A 2019 laboratory study took inspiration from the diving-bell spider’s air-retaining bubble to redesign a copper electrode for converting carbon dioxide. The hydrophobic surface held a gas layer underwater, shifting the reaction toward ethylene and ethanol and sharply reducing hydrogen production. It was a proof of concept, however: the gas layer also cut into the electrode’s active area and raised its voltage demand.
What the spider contributes to the idea
The diving-bell spider, Argyroneta aquatica, lives underwater while maintaining an air-filled bell. Its body and the bell’s air-retaining structure inspired the researchers’ approach: keep gas available at a submerged surface rather than let water fully occupy it. The spider does not convert carbon dioxide, and no spider material is part of the catalyst.

The biology is more complex than simply carrying an air bubble. The bell can exchange gases with the surrounding water, but that exchange does not meet the spider’s oxygen needs in every condition. Research on the spider’s physical gill describes these limits (Journal of Experimental Biology). A separate study found that spiders responded to carbon dioxide in their bells by surfacing more often and increasing bell-building behavior (PubMed).
How the hydrophobic copper electrode works
In aqueous electrolysis, copper can catalyze carbon-dioxide reduction, but hydrogen can form as a competing product. The reaction can also be constrained by how much CO₂ reaches the catalyst. The researchers addressed this by shaping copper into a tree-like, dendritic structure and coating it with a thin layer of the water-repelling compound 1-octadecanethiol.

When immersed in CO₂-saturated aqueous electrolyte, the modified surface retained a CO₂-rich gas layer. That layer increased gas availability near the copper reaction surface and altered which products formed. The spider analogy is about function and structure: hydrophobic features help retain gas in an underwater environment. It is not a biological catalyst.
Victor Mougel, the ETH Zurich researcher who led the study, told Chemistry World: “We were inspired by the diving bell spider, which traps a big air bubble near its abdomen using a dense layer of super-hydrophobic hairs,” (Chemistry World). The catalyst design and method were also reported by Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN).

What products the experiment favored
In the comparison reported by C&EN, the hydrophobic electrode shifted product selectivity toward ethylene and ethanol and away from hydrogen:

These are the values as reported by C&EN for the experimental comparison; they are not independent verification against the full underlying paper. Marc Fontecave told the publication: “This simple tweak drastically shifts the selectivity towards ethylene and ethanol with a drastic drop of hydrogen yield.” Ethylene and ethanol can serve as chemical feedstocks or fuels, but the reported product efficiencies alone do not establish a net climate benefit.

- Essential CO₂ Indicator: A must-have for serious planted tank enthusiasts and aquarium professionals. Effectively help maintain optimal plant growth and fish vitality. Create your thriving underwater paradise with confidence
Why the gas layer is also a drawback
The trapped gas improves access to CO₂, but it covers part of the catalyst surface that would otherwise contact the electrolyte. That reduces the active area available for reaction, lowering current and increasing the voltage needed. The result is a tradeoff: better product selectivity, but poorer current and voltage performance that constrain energy efficiency and practical scale-up. C&EN reported this limitation in its account of the work (C&EN).

The study, reported in 2019, demonstrated a way to change the selectivity of an electrochemical CO₂-reduction reaction using a gas-retaining, hydrophobic copper surface. Ifan Stephens, an electrocatalysis expert at Imperial College London, called it “a very elegant proof of concept” in Chemistry World (Chemistry World).

The cited reporting does not establish commercial deployment or the current state of later optimization. It also does not establish lifecycle emissions, process economics, or net emissions reductions. The result is best understood as a laboratory demonstration of a catalyst-design strategy—not evidence that spider-inspired electrodes are already a practical climate solution.
