Valve has publicly confirmed that CS2 can detect certain forms of input automation on official servers, but it has not disclosed a detailed system that identifies players from their mouse movements or key presses. Those are different ideas: enforcing rules against automated input is not the same as building a behavioral fingerprint to recognize a person. Independent research reports that mouse and keyboard patterns can distinguish players in recorded demos, but it does not show that Valve uses that method.
What “detecting input patterns” can mean
The phrase covers several distinct anti-cheat mechanisms. A system might look for known cheat software, restrict programs from interacting with a game, detect prohibited automation, or analyze gameplay records for patterns. A separate research use is comparing those patterns to recognize a player across demos. Evidence for one mechanism does not establish the others.

| Mechanism | What is observed | What it may establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| VAC signature detection | Known cheat signatures on a user’s computer, according to Valve’s public description | The presence of a recognized cheat | That VAC classifies raw mouse trajectories or identifies a player by input style |
| Trusted Mode | Third-party files attempting to interact with the CS2 game process | Whether software interaction is permitted under the mode | A behavioral identity match between players |
| Input-automation enforcement | Certain movement or shooting automation, including hardware-assisted counter-strafing | A rule violation that may lead to a match kick on Valve official servers | That Valve has published the detector’s features, thresholds, or accuracy |
| Demo-based behavioral research | Recorded mouse-look and button-press signals across demos | Similarity between player fingerprints in the research dataset | That the person cheated, or that Valve uses the method in production |
This comparison is useful because the mechanisms observe different things and can lead to different decisions. A known software signature concerns software on a computer; Trusted Mode concerns interaction with the game process; Valve’s automation announcement concerns particular inputs and a possible match kick; and the thesis concerns similarity between records. A research classification or account-linking inference is not automatically a game-enforcement action.
What Valve says its systems do
VAC: detecting known cheat signatures
Steam Support describes Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) as an automated system designed to detect cheats installed on a user’s computer. Valve says VAC reliably detects cheats using their signatures. That is a public, high-level description; it is not a complete account of the current implementation. In particular, it does not say that VAC reads every keystroke or classifies a player’s ordinary mouse movement as a biometric identity.

Valve’s VAC FAQ explains the signature-based description. The limits of that description matter: not seeing a detailed behavioral classifier in the public explanation is not proof that no other detection exists, but it is also not a basis for claiming that such a classifier is used.
Trusted Mode: restricting software interaction
CS2 Trusted Mode is enabled by default, according to Valve’s support documentation. It blocks third-party files from interacting with the game, including software that would normally inject into the game process. This is a process-integrity restriction: it concerns how software interacts with the game, rather than how distinctive a human’s aim or key presses appear.
Valve’s Trusted Mode guidance describes the restriction and the software-injection context. It does not describe a system that links accounts by mouse or keyboard style.
Input automation: a stated rule and match-kick consequence
In its August 19, 2024 CS2 release notes, Valve said: “Certain types of movement/shooting input automation such as hardware-assisted counter strafing will now be detected on Valve official servers, resulting in a kick from the match.” The same notes said input binds containing more than one of a listed set of commands would be ignored by default. Valve did not publish the detector’s exact input features, thresholds, or model in that announcement.
The practical distinction is that Valve publicly announced enforcement against certain automation, not a general rule that unusual but human input is punishable. The announced consequence is a kick from the match. The release notes do not establish that an automation detection is the same as a VAC ban or an account-identity match.
The announcement is also narrower than a description of a general-purpose “keyboard and mouse AI.” It names types of movement or shooting automation and gives hardware-assisted counter-strafing as an example, but does not explain how the system distinguishes an automated input from other input, what signals it checks, or what threshold it uses. Those details are not publicly specified in the cited notes, so claims about exact timing windows, device identification, or a particular classifier would go beyond the available evidence.

VacNet 3.0: limited testing announced
The August 19, 2024 notes also stated: “Initial testing of VacNet 3.0 has begun on a limited set of matches.” Valve did not describe its architecture, mouse or keyboard features, thresholds, or accuracy there. The announcement supports saying limited testing had begun at that time; it does not support assigning a particular behavioral-biometric capability or a live-system success rate to VacNet 3.0.

That date matters: it is a statement about the start of initial testing in a limited set of matches, not a promise about current coverage or a published measure of performance. Nor does the proximity of the automation notice and the VacNet 3.0 note establish that one is the other. The public release notes do not say that VacNet 3.0 uses the thesis’s fingerprinting method.
How demo-based mouse and keyboard fingerprinting works
A master’s student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, posting under the name u/Magga_, described a project that extracts separate mouse and keyboard signals from existing CS2 demos. The author’s summary says demos record, tick by tick, where players looked and which buttons they pressed. By condensing those signals into player fingerprints and comparing them across demos, the project attempts to determine whether two records resemble the same player.
The author says the method uses existing demos and requires no client change, new telemetry, or kernel driver. That is the thesis author’s account of an independent research method, not Valve documentation. It also illustrates why “input patterns” can refer to identity matching rather than cheat detection: the method asks whether accounts or demos may belong to the same person, not whether a cheat was installed or used.
In plain language, the research question is whether a person’s way of moving the mouse and pressing keys is consistent and distinctive enough to recognize them in another demo. The claim is about matching behavioral records, not recognizing a person’s real-world identity, and it should not be reframed as confirmation that CS2 currently identifies every player this way. The thesis author describes analyzing already-recorded demos, rather than requiring a new client modification or kernel driver for that research method.

