Cross-play lets people on different platforms play the same game together—but it is not a universal switch. Epic’s path to Fortnite cross-play combined early technical tests, shared account and party systems, and a major policy change from PlayStation in 2018. Even now, support depends on the game and the platforms it chooses to connect.
What cross-play means—and what it does not
Cross-play means players using different platforms can join the same multiplayer game. For example, a supported game might let someone on a console enter a match with a friend on PC. Whether that is possible depends on the title and the particular platform combination.

Two related features are easy to confuse with cross-play:
- Cross-progression lets a player carry game progress between platforms. A game can support it without letting players from those platforms share a lobby.
- Cross-purchase lets a purchase made on one platform be available on another, where the game offers that arrangement. It is also separate from cross-play.
These capabilities can be offered together, but none guarantees the others.

How Epic’s route to Fortnite cross-play unfolded
2017: Paragon provided a smaller test environment
Epic says its PC- and PS4-supported game Paragon gave the company a smaller live setting to test cross-platform matchmaking, authentication and progression. Epic also described monitoring for problems such as slow matchmaking and security flaws. This gave the company experience with work that would become more visible at Fortnite’s scale. March 2018: Xbox One joined Fortnite’s cross-play announcement
On March 10, 2018, Epic announced Fortnite cross-play, cross-progression and cross-purchase between Xbox One, PC, Mac and iOS, with Android planned for the following months. Epic said the feature was opt-in. The announcement described a rollout plan; it should not be read as proof that every listed combination was already available that day. September 2018: PlayStation opened a Fortnite beta
On September 26, 2018, Sony announced an open beta for Fortnite gameplay, progression and commerce across PS4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows and Mac. The statement, signed by John Kodera, then SIE Deputy President, said: “Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.” Sony described the decision as a significant policy change after weighing user experience, technical and social considerations, and business mechanics. Epic later identified Sony’s move as the point when Fortnite achieved full cross-play across mobile, PC and major consoles. It was not a declaration that every PlayStation game—or every game on any platform—would support cross-play.

2019 onward: Epic built party infrastructure for scale
Epic says Fortnite initially used an XMPP-based approach for parties, then developed its own Party Service as security and scale needs grew. The service, created in 2019, supported parties of up to 16 players, according to Epic’s retrospective. That is a reported system capacity, not a player or audience count. The service addressed issues including security, client authority and persistence, and integrated console APIs for invites and native friend lists. Epic’s retrospective on Fortnite party systems
2023–2025: Tools and examples broadened
In August 2023, Epic said its cross-play overlay was expanding from PC to initial support for Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. Epic described the overlay as handling authentication, combined friend lists, invitations and joinability while aiming to meet each platform’s native requirements. The company said its account ecosystem then included more than 750 million Epic Games accounts; that company-reported figure is not a count of active players or cross-play users. In an overview dated July 14, 2025, Epic named Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League as first-party cross-play titles and listed PS4/PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, PC and mobile as platform examples. This is Epic’s dated overview, not an independently verified or exhaustive list of supported combinations. Epic Online Services’ cross-play overview
How cross-play works between console and PC
Putting different platforms into one matchmaking pool is only part of the job. A usable cross-platform lobby also needs systems that let the game recognize players, connect them socially and keep a party together.

- Identity: The game needs a way to recognize a player across devices. Linking a platform account to the game’s own account can connect those identities.
- Friends and invitations: Players need to find friends and invite them even when each platform has its own network and friend list.
- Parties and presence: The game has to maintain shared party membership and show whether friends are available or joinable.
- Platform requirements: Console platforms provide their own APIs and native social features, which a game must work with when implementing invites and friend lists.
- Matchmaking: Once players can form a party, the game must place that group into a compatible match. The supported pool can still vary by title, mode or platform.
Epic’s Don Eubanks, a lead UI programmer, described one obstacle this way: “Console parties tend to be game agnostic, offer only voice chat and exclude other console, computer or mobile users from participating.” Cross-platform parties therefore needed more than a shared game server: they had to connect people across social systems that were not built to include one another.

Yes, when a particular game supports that combination. Fortnite’s 2018 beta was a prominent example of PlayStation joining play across Xbox, PC, mobile and Nintendo Switch. But cross-play is implemented game by game; a platform’s participation in one title does not mean it shares lobbies in every other title.
Before planning a session, check the game’s current support information for the exact platforms, game mode and region involved. Also check whether cross-play must be enabled, whether accounts need linking, and how that game handles friends and party invitations. The available information does not establish current settings for every title or mode.

Sony’s public statement in September 2018 did not describe the decision as a technical impossibility. It said Sony had evaluated technical, social and business considerations before identifying a path to support cross-platform features for select third-party content. The Fortnite beta was a policy shift for supported content, not a blanket promise to enable cross-play in every game.
The distinction matters: developers have to build and maintain compatible identity, party and matchmaking systems, while platform holders set requirements for how their networks and features are used. A game may therefore support some combinations and not others, even after cross-play becomes technically possible.
Quick Recap
What to check before choosing a cross-platform game
- Which specific platform combinations are supported—not just whether the game advertises cross-play.
- Whether cross-play is opt-in, configurable or required for a particular mode.
- Whether linking an account is necessary to connect friends across platforms.
- Whether cross-progression is available if you want your progress to follow you between devices.
- How cross-platform friends, parties and invitations work, including any platform-specific limits.
- Whether the rules differ by game mode or region, and whether the game’s support page reflects the current version.
