Yes. In a 2020 experiment, researchers diffracted beams of ciprofloxacin and phthalocyanine as matter waves using a thick standing-light grating. The result was a way to coherently redirect complex molecules—not an X-ray or electron method for determining crystal structures.
What does Bragg diffraction mean for a molecule?
A molecule has wave-like behavior as well as particle-like properties. In this experiment, the molecules traveled through a standing pattern of light that acted as an optical grating. The grating coherently changed their momentum, producing a dominant outgoing diffraction beam.

That is a different use of “Bragg diffraction” from crystallography. In crystallography, researchers analyze how X-rays, neutrons, or electrons scatter from the periodic arrangement of atoms in a crystal to learn about its structure. Brand and coauthors instead used a light grating to manipulate a beam of free-flying molecules.
How did the experiment work?
A standing-light grating
The team retro-reflected a 532 nm laser beam to create a thick optical grating. A molecular beam passed through this grating in a vacuum apparatus. The resulting diffraction pattern included a dominant diffracted beam; its direction changed with the angle at which the grating met the incoming beam.

Two complex organic molecules
The experiment demonstrated diffraction with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin and the dye phthalocyanine. The authors report that these molecules were highly rotationally excited, with more than 100 vibrational degrees of freedom thermalized at 700–1000 K. This makes the result notable as a demonstration involving hot, internally complex molecules, rather than a claim about every large molecule.
What did the molecule diffraction results show?
The paper reports two distinct momentum outcomes. In the paper’s photon-momentum units, an equal-amplitude split separated the two output beams by 14 ℏk; the maximum reported momentum transfer was 18 ℏk. These are not interchangeable figures: the first describes a balanced split, while the second is the largest momentum transfer reported.

The measured population also oscillated between the diffracted and undiffracted beams. Together with the angle-dependent direction of the diffracted beam, this showed control over how molecules were coherently redirected by the grating.
How is this different from Raman–Nath diffraction?
The distinction in the paper is chiefly the grating regime and the resulting beam pattern. A thick grating in the Bragg regime can direct population into a dominant order, a useful feature for a beam splitter or mirror. The thin-grating Raman–Nath regime produces several diffraction orders arranged symmetrically around the incoming beam.

Does this mean researchers built a molecular interferometer?
No. The experiment demonstrated a molecular diffraction element, including a balanced beam split and substantial momentum transfer. The authors describe this as a step toward efficient beam splitters and mirrors for hot, complex molecules; the reported result does not itself establish a complete molecular interferometer or a precision-measurement device.
The authors also suggest the technique may work without modification for molecules of comparable size and absorption cross section. That is a proposed extension of their findings, not a demonstration with every molecule meeting those descriptions.

Which experiment is this, and when was it published?
The result is reported by Christian Brand and coauthors in “Bragg Diffraction of Large Organic Molecules,” published in Physical Review Letters 125, 033604, on 16 July 2020. Its significance is specific: it demonstrated coherent Bragg diffraction of two named complex organic molecules using a thick optical grating.
