How Deep-Sea Corals Differ From Shallow-Water Reef-Building Corals

Deep-sea corals live without sunlight and generally capture food from the water, while many shallow reef builders rely partly on photosynthetic algae. Their habitats, growth, structures and coloration differ too.

Deep-sea corals live without sunlight and generally get food by capturing plankton and organic matter from the water. Many shallow-water reef-building corals, by contrast, live in warm, sunlit seas and receive much of their energy from photosynthetic algae living in their tissues. Both are animals made of polyps, and both can create habitat, but their different surroundings shape how they feed, grow, and form underwater structures.

What is the main difference?

The key contrast is not that one group is “real coral” and the other is not. Both are coral animals. The difference is how they make a living in their respective environments. Many shallow-water reef builders have a close partnership with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. The algae use sunlight to photosynthesize and transfer organic material to the coral. Deep-sea corals generally live where sunlight is too weak or absent to support that arrangement, so their polyps capture food carried through the water.

These are broad patterns, not rules that apply to every coral species. Corals occur across a range of depths and habitats, and some deep-sea corals build reefs and mounds. NOAA Ocean Exploration reports that over half of all known coral species are found in cold, deep, dark waters. That figure is a reminder that corals are not limited to tropical reef landscapes.

It is useful to keep the comparison focused on the familiar sunlit reef-building group rather than assuming every coral found at a shallow depth fits the same ecological pattern. Coral species vary, and “deep-sea” is a practical habitat description rather than a universal biological dividing line. The conditions—especially light and temperature—help explain the typical feeding differences better than a depth number by itself.

How do the habitats compare?

Feature Shallow-water reef-building corals Deep-sea corals
Light Usually live in clear, sunlit water where photosynthetic symbionts can contribute energy. Live in dim to dark water; sunlight is absent or insufficient for photosynthesis.
Depth descriptions NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet describes shallow-water corals as occurring at less than 30 m (98 ft). NOAA Fisheries describes deep-sea coral habitat from about 150 ft to more than 10,000 ft; NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet uses deeper than 50 m (164 ft). These are source-specific descriptions, not a single universal boundary.
Temperature Warm tropical or subtropical water is characteristic of familiar shallow reefs. NOAA says reef-building corals generally cannot tolerate water below 64°F (18°C). NOAA Ocean Exploration gives 4–12°C (39–54°F) as a typical cold-water coral range and reports some deep-sea corals at temperatures as low as −1°C (30°F).
Food Many host zooxanthellae that photosynthesize and transfer organic material; corals can also capture food. Generally capture plankton and organic matter with their polyps and tentacles.
Common structures Many deposit calcium-carbonate skeletons, and colonies can build the familiar reef framework. May form branching groves, gardens, reefs, or mounds, depending on the species and setting.
Color and bleaching Stress can cause corals to expel zooxanthellae, leaving the tissue stark white; this is bleaching. Some are naturally white. Because they lack zooxanthellae, white color alone does not mean they are bleached or unhealthy.

The depth figures in the table should not be treated as competing definitions. NOAA’s pages describe habitats for different purposes and use different cutoffs. There is no single depth line that, by itself, determines whether a coral is biologically “deep-sea.” Species and local conditions vary, and some corals do not fit neatly into a simple shallow-versus-deep picture.

The temperature figures are also descriptions of typical conditions, not an absolute test for identifying every coral. The contrast is striking: the NOAA Ocean Exploration fact sheet characterizes cold-water corals as commonly inhabiting 4–12°C (39–54°F), while noting that some have been found at −1°C (30°F). In shallow reefs, warm water is characteristic, and NOAA says reef-building corals generally cannot tolerate temperatures below 64°F (18°C). Those statements describe broad ecological patterns rather than identical tolerances across all species.

How do deep-sea corals get food without sunlight?

Coral polyps are animals. Their tentacles can capture plankton and other organic matter suspended in the surrounding water. In a sunlit shallow reef, food from symbiotic algae can be an important part of the relationship, but corals can also catch food. In the deep sea, where photosynthesis cannot supply that partnership, capturing food from the water is generally the central strategy described for corals.

This difference explains why it is misleading to call corals plants or to say that all corals live on sunlight. The algae associated with many shallow reef-building corals are photosynthetic; the coral hosting them is an animal. Deep-sea coral polyps likewise feed as animals, even in habitats where sunlight does not reach.

Water movement matters to these feeding animals because it carries potential food past their polyps. NOAA Fisheries describes shallow reef habitat as warm, clear, and moving water. Deep-sea corals also feed on material arriving in the surrounding water, though the available sources do not establish a single current speed or feeding rate for the whole group. Their reliance on suspended food helps explain why a colony’s position and structure can matter: branches and other exposed forms present polyps to passing water.

The broad contrast is therefore not “photosynthesis versus no feeding.” It is a difference in where much of the energy comes from. In many shallow reef builders, symbiotic algae make organic material using sunlight and transfer some to the coral; the coral may also take food directly. Deep-sea corals generally depend on food carried through the water rather than on a light-powered algal partnership.

Do deep-sea corals build reefs?

Yes. Some deep-sea coral species create reefs and mounds, so the claim that deep-sea corals never build reefs is incorrect. Many also form branching groves or other structures that resemble underwater gardens rather than the broad tropical reef landscape familiar from shallow seas. The form depends on the coral and habitat; “deep-sea coral” does not name one architecture.

