A digital hearing aid converts incoming sound into numerical codes before amplifying it. That digital processing lets the device be programmed to emphasize different frequencies for a person’s hearing needs and listening environments. “Digital” describes how the device processes sound—not where it sits on or in the ear, or whether it is sold over the counter or fitted by a professional.
How a digital hearing aid works
A hearing aid is a small electronic device worn in or behind the ear. Its basic components are a microphone, an amplifier and a speaker. The microphone turns sound waves into electrical signals; the amplifier increases the signal’s power; and the speaker delivers the sound to the ear.

In a digital aid, sound is converted into numerical codes before amplification. Because the device processes sound in this form, it can be programmed to amplify some frequencies more than others and adjusted for different listening needs. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) describes digital aids as devices that convert sound waves into numerical codes, similar to computer binary code, and then amplify the sound. Digital versus analog hearing aids
The distinction is how sound is processed. An analog aid converts sound waves into electrical signals and amplifies them. A digital aid encodes the sound numerically before amplification, which supports more flexible programming. NIDCD notes that analog aids are usually less expensive, but lower price or digital circuitry alone does not establish which device will suit a particular person.
Digital describes processing, not style or access
Digital versus hearing-aid style
Terms such as behind-the-ear, in-the-ear and canal describe a device’s placement and form. They do not mean analog or digital: NIDCD says digital circuitry can be used in all hearing-aid styles. NIDCD: Hearing Aids
Digital versus OTC or prescription
“OTC” and “prescription” describe access and care pathways, not sound-processing technology. In the United States, over-the-counter hearing aids are FDA-regulated medical devices intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Adults buy and self-fit them directly. Prescription hearing aids are fitted and adjusted by hearing-health professionals; more significant or complicated hearing loss may call for prescription devices or another approach. Hearing aids versus personal sound amplification products
NIDCD distinguishes hearing aids for people with perceived hearing loss from personal sound amplification products (PSAPs), which are intended for people without hearing loss and are not FDA-regulated as medical devices. A PSAP is not simply another name for an OTC hearing aid. NIDCD: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

Possible signs of mild-to-moderate hearing difficulty include muffled speech or other sounds, trouble following conversation in a group or noisy place or on the phone, often asking people to repeat themselves, and turning up the TV or radio louder than others prefer. These examples are not a diagnosis. NIDCD: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids
Seek professional or medical guidance for ear pain; fluid or blood from the ear; sudden or rapidly worsening hearing loss; vertigo with hearing loss; or hearing loss in only one ear. Difficulty hearing quiet conversation or loud sounds can point to more severe loss, for which OTC devices may not work well. OTC hearing aids are not intended for children or for everyone with hearing loss. NIDCD: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

What to consider when comparing hearing aids
Digital processing is only one part of choosing a device. Useful considerations include:
- The type and severity of the hearing loss.
- Whether an examination, professional fitting or ongoing adjustment is needed or available.
- The device’s style and how easy it is to handle and use.
- The listening environments and features that matter to the wearer.
- Maintenance, repair and warranty arrangements.
- Total cost.
NIDCD advises that suitability depends on the type and severity of hearing loss; a higher price does not necessarily mean a better personal fit. NIDCD: Hearing Aids
