AI services can collect sensitive information in the content you enter or upload, through features and accounts you connect, and through operational data such as device details, usage logs, cookies, IP address, and location signals. What a provider does with that data afterward—including whether it is reviewed by people, retained, or used to improve models—depends on the service, feature, settings, plan, and contract.
How AI services collect information
AI does not need to secretly infer sensitive details if you provide them directly. But prompts are only one possible source of data. OpenAI’s privacy policy describes the following collection channels; exact practices differ among providers and products.

Prompts, uploads, and interactions
Text prompts can include personal or sensitive information. Depending on the feature, content may also include uploaded files, images, audio, video, and data from connected services. Messages and interactions with other users may count as content too. OpenAI’s privacy policy describes these categories.
Features and connected services
Enabling a connection or feature can share more than the text in the current prompt. For example, OpenAI says contacts are uploaded when a user chooses its contact-connection feature, and its policy also covers data from connected services. Check what a feature requests and what information it will expose before turning it on.

Account, device, and usage signals
Services may also record operational information that is separate from your conversation: account details, IP address, browser and device information, timestamps, feature-use and interaction logs, cookies, and general location inferred from an IP address. OpenAI says some features can use more precise location if a user chooses to provide it. These signals can still be personal data even when they do not appear in a prompt.
Information from other sources
A provider may receive information from safety and security partners, advertisers or data partners, and public internet sources. OpenAI separately describes publicly available and third-party information as potential sources for model development. That does not mean every piece of collected information becomes training data; collection for service operation and training are distinct uses.

Collection is not the same as model training
A service may process information to answer a request, run a feature, maintain safety and security, provide support, or meet legal obligations. Whether content may also be used to improve models is a separate question, and defaults differ across products.

- API: OpenAI says API data is not used to train models by default. That statement concerns training, not whether information is received or processed to provide the API service. See the API data controls documentation.
- Anthropic: Anthropic describes public internet information, licensed third-party datasets, user or crowd-worker data, and information users permit it to use among possible training sources. Its consumer training choices are distinct from its commercial services. See Anthropic’s consumer terms and commercial services information.
Therefore, “not used for training” does not mean “not collected,” “not processed,” or “not retained.” Read the terms for the particular service and account you use rather than treating a training setting as a blanket privacy guarantee.

Who may access information, and how long it may remain
Authorized staff and service providers
OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access content for specified support, safety and security, legal, or model-improvement purposes; access for model improvement is subject to the applicable settings. It also says content may be stored on its systems and service-provider systems in the United States and elsewhere. These are OpenAI’s stated practices, not a universal rule for AI companies. Temporary chats and consumer-account controls
OpenAI says ChatGPT Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. A copy may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI also says business and managed-workspace data are treated differently from personal consumer-account data. Consult the data controls FAQ for the controls and qualifications that apply to your account.

Deleted conversations and opted-in training data
Anthropic’s consumer retention page, dated July 1, 2026, says deleted conversations leave chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days. It also says that if a consumer allows chats or coding sessions to be used to improve Claude, qualifying data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. The statement applies to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled and notes other exceptions. Read the retention policy for its full scope.

Retention periods and deletion exceptions are provider- and product-specific. Check the current policy for your service, plan, region, and feature; the examples above do not establish how every provider or jurisdiction handles data.

Practical ways to limit what you share
- Minimize prompt details. Include only the information needed for the task. OpenAI advises: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.”
- Review data and personalization settings. Check model-improvement, memory, personalization, and temporary-chat controls. OpenAI places its controls in Settings and notes that availability can depend on plan, account type, and workspace settings.
- Audit permissions and connections. Before enabling a connected service or importing contacts, review what it shares. Check app and device permissions for precise location and other access as well.
- Use deletion and privacy-request options thoughtfully. Deleting a conversation or submitting a request may help, but timing and legal or safety exceptions vary by provider.
- Check workplace and API terms. Use the customer agreement and actual configuration for your organization or API account. OpenAI says approved API Zero Data Retention and Modified Abuse Monitoring controls have eligibility and endpoint limitations, and some application state may still be stored.
Questions to ask about any AI service
Before sharing sensitive material, find clear answers to these questions in the provider’s current policy and settings:
- What content, account details, device signals, permissions, and connected-service data does this feature collect?
- Can consumer content be used to improve models, and is that the default or a choice?
- Under what circumstances can employees or service providers access content?
- How long are chats, uploads, logs, and deleted data retained, and what exceptions apply?
- Do the business or API controls cover this account, endpoint, region, and configuration?
Compare like with like: the answers can change across plans, regions, features, and account types, so a provider-wide claim may not describe the specific tool you are using.
