Digiscoping is taking a photo or video through an optical device: you align a phone or camera with the eyepiece of binoculars or a spotting scope, and the optic provides the magnification. A compatible adapter can hold a phone in place, but the setup’s fit and results depend on the specific phone, eyepiece, light, focus and steadiness.
What is digiscoping?
In ordinary photography, a camera lens gathers and focuses light from a scene. In digiscoping, the camera looks through the viewing eyepiece of binoculars or a spotting scope. The optic magnifies the subject, while the camera records the view. Kowa describes smartphone digiscoping as attaching a mobile phone camera to a spotting scope and aligning it with the optic’s axis: Kowa’s smartphone digiscoping guide.

This can provide a long-reach way to photograph distant subjects, but it does not guarantee results like a dedicated telephoto camera lens. Magnification narrows the field of view, and light, focus and movement all affect the image.
Can you connect a phone to binoculars or a spotting scope?
Yes, if you have an adapter compatible with both the phone and the particular optic or eyepiece. The adapter holds the phone so its camera lens lines up with one eyepiece. Some systems combine a universal phone holder with an optic-specific adapter; others are designed for particular phone models. Compatibility is not universal, so check the exact phone, optic and eyepiece before buying. ZEISS describes separate smartphone and eyepiece adapter components and lists supported scope models; its digiscoping information can help identify system-specific fit. Kowa also describes dedicated-fit and universal-fit approaches in its guide.

A spotting scope is commonly used for this setup. Binoculars can also be used when an adapter can securely align the phone with an eyepiece. In either case, a loose or misaligned mount can make it difficult to keep the camera centered and the image steady.
How to set up a phone for digiscoping
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the adapter fits your phone and the exact optic and eyepiece. Do not assume that a holder described as universal fits every combination.
- Mount the adapter. Attach the phone securely and center its camera lens over one eyepiece, following the adapter maker’s fitting instructions.
- Start at low magnification. Use a low-magnification eyepiece or set a zoom eyepiece to its minimum. A wider view makes it easier to find and frame the subject. Opticron recommends starting with a low-magnification wide-angle eyepiece or minimum zoom in its digiscoping guidance; Swarovski likewise advises beginners not to use too much zoom in its guide.
- Focus through the scope. Focus the optic on the subject, then lock the phone’s focus if its camera keeps hunting. Kowa recommends focus lock in its digiscoping FAQ.
- Take the picture gently. Tap the phone’s shutter with as little movement as possible. A remote shutter release can reduce shake; a cable release is another option where the camera and setup support one.
How to improve framing and image quality
Begin wide, then increase magnification
At high magnification, the field of view is narrow, so locating and tracking a subject becomes harder. Small movements also shift the framing noticeably. Start wide, center the subject, and increase magnification only as needed. Even slight camera shake can blur a highly magnified view, as Swarovski notes in its digiscoping guide.

- Shoot Without Touching the Scope — Use the included Bluetooth remote with this phone scope adapter to take photos or videos without tapping your phone and shaking the image, making it easier to capture sharper shots and share your view.
- Fits Most Phones & Many Standard Eyepieces — This smart phone adapter for telescope fits most iPhone and Android smartphones from 2.36"–3.44" wide / 60–87.5 mm. It also fits eyepieces with an outer diameter of 0.86"–2.4" / 22–61 mm.
Deal with a black ring around the image
A black circular border, or vignetting, can appear when the camera and eyepiece do not present a full, evenly aligned view to one another. Adjusting the eyepiece or scope zoom can change the light path and framing. Opticron says device zoom can reduce vignetting, while Kowa recommends adjusting eyepiece zoom rather than using digital zoom, which reduces image quality. See Opticron’s guidance and Kowa’s FAQ.
Pre-focus when the subject may move
If you expect a moving subject to enter the frame, focus on a stationary object at roughly the same distance first. This can reduce the time spent finding focus after the subject appears. Swarovski recommends this approach in its guide.

Reduce movement at the shutter
High magnification and limited light may require slower shutter speeds, making camera movement more visible. Keep the phone and optic steady, and consider a remote shutter release or cable release to avoid shaking the setup while taking a picture. Opticron discusses shake and release options in its digiscoping guidance; Kowa also lists a remote release and battery pack as optional field accessories in its FAQ.
Can you use a dedicated camera instead of a phone?
Yes. A DSLR or mirrorless camera can be coupled to a spotting scope using a telephoto adapter or a combination of an eyepiece and photo adapter. Some systems need a camera-specific T-mount. The scope provides the magnification and is used to focus; the camera records the image. Because high magnification relative to the scope’s aperture can mean slower shutter speeds, camera shake remains an important limitation. Opticron outlines camera coupling options in its digiscoping guidance.

What does digiscoping magnification mean in practice?
Kowa illustrates the relationship with an example: a phone-camera focal length of 22 mm multiplied by a 25× eyepiece zoom gives a 550 mm equivalent focal length; dividing 550 mm by the 35 mm full-frame reference gives 15.7× compared with a full-frame camera. This is a worked calculation from Kowa’s guide, not a universal result or a measured image-quality rating. The figure depends on the phone and optic combination.

- Less light: High magnification and limited light can constrain image quality and may require slower shutter speeds.
- Narrow framing: A small field of view makes subjects harder to find, frame and follow.
- Focus sensitivity: Shallow depth of focus can make precise focusing more demanding.
- Movement: Small shakes become more apparent at high magnification.
- Fit and alignment: An incompatible or unstable adapter can prevent reliable camera alignment with the eyepiece.
Digiscoping is therefore useful when you want to record a distant view through an optic, but results depend on the scene and setup rather than magnification alone.