Shallow reef-building corals commonly deposit calcium-carbonate skeletons. As colonies grow, those skeletons can contribute to the framework of a reef. Deep-sea coral colonies can likewise create physical structure, though not every colony forms a reef. NOAA Fisheries notes that deep-sea coral structures provide habitat for fish, shrimp, crabs, and other organisms. Their ecological value therefore includes the shelter and living space created by the coral, not only the coral animals themselves.

The familiar tropical reef is only one way corals can shape habitat. A branching deep-sea grove may be important to animals living among its structures even when it does not look like a shallow-water reef. Conversely, the ability of some deep-sea corals to build reefs does not mean all deep corals do so.

How fast do they grow, and how long can they live?

Growth varies substantially among coral species and conditions, so a single rate would be misleading. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet gives a shallow-water coral growth range of 0.3–10 cm (0.1–4 in) per year, depending on species. That is a broad range, not a promise that any individual shallow coral grows at one of those rates in every setting.

The same NOAA fact sheet says most deep-sea coral species grow very slowly, with some growing only a few millimeters per year. It also reports that many live for hundreds of years and that some colonies exceed 4,000 years. Those are examples of the long lifespans reported for deep-sea corals, not an age estimate for every species or colony.

Slow growth and great longevity make deep-sea coral structures especially vulnerable to physical damage: recovery cannot be assumed to happen quickly. NOAA Fisheries says bottom trawling can reduce delicate coral gardens to rubble. The exact recovery time for a damaged habitat is not established by the figures above, so it should not be inferred from a growth rate alone.

Are deep-sea corals white because they are bleached?

Not necessarily. In shallow-water reef-building corals, bleaching generally means that stress has led the coral to expel its symbiotic zooxanthellae. Because the algae contribute color, the coral can appear stark white after losing them. Bleaching is a change associated with the loss of the symbiosis, not a description of every white coral.

Deep-sea corals lack those photosynthetic zooxanthellae, and some are naturally white. Their color alone is therefore not a reliable way to judge health or diagnose bleaching. The same appearance can have different explanations in a shallow reef coral and a deep-sea coral.

What threats affect deep-sea coral habitat?

Physical damage is a documented concern. NOAA Fisheries says bottom trawling can break delicate coral gardens down into rubble. The scale of this habitat is also not fully known: the agency describes deep-sea coral and sponge environments as “the largest yet least known environment on Earth” and notes that the full extent of these habitats remains poorly mapped.

NOAA Fisheries also says the effects of warming, ocean acidification, salinity changes, mineral extraction, and oil spills on deep-water coral habitats have not been studied in depth. That is a statement about the limits of established knowledge, not evidence that these pressures have no effect. The available information does not support a categorical ranking of shallow-water and deep-sea corals as more or less vulnerable to climate change overall.

Habitat structure matters when considering damage: breaking a colony can remove both living coral and the three-dimensional refuge it provides to other animals. At the same time, incomplete mapping means that the known distribution cannot be assumed to represent the full extent of deep-sea coral habitat. NOAA Fisheries notes that less than 0.05% of the seafloor had been mapped in its description of the issue; because mapping changes over time, that figure should be understood as a time-specific snapshot rather than a current total.

How to interpret the comparison

  • Focus first on energy and feeding. Many shallow reef builders benefit from photosynthetic algae; deep-sea corals generally capture plankton and organic matter from surrounding water.
  • Treat depth cutoffs as descriptions, not laws. NOAA sources use different thresholds, and the habitats and species overlap across a broad ocean range.
  • Do not equate coral with tropical reef. Some deep-sea corals build reefs and mounds, while many form other kinds of habitat.
  • Do not diagnose coral health from color alone. White may follow bleaching in a shallow coral, but it can be normal in a deep-sea coral.
  • Keep growth figures tied to their source and scope. NOAA’s ranges vary by species, and reported exceptional ages do not describe every colony.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between deep-sea and shallow-water corals?

The main difference is the environment and typical energy source. Many shallow-water reef-building corals live in warm, sunlit water and receive organic material from symbiotic zooxanthellae. Deep-sea corals generally live in dim or dark, often colder water and capture plankton and organic matter with their polyps.

How do deep-sea corals get food without sunlight?

Their polyps use tentacles to capture plankton and organic matter carried through the surrounding water. They do not rely on sunlight-driven photosynthesis by zooxanthellae in the way many shallow reef builders do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do deep-sea corals build reefs?

Yes. Some deep-sea coral species build reefs and mounds, while others form branching groves, gardens, or other structures. Not every deep-sea coral colony creates a reef.

Are deep-sea corals white because they are bleached?

Not necessarily. Deep-sea corals lack the symbiotic zooxanthellae associated with bleaching in many shallow-water corals, and some are naturally white. Color alone is not a reliable health indicator.

How deep do deep-sea corals live?

NOAA Fisheries describes deep-sea coral habitat from about 150 feet to more than 10,000 feet. NOAA Ocean Exploration uses a different descriptive threshold—deeper than 50 meters (164 feet)—so these figures are not a single universal boundary.

The Bottom Line

Both shallow reef builders and deep-sea corals are animals, but their environments shape how they obtain food and build habitat. Many shallow reef builders benefit from sunlight-powered zooxanthellae; deep-sea corals generally capture food from surrounding water. Some deep corals build reefs, and naturally white coloration does not by itself mean bleaching.
