A headwind reduces groundspeed along your route; a tailwind increases it. A crosswind mainly pushes an aircraft off course, so it is not subtracted from airspeed as a full-speed penalty. To calculate the effect, resolve the wind into components along and across the aircraft’s ground track—and use a wind triangle when correcting heading to hold that track.
Airspeed and groundspeed measure different motion
Airspeed describes an aircraft’s motion through the surrounding air. Groundspeed describes its progress over the ground. Because the air mass itself moves, wind changes groundspeed even when airspeed stays the same. The FAA’s Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge illustrates this with an aircraft flying east at 120 knots: a 20-knot wind moving east gives 140 knots groundspeed, while a 20-knot wind moving west gives 100 knots. The airspeed is 120 knots in both cases.
How to resolve wind into components
Compare the wind vector with the direction of the desired ground track—or, for runway calculations, with the runway heading. The wind’s projection along that direction is the along-track component; its projection at right angles is the cross-track component. If W is wind speed and θ is the angle between the wind’s direction of travel and the track, the component magnitudes are W cos θ along the track and W sin θ across it.
Operational wind reports ordinarily give the direction the wind is coming from, not the direction it is moving toward. Account for that convention before applying the formulas: a wind coming from ahead is a headwind, and one coming from behind is a tailwind. The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual describes determining headwind, tailwind, and crosswind components relative to a runway using a component chart, and points pilots to comparable manufacturer information.

What each component does to groundspeed
- Headwind: Acts against progress along the track and reduces groundspeed.
- Tailwind: Acts in the direction of travel and increases groundspeed.
- Crosswind: Acts sideways, tending to move the aircraft off its intended track. It is not, by itself, a full-speed subtraction from groundspeed.
For straight travel on the same heading, the along-track wind component adds to or subtracts from the aircraft’s airspeed along that direction. A pure crosswind has no along-track component in that simplified case, but it causes lateral drift. If the pilot turns into the wind to preserve the desired ground track, heading and track no longer match. The resulting groundspeed must be found from the wind triangle, combining the aircraft’s velocity through the air with the movement of the air mass. The FAA handbook explains that groundspeed can be determined before flight by constructing a wind triangle.
Worked example: a 20-knot wind
For the FAA handbook’s eastbound example, assume 120 knots airspeed and a 20-knot wind:

| Wind relative to the eastbound track | Along-track effect | Groundspeed |
|---|---|---|
| From behind, moving east | 20-knot tailwind adds to progress | 140 knots |
| From ahead, moving west | 20-knot headwind opposes progress | 100 knots |
| From the side | No direct along-track component if heading is unchanged; the aircraft drifts sideways | Requires a wind-triangle solution if maintaining a particular ground track |
The first two results isolate the along-track effect. The side-wind case is different: subtracting the entire crosswind from airspeed would confuse sideways motion with motion along the route.
Runway components and en-route groundspeed answer different questions
Runway-relative calculation
For takeoff or landing, compare reported wind direction and speed with the actual runway heading. The resulting headwind or tailwind and crosswind components describe the wind relative to that runway. The FAA AIM’s component-chart guidance is intended for this runway-oriented calculation.

En-route calculation
For navigation along a desired course, use the wind triangle if the aircraft’s heading is adjusted to counter drift. A runway component chart alone does not give the complete answer for that situation: the required heading correction and the resulting groundspeed depend on the aircraft’s airspeed and the wind vector.

A calculated crosswind component is one input to an operational decision, not proof that a takeoff or landing is acceptable. Check the applicable aircraft manufacturer information and consider pilot proficiency, gusts, variable wind, runway condition, and local procedures. The FAA’s Airplane Flying Handbook, Chapter 9, advises pilots to determine the maximum crosswind component for each airplane they fly and to avoid conditions beyond the airplane’s capability. FAA aviation-weather guidance also identifies crosswinds, gusts, tailwinds, variable winds, and sudden shifts as adverse-wind concerns, particularly during takeoff and landing; see AC 00-6B, Aviation Weather.