The thesis author reports results from a dataset of more than 1,000 players: mouse signals identified the correct player in 100% of the tested cases, while keyboard signals did so in 98%. The author also reports a 0.11 correlation between how similar stranger pairs appeared on mouse and keyboard signals, suggesting those signals could provide complementary information. These figures are the author’s reported results on that dataset, not independently established accuracy rates for all CS2 players or for a deployed anti-cheat system.

The low reported correlation between stranger-pair similarity is relevant to the author’s argument that mouse and keyboard features may offer different information. It does not mean that the two signals combine into a known production accuracy, or that a live system can make an equally reliable decision across a much larger population. The reported 100% and 98% describe the tested dataset and task only.
In a summary of the project, Tom’s Hardware reported the author’s caveat that the dataset is thin for representing CS2’s full player population. The author also identifies shared accounts as a limitation: if multiple people use one account, account records and a person’s input fingerprint need not map neatly to one another.
Identity matching is not proof of cheating
The thesis author’s stated application includes linking accounts believed to belong to the same person, such as accounts used as smurfs or after a ban. Even a reliable match would be an identity-linking result, not evidence by itself that the matched person cheated. Whether linked accounts should face a penalty, and whether that penalty should expire, are policy decisions separate from the technical act of comparing signals. A fingerprint match does not by itself prove a cheat violation or guarantee that a ban follows someone across accounts.

This is an important boundary for readers: identifying two records as similar answers a different question from deciding whether a player broke a rule. Shared accounts make the distinction particularly clear, because one account may represent more than one person’s input. Conversely, even a strong similarity result in a research dataset does not settle what evidence or policy should be required before an account is penalized.
What other research says about behavior-based detection
Detectors face adaptive behavior
Witschel and Wressnegger’s 2020 paper, “Aim Low, Shoot High: Evading Aimbot Detectors by Mimicking User Behavior,” studied an adaptive aimbot designed to imitate human behavior gradually. The evaluation included two professional CS:GO players, two open-source anti-cheat systems, and the commercial combination of VAC, VACnet, and Overwatch. Its relevance is that a detector based on behavior can face adversaries who try to make automated play look more human. It is not a performance measurement of today’s CS2 systems: it used a specific experiment and older game and detector context.
The study therefore supports a general caution about interpreting behavioral signals: a pattern that looks useful in one experiment does not guarantee an unchanging boundary between human and automated play. The paper is not evidence that every human-like input is suspicious, that the experiment defeated current CS2 protections, or that its results measure the present-day performance of Valve’s systems.

Experimental model scores are not VAC or VacNet scores
A 2025 preprint called AntiCheatPT describes a transformer model trained on gameplay-derived data from 795 matches. Its authors report 89.17% test accuracy and a 93.36% area under the curve (AUC) on their test set. Those are results for the authors’ model and data, not published accuracy figures for VAC, VacNet, or any live commercial service. The paper notes that closed commercial systems and limited availability of labeled data constrain reproducible anti-cheat research.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What players can reasonably conclude
- Some automation is explicitly prohibited. Valve announced detection and match kicks for certain movement or shooting automation on official servers, and default restrictions on binds containing multiple listed commands.
- Public documentation does not reveal a mouse-and-keyboard identity classifier in VAC. Valve’s public VAC description concerns known cheat signatures; Trusted Mode concerns third-party interaction with the game process.
- Input traces can support research into player identity. An independent thesis reports promising results on its own dataset, but those figures should not be treated as production accuracy or population-wide proof.
- Similarity is not guilt. A system that links two demos or accounts would be making an identity inference. That inference alone does not establish cheating.
- Live-system details remain undisclosed in the cited public materials. Valve has not specified the exact mouse or keyboard features, model architecture, thresholds, or accuracy for the automation detection or VacNet 3.0 testing described above.
Why developer ban documentation is a separate matter
Valve’s Steamworks developer documentation says cheat detection is performed by the game developer or its agents and reported through ICheatReportingService. That documentation explains an integration path for game bans; it is not a technical description of CS2’s internal anti-cheat or evidence of any particular mouse-and-keyboard classifier.
Frequently asked questions
Can CS2 tell who I am from how I move my mouse and press keys?
An independent thesis author reports a method for matching player fingerprints across CS2 demos using mouse and keyboard signals. That is not confirmation that Valve uses the method or that CS2 identifies players this way in production. Valve’s reviewed public materials do not describe a mouse-and-keyboard identity classifier.
Does VAC read every keystroke or identify players by their aim?
Valve publicly describes VAC as detecting known cheats using signatures. That description does not say VAC reads every keystroke or identifies players by input style. It also is not a complete disclosure of every current anti-cheat mechanism, so the careful conclusion is that the reviewed public documentation does not establish such a capability.

Does a player fingerprint prove cheating or guarantee a ban?
No. A fingerprint comparison is an identity-similarity inference. By itself, it does not show that a cheat was installed or used, and the thesis author’s research does not establish that Valve links accounts or imposes penalties using that method. Any penalty policy is separate from the matching technique.
Are the thesis and AntiCheatPT accuracy numbers Valve’s accuracy?
No. The thesis author reports 100% mouse identification and 98% keyboard identification in a dataset of more than 1,000 players, while AntiCheatPT authors report 89.17% test accuracy and 93.36% AUC on data from 795 matches. These are independent research results on their respective datasets, not disclosed VAC or VacNet performance figures.

Valve has publicly confirmed detection of certain input automation and announced limited VacNet 3.0 testing, but it has not published detailed mouse-and-keyboard features, thresholds, or accuracy. Independent research suggests recorded input signals may help distinguish players across demos; that is not proof Valve uses the approach, and an identity match is not proof of cheating.
