How Dexterous Robots Could Help Astronauts Work Safely on the Moon

Dexterous robots could help astronauts inspect, manipulate equipment, and take on selected lunar EVA tasks. Their safety value depends on reliable operation, suitable interfaces, and careful task-sharing.

Dexterous robots could help lunar crews by inspecting work areas, handling tools and equipment, and taking on some demanding or repetitive tasks during spacewalks. They may reduce astronauts’ exposure to difficult work, but they are not a substitute for crew judgment, spacesuits, or emergency planning—and NASA and JPL describe these systems as development concepts, not robots already assisting astronauts on the Moon.

What a dexterous robot could do for a lunar crew

“Dexterous” refers to a robot’s ability to manipulate objects with controlled, coordinated movements. NASA identifies dexterity alongside sensing, perception, planning, mobility, control, telepresence, and fault tolerance as areas of human-spaceflight robotics development. Its Robonaut program illustrates the goal of a highly dexterous robot that could help people work and explore in space; it does not establish that such a robot is deployed on the lunar surface. NASA’s Robotic Systems Technology Branch describes the vision as humans and robots working side by side.

For an astronaut on a lunar EVA, a robotic assistant might take on selected inspection or manipulation tasks, or help with equipment and materials. The practical aim is to let crew members focus their limited time and attention on work that requires human judgment. JPL says robotic archetypes could relieve astronauts of time-consuming or mundane EVA activities, with the potential to improve safety and productivity. These are prospective benefits of concepts under development, not reported outcomes from lunar operations. JPL’s overview of in-space robotic assembly and maintenance explains that rationale.

Ways robots could support safer surface work

Inspect and map the work area

Robots with appropriate sensors and perception could help identify hazards, examine equipment, and gather information about where a crew is working. NASA describes autonomous surface systems for navigation, exploration, and hazard avoidance. Such capabilities could support crew decisions, but a robot’s observations would need to be reliable and usable in the conditions at the site.

Handle tools and materials

A robot that can grasp and manipulate objects could assist with selected tool or equipment tasks. Its usefulness would depend on whether its end effector—the part that interacts with an object—can handle the tools and materials involved, and whether its movements are compatible with the astronaut’s work area. NASA’s lunar worksite guidance treats tool and end-effector design, grasp interfaces, and reach as connected considerations, rather than assuming that dexterity alone makes a robot useful.

Take on some demanding EVA activities

Every task a robot can safely perform may reduce the amount of time or effort an astronaut must spend on that task outside a habitat or vehicle. That is the potential behind JPL’s robotic-assistant concept. It does not mean every EVA activity can be transferred to a robot: the work has to be technically feasible, the robot must operate dependably, and the crew must be able to coordinate with it.

Support mobility or rescue planning

Robots, crew-assistance methods, walking-assist devices, and wheeled transport are not interchangeable. NASA’s lunar EVA rescue analysis examined several ways to help a crew member who needs assistance returning to safety. It found potential risk reduction for the options studied, especially wheeled transport, but did not establish that a dexterous robot would deliver those results. Rescue equipment also has to be assessed for feasibility and the resources it requires.

What NASA’s EVA rescue analysis found

A NASA Technical Reports Server abstract published in 2022 describes an analysis of 25 continual-reliance conditions in lunar EVA rescue scenarios. Ten were assessed as catastrophic, a Level 5 consequence involving loss of life. Within those ten cases, the analysis found that a wheeled transport device could reduce six to Level 4; crew assistance alone or walking-assist devices could reduce four. The study describes risk-assessment results, not observed mission outcomes or a guarantee that a particular device will prevent injury. It also says it remains unknown whether a rescuer astronaut could provide continuous assistance that allows both crew members to return safely, given suit geometry and human-performance factors. The options involve trade-offs: a transport device may offer greater mobility and risk-reduction potential in the assessed cases, while requiring additional resources. Crew assistance relies on another astronaut’s ability to help. These findings concern the evaluated rescue approaches; they should not be treated as a direct comparison of dexterous robot designs.

Why the worksite and interfaces matter

A robot can help only if it can safely see, reach, grasp, and work alongside a suited astronaut. NASA’s lunar science presentation identifies several interface envelopes that shape the design:

  • Reach envelope: whether the robot can access the equipment and work locations without obstructing the astronaut.
  • Tool and end-effector compatibility: whether the robot can use or interact with the tools required for the job.
  • Grasp interface: how the robot securely holds objects and how that interaction fits the crew’s work.

The presentation also calls for standard EVA and robotic interfaces. Shared, predictable interfaces could make it easier to design tools and work procedures for both people and machines. NASA’s Human/Robotic Lunar Science Exploration in the Artemis Era presentation identifies these as worksite-design considerations.

Challenges robots must handle on the Moon

Extreme temperatures and dust

Lunar systems have to function in a severe environment. NASA lists temperatures at the equator of up to 302 °F at lunar noon and down to -292 °F at lunar night, with permanently shadowed regions reaching -418 °F. Those figures describe different lunar conditions, not a single temperature range every robot will experience. Dust is another design concern for cameras, suits, habitats, solar panels, and instruments. A robot’s joints, sensors, grippers, and other exposed systems must be designed for the conditions where it is expected to work. NASA’s lunar surface technology overview discusses environmental and technology challenges.

Autonomy, communications, and fault tolerance

Robots may need to navigate, recognize hazards, and carry out parts of a task without continuous real-time direction. NASA lists autonomy, communications, positioning, navigation, and timing among the technology areas relevant to lunar operations. The cited material does not quantify communications delay, so it does not support assuming either uninterrupted Earth control or a specific delay for a given mission. Fault tolerance matters because a robot that stops working, misreads a situation, or cannot safely recover could add to crew workload rather than reduce it.

Power and operating time

NASA’s lunar technology overview includes power and long-duration robotic operations among the broader surface-system challenges. A robot’s usefulness therefore depends not just on what it can manipulate, but on whether it can remain available for the work, location, and operating conditions required. The cited sources do not establish a specific endurance figure for a dexterous lunar assistant.

Robots would share tasks, not replace astronauts

NASA’s lunar science guidance recommends that human assembly focus on items robots cannot affordably and technically implement. That points to task-sharing: assign suitable work to robots and retain tasks that depend on human judgment, adaptability, or capabilities the machine cannot reliably provide. In an EVA, an astronaut still needs appropriate life-support equipment, procedures, and contingency plans; a robot is one potential aid within that system, not a replacement for it.

It is also important to distinguish a dexterous assistant from other lunar vehicles and machines. A rover provides mobility; a pressurized rover is a crewed vehicle designed for surface travel; autonomous surface robots may navigate, explore, or transport regolith; and a rescue transport device is intended to move a person. NASA’s Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility page covers broader surface-mobility context. These systems may contribute to surface operations, but their capabilities do not prove that a dexterous robot is assisting a suited astronaut on the Moon.

What is established—and what remains a goal

NASA and JPL describe robotics capabilities, development areas, and potential uses for human-spaceflight and lunar operations. Their materials support the case that robots could help with inspection, manipulation, hazard avoidance, and selected EVA tasks. They do not establish that a dexterous astronaut-assistance robot is currently deployed on the lunar surface or already working alongside Artemis astronauts. NASA’s spacesuit information discusses suit development and commercial-provider context, not a record of such a robot’s lunar deployment.
