Rank 1 is the answer; a smaller rank means a closer position. The number is not a spelling score or a percentage, and the game’s exact model and calculation have not been verified in publicly readable primary material.
What does a Contexto rank mean?
Your rank is the guess’s position relative to the hidden answer in an ordering based on semantic proximity. A guess ranked 1 is the answer. A guess ranked 20 is closer in that ordering than one ranked 2,000, but the ranks do not tell you how much closer it is.

Think of rank as an ordered clue, not a measurement on a linear scale. A drop of a few hundred places does not correspond to a fixed amount of progress, and no verified percentage interpretation is available for the original game.
How can words be close without being synonyms?
In a common approach to word similarity, a model represents words as numerical vectors derived from patterns in language use. Words that tend to appear in similar contexts can end up near each other, even if they are not synonyms or do not share a definition. A game can use that ordering to return a rank as feedback.
#1 Best Overall
This is a general explanation of embedding-based ranking, not a verified description of the exact system at contexto.me. The game’s publicly readable primary materials do not establish its model, vocabulary, or precise similarity calculation.
Why can a close result seem surprising?
Similarity based on language use can reflect shared contexts rather than strict meaning. For example, opposite words may occur in similar kinds of sentences; an embedding-based system can therefore associate them. That is a general limitation of distributional similarity, documented in the editorial policy of the independent site contexto.us.com, and should not be treated as a measured behavior of the original game.
Rank #2
A close rank consequently does not prove that two words mean the same thing. It tells you where a guess sits in the game’s ordering, which may capture associations that are less obvious than synonyms.

What is known about Contexto’s implementation?
A third-party solver reports an API endpoint at api.contexto.me/machado/en/game/{game_id}/{word} and says the response includes a distance value used to derive the displayed rank. The solver also cautions that its own GloVe model does not perfectly match the game’s internal embedding dataset. This is evidence of an API-based rank response, not proof of the original game’s model or exact metric. Third-party solver
Rank #3
Be careful with technical details published by sites that use the Contexto name. The site contexto.us.com says its game is independent and unaffiliated with contexto.me. It describes its own 70,000-word vocabulary and, in a separate editorial policy, a precomputed ranking based on a publicly available 300-dimensional embedding model. Those specifications apply to that independent game, not necessarily to contexto.me. contexto.us.com Its editorial policy
Another independent site, contextogame.online, describes a 99,949-word table of 50-dimensional GloVe vectors and cosine similarity. Its account differs from contexto.us.com’s, and neither establishes the original game’s configuration. contextogame.online
For contexto.me, the exact embedding model, vocabulary size, and similarity calculation remain unverified. It would be misleading to assign it the vocabulary or model specifications of either independent namesake.

How to use the ranks while playing
- Prioritize direction, not the size of a jump. A lower rank means a closer position in the ordering, but the distance between ranks is not a calibrated measure.
- Explore associations as well as synonyms. Because semantic similarity can reflect shared usage contexts, related topics or settings may be useful avenues when a direct synonym does not improve the rank.
- Do not assume an outside model will reproduce the game. The third-party solver notes that its GloVe model does not perfectly align with Contexto’s internal dataset.
