For fragile ancient silk, conservators may use a fine support fabric such as silk crepeline to stabilize a tear or exposed area. The patch may be stitched or, in some specialist treatments, attached with conservation adhesive. There is no universal filler: the right material and method depend on the textile’s condition and whether the goal is to support it, visually compensate for a loss, or both.
What “filler” means in textile conservation
A patch does not necessarily plug a hole or make missing silk disappear. It can sit beneath or over fragile fabric to reduce movement and help prevent further damage. Conservators may also use a support to visually compensate for a loss, but that adds requirements for color, sheen, and texture as well as physical support. The AIC Textile Conservation Catalog guidance excerpt distinguishes localized support, such as a patch or fill, from overall support, such as a backing or lining: Fabrics Used for Stabilization.

Materials conservators may consider
Silk crepeline
Fine silk crepeline is a sheer fabric documented in museum treatments as an overlay or patch material. Its translucency can let the original textile remain visible, and it may be custom dyed to better suit the object. In a Chicago History Museum gown treatment, a conservator selected crepeline to match the lining’s color, sheerness, and weight, then pinned and stitched the overlay in place: The Chemistry of Conservation.

The AIC guidance excerpt also names nylon net and polyester Tetex/Stabiltex as possible sheer overlay fabrics when translucency matters. The material should provide enough support without interacting poorly with the original. Conservators consider weight and texture, including whether the support fabric creates too much or too little friction. A support is often the same weight as or lighter than the original, though a heavier one may be needed for a weak ground fabric carrying heavy embellishment.

How patches can be attached
Stitching
Stitching is one documented way to attach a support. In the Chicago History Museum example, the conservator pinned the custom-dyed overlay and stitched it in place. The V&A also describes silk patches stitched where the textile remained strong, with couching stitches used to support damaged areas: Guest Post: Conservation Close-up.
Conservation adhesive
The Cincinnati Art Museum describes a specialist method in which fine silk crepeline is impregnated with dilute conservation adhesive, dried, cut to shape, and reactivated with heat or solvent. The museum says these patches were applied “usually on the inside”: Behind the Scenes in Conservation: Patch It Up!. This is a description of a conservation technique, not a recipe for household glue or a do-it-yourself repair.

Support does not always mean filling the whole gap
A treatment can stabilize vulnerable edges while leaving a loss visibly open. In its account of an ancient Egyptian sock, National Museums Scotland describes using custom-dyed, semi-transparent crepeline to support the exposed toe. At the top of the sock, conservators chose a flexible Melinex strip rather than filling the shape completely: The lost sock: An ancient Egyptian textile. The example shows why a repair plan should respond to the object’s needs rather than aim automatically to recreate missing material.

The examples establish that conservators have used crepeline, stitching, and conservation adhesives in particular treatments. They do not establish a safe universal method for an unidentified piece of ancient silk. Its condition, weave, dyes, earlier repairs, and intended display or use can affect what support and attachment are appropriate. A treatment may also involve examination, testing, removing old repairs, and mounting, as the Cairo silk-treatment case summary indicates: A new approach for conservation treatment of a silk textile in Islamic Art Museum, Cairo.

If the object may be ancient or historically significant, avoid applying adhesive, dye, or stitches based on a general online example. A textile conservator should examine it before a specific intervention is chosen.
