hiring outcomes, and greater emphasis on judgment and communication.

AI coding tools can help developers complete more work, but that does not automatically mean companies will hire more—or fewer—junior engineers. The available evidence points in both directions: U.S. job-ad data show junior vacancies declining relative to senior vacancies after ChatGPT’s release, while a separate study links firms’ adoption of GitHub Copilot with a higher monthly probability of software-engineer hiring, driven by entry-level hires.

The clearest takeaway is that AI is changing the work and the hiring bar, but its net effect on entry-level opportunities is not settled. Productivity studies measure output, not jobs; hiring and employment studies examine different populations and use different methods.

What does the evidence say about AI and junior software jobs?

There is no single measured “AI effect” that answers whether entry-level software jobs are disappearing. Some studies examine how much code or how many tasks developers complete with an assistant. Others count job ads, hiring events, or employment among broader groups of young or coding-intensive workers. Those outcomes are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Across the evidence, three points stand out. AI assistance can raise measured output in some settings. Employers may be changing which skills and experience they expect from junior candidates. And the employment findings do not establish one dominant labor-market outcome: firms can use productivity gains to reduce labor per unit of work, expand what they build, redesign roles, or combine those responses.

Do AI coding tools make developers more productive?

Field experiments show that access to AI coding assistance can increase measured output or task completion. These results help explain why companies may adopt the tools, but they do not show how many junior engineers those companies will hire.

Completed tasks in three software-development experiments

A June 2025 Microsoft Research study pooled three randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company, involving 4,867 software developers. It estimated an increase of 26.08% in completed tasks, with a standard error of 10.3%. The authors also reported higher adoption rates and greater productivity gains among less-experienced developers.

That estimate describes task completion among developers in the experiments; it is not a forecast of hiring, wages, software quality, or the number of jobs in the wider economy. The participating companies and experiment conditions also do not represent every employer or every kind of development work.

Code output in a CodeFuse experiment

The Bank for International Settlements’ September 4, 2024 summary describes a field experiment of CodeFuse at Ant Group, introduced in September 2023. The experiment found a 55% increase in code output. About one third of that increase was directly attributable to generated code; the remainder was likely due to improved efficiency elsewhere in developers’ work. Statistically significant productivity gains were primarily among junior staff.

The measure was lines of code, not whether the code was better, whether total work quality improved, or whether employment grew. More code is not by itself proof of more useful software or a need for more developers. Read alongside the Microsoft experiments, however, this result supports the narrower conclusion that junior developers can benefit from coding assistance in measured productivity under some workplace conditions.

What do hiring and vacancy studies find?

Employment evidence is mixed. One study finds a relative shift away from junior vacancies in U.S. job ads; another associates firms’ adoption of a coding assistant with more software-engineer hiring, particularly at entry level. Broader employment studies report declines for some young workers or coding-intensive workers, but neither group is equivalent to entry-level software engineers alone.

Study and population Outcome and finding What the result does—and does not—show
IZA, June 2026; U.S. online software-developer vacancies Junior vacancies fell 14–15% relative to senior vacancies after ChatGPT’s public release. An event-study and difference-in-differences analysis of near-universe Lightcast vacancy data. The estimate is a change in the junior-to-senior relationship, not a 14–15% fall in all junior jobs or vacancies.
Wiley, first published April 22, 2026; firms adopting GitHub Copilot Adoption was associated with an around 3–5% higher monthly probability of software-engineer hiring; the association was driven by entry-level hires. The study uses proprietary LinkedIn and GitHub data. It reports an association, not proof that Copilot caused additional hiring.
U.S. Census Bureau Center for Economic Studies, April 2026; workers aged 22–24 across industry-state cells Regression-adjusted employment declined 12% in the most AI-exposed quintile over the ten quarters after ChatGPT’s introduction. This is not a software-engineer-only estimate. Hiring rates largely recovered by early 2025 on a smaller employment base; the paper notes possible earlier trend shifts around COVID.
Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 2026; O*NET/CPS-defined coding-intensive workers About 3% lower coder employment growth after ChatGPT’s introduction, after controlling for industry-level shocks. The group is not limited to entry-level software engineers. The authors caution that task reallocation and other relevant factors cannot all be controlled.

The vacancy result needs particular care: a smaller share of junior ads relative to senior ads can occur without the same-sized decline in all junior openings. It describes the mix of advertised roles. The Federal Reserve and Census estimates, by contrast, concern employment outcomes for broader groups, not the composition of software job listings.

