Crystals of reduced [2₄]paracyclophanetetraene (PCT) provide direct structural evidence that its π electrons can delocalize around the whole molecule. In the di-anion, a 26π-electron pathway is assigned as globally aromatic; after two more electrons are added, the 28π-electron tetra-anion is assigned as globally anti-aromatic. The structures, bond lengths and optical spectra distinguish the two states, while also illustrating why aromaticity is inferred from several kinds of evidence rather than a single measurement.
What changes when PCT gains electrons?
Neutral [2₄]paracyclophanetetraene is a macrocyclic hydrocarbon whose four benzene-like Clar sextets are separated by cis-vinylene bridges. In that neutral structure, the π-electron systems are described as localized rather than circulating around the entire macrocycle.

Reduction changes the picture. The 2023 study by Wojciech Stawski, Yikun Zhu, Zheng Wei, Marina A. Petrukhina and Harry L. Anderson reports structures for two reduced forms: the di-anion, formed by adding two electrons, and the tetra-anion, formed by adding four. The authors assign global aromaticity to the di-anion’s 26π-electron pathway and global anti-aromaticity to the tetra-anion’s 28π-electron pathway. The paper was published in Chemical Science on 20 September 2023.

Earlier aromaticity assignments for these reduced species relied on NMR measurements of molecules generated in situ. The new work reports solid-state X-ray structures, allowing the researchers to examine the molecular geometries directly. The reported crystallographic geometries agree with gas-phase calculated structures, supporting the structural interpretation of the two electronic states.

Bond lengths and symmetry
Changes in bond lengths provide evidence about how electron density is distributed through the macrocycle. The di-anion’s structure is consistent with greater delocalization around the global pathway, while the tetra-anion has the low-symmetry geometry expected for an anti-aromatic ring. The authors also report that coordinating metals has little effect on the measured bond lengths across the structures they studied.
These structural observations support the aromaticity assignments; they are not a standalone definition or proof of aromaticity. Chemists assess aromatic character through multiple indicators, and structural evidence is most informative when considered alongside electronic and spectroscopic evidence.

The 878 nm feature is a reported spectral observation for the di-anion, not evidence by itself of a practical sensing or device use. The broad tetra-anion spectrum is described in the paper as typical of an anti-aromatic system. Both observations are reported in the primary article.

Why crystallizing the reduced forms was difficult
The reduced salts are sensitive to oxygen and moisture, making crystals suitable for structural analysis challenging to obtain. Chemistry World reported that the team used alkali metals in THF, added hexane and sealed the samples in flame-sealed glass ampules. These are details of specialist laboratory work, not a procedure for general readers to attempt.

What the aromaticity interpretation does—and does not—settle
The structural, calculated and optical observations reinforce the distinction between the two reduced states. But aromaticity is a concept interpreted through several criteria, and the interpretation is not presented as uncontested. Chemistry World quoted aromaticity expert Miquel Solà of the University of Girona describing the study as a “great contribution to the understanding of how aromaticity of macrocycles changes upon reduction.” He also noted that migration of Clar’s sextets may account for some observations.

The paper points to PCT’s redox activity as a reason it may be promising as a battery-electrode material and notes that derivatives have been synthesized for that application. That is a possible research direction, not evidence that PCT is an available battery material, a working commercial battery, or a consumer technology. The reported comparison of aromaticity and optical spectra does not establish which reduced state would perform better as an electrode.
