That is the argument advanced by Dr. Xi Zeng, Founder and CEO of Chance AI, in a TechRadar Pro Perspectives article published on 18 August 2026. It is a strategic thesis, not a measured forecast or established industry consensus.
Why AI changes the camera’s job
A conventional camera pipeline is often judged by the image a person sees: color, sharpness, exposure and pleasing processing. A camera feeding a live AI system has another potential goal: preserve enough useful information for the model to understand what is happening and help the user in time to act.

Zeng’s argument starts with the constraints of real-time inference. A system answering while someone points a device at a scene must work within limits such as latency, power and heat. The model can only interpret the signal delivered by the sensor and the processing that follows it. If motion blur, glare or a particular image-processing choice obscures a relevant detail, a larger downstream model cannot necessarily recover it. The article offers no benchmark quantifying that effect, and it does not establish that image processing generally harms machine vision.
Zeng illustrates the shift with a personal anecdote: visitors who used a phone-based helper at an art exhibition later used it to identify unrelated everyday objects. He reads that behavior as an emerging expectation that a camera can explain what it sees. It is an anecdote, not a representative survey or user study.

- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
What camera designs could prioritize
For machine perception, the useful output may not be the most attractive photograph. A system may need reliable edges, structure and visual information in difficult conditions so that software can interpret the scene. That is Zeng’s framing of a possible design target, not a universal rule for sensors or image pipelines.
The article names several hardware approaches that could contribute to this direction. It does not identify products, compare implementations, or report performance results.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
- On-chip processing: processing data before it leaves the pixel array could change what information is passed along and where computation occurs.
- Event-based sensing: event-based, or neuromorphic, sensors register changes in a scene rather than relying only on conventional image capture.
- Global shutters: a global shutter is presented as an approach to reducing motion artifacts.
- Machine-readable high dynamic range: high-dynamic-range capture could be tuned to preserve useful signal for machine interpretation.
These are categories Zeng points to, not evidence that one approach is best. Any real implementation would need to be assessed against the task, scene conditions, processing location, latency, power and heat constraints.

Why the camera race extends beyond the sensor
A sensor alone does not determine whether a camera-based AI product is useful. Zeng describes a stack that includes the sensor, image pipeline, edge compute, model orchestration and the action taken after the system produces an answer. A clear signal can still lead to a poor experience if the model or the rest of the product cannot interpret it promptly or connect the result to what the user needs.

As Zeng puts it: “The next camera race will run across the entire stack: the sensor, the image pipeline, the edge compute, the model orchestration, and what the system does with an answer.” The claim is about the scope of the design challenge, not a comparison of particular companies or systems.

In Zeng’s view, a camera AI product should do more than name what is in front of it. Recognizing a menu could help someone make a food decision; reading an event poster could lead to saving the event to a calendar. The practical value lies in connecting visual understanding to an appropriate next step.

That does not mean every camera should take action automatically. It means the product must be designed around the user’s task: what information matters, what response is useful, and how much control the user should retain. A label or description may be enough in one situation; another may call for a follow-up action.

What the argument establishes—and what it does not
Zeng’s article offers a way to think about camera design as AI systems become more involved in interpreting live scenes. It identifies potential priorities and hardware categories, but supplies no named statistics, benchmarks, product specifications, costs or comparisons. It therefore cannot show that a particular sensor type outperforms another, that the industry has adopted this strategy, or that a specific product is available or suitable.
The useful takeaway is a change in the question designers might ask. Alongside “Does this image look good?”, they may ask “Does the system receive the right signal, understand the scene quickly, and help the user do something worthwhile?” Zeng summarizes the shift this way: “The sensor is turning into an instrument of perception, and photography is becoming only one of the things it is for.”