The Copilot finding is not the opposite of the vacancy result in a simple sense. It covers firms adopting one tool and an association with monthly hiring probability; the IZA study tracks relative vacancy composition around ChatGPT’s release. The samples, exposure definitions, periods, outcomes, and methods differ. Neither alone establishes the net effect across all employers.

Are employers changing what they expect from junior candidates?

The IZA study finds that experience requirements rose mainly within the same job titles. In the remaining junior vacancies it examined, demand shifted toward problem solving, communication, and attention to detail rather than AI-specific skills. Its authors, Samuel Westby, Alicia Sasser Modestino, and Peiran Cheng, summarize the pattern: “Remaining junior vacancies shifted toward problem solving, communication, and attention to detail, not AI-specific skills.”

This suggests that the entry-level label may not always mean a role with little expectation of independent judgment. A junior engineer may still be expected to understand a task, assess a proposed solution, communicate trade-offs, and notice when generated code does not meet requirements. The evidence does not establish that every employer has adopted that expectation, or that AI fluency has replaced coding ability.

A small exploratory survey offers a useful counterpoint to claims that hiring processes have already been transformed everywhere. Chen and colleagues surveyed 32 industry professionals; most said their organizations had not changed candidate-evaluation methods to account for candidates’ use or knowledge of code-generation tools. Views were mixed about allowing such tools in interviews. The study submitted in September 2024 and accepted for HICSS 2025 is qualitative and small, not a representative employer poll.

Why can productivity rise while junior opportunities fall?

A company’s hiring decision depends on more than how quickly an individual can produce code. If AI reduces the time needed for a fixed amount of work, a firm might need fewer hours from developers. If lower costs make new projects viable or allow a team to build more, demand for engineering work could instead increase. A company might also change its workflow, redistribute tasks among existing staff, or hire a different mix of experience levels.

The studies do not settle which response dominates. Productivity experiments show what happened to measured work in particular settings; they do not measure the later staffing decisions those firms would make. Vacancy data record posted openings and stated requirements, not all hiring channels or the total amount of software work. Employment studies capture broader labor-market changes but cannot isolate entry-level software engineering in the same way as a junior-vacancy analysis.

Other changes also complicate attribution. The Census paper discusses possible shifts in trends before ChatGPT’s release around the COVID period. The Federal Reserve analysis controls for industry-level shocks but notes that it cannot account for every relevant factor, including task reallocation. It would therefore be too strong to say that AI alone caused recent weakness in junior hiring.

What should aspiring and early-career engineers take from this?

The evidence supports preparing for work in which coding fundamentals and judgment matter together. It does not test a particular job-search strategy or guarantee that any one skill will secure a role. A practical approach is to show that you can reason about software, use assistance deliberately, and verify the result.

Build fundamentals that let you evaluate generated code

  • Be able to explain what a change is meant to do, how it fits the surrounding code, and how you would test it.
  • Practice debugging and reading unfamiliar code, not only producing a first draft. AI-generated code still needs review against requirements and existing behavior.
  • Use tests, error messages, and clear acceptance criteria to check whether a proposed solution works; do not treat plausible-looking output as proof of correctness.

Make problem solving and communication visible

  • When presenting a project, explain the user or engineering problem, the constraints, the alternatives you considered, and why you chose your approach.
  • Show how you handle ambiguous requirements: identify what needs clarification, state assumptions, and communicate risks or trade-offs.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail by describing how you checked edge cases, errors, and maintainability—not just the happy path.

Use AI as a tool you can account for

  • For a portfolio project or take-home task, follow the employer’s rules about AI use. If use is permitted, be prepared to explain what assistance you used and how you verified the result.
  • Do not assume every interview permits an assistant: surveyed professionals reported mixed views on tool use during interviews, and most did not report changed evaluation methods.
  • Learn enough about the tools you encounter to assess their suggestions, but do not confuse familiarity with a specific product for a substitute for software-engineering fundamentals.

How strong is the evidence—and what remains uncertain?

The strongest evidence for short-run productivity comes from field experiments, including randomized trials, but those experiments measure output or completed tasks rather than labor demand. The vacancy and employment papers are closer to hiring outcomes, yet they study different populations and use observational comparisons or adjustment methods that cannot remove every competing explanation. The Copilot paper’s hiring association is based on proprietary linked data, which limits outside inspection of the underlying data.

These findings cover early AI-tool rollouts and changes observed through 2025 or reported in 2026. They do not establish a lasting forecast for the whole profession. They also do not reveal whether any particular junior candidate would have been hired in a world without AI. The most defensible conclusion is conditional: AI can make some development work more productive, and employers may adjust role requirements and hiring mixes, but the available evidence does not prove that AI will eliminate entry-level software jobs or guarantee their expansion.
