How Companion Approval and Loyalty Systems Work in RPGs

RPG companion systems vary: approval can shape dialogue, romance stages, or party outcomes, but loyalty and commitment may be separate states.

Companion approval systems track how a character responds to the player; loyalty, friendship, and romance may be separate relationship states rather than different names for the same score. Their effects are specific to each game: approval might unlock a conversation, while a particular game may make a strained relationship affect party membership. To understand what a system actually does, look at what changes it, what it unlocks, and whether disagreement can be repaired—not just whether the game displays a meter.

What companion approval measures

In an RPG with an approval system, the game keeps track of a companion’s stance toward the player or the player character. That state can respond to decisions, conversations, or other actions, then influence what the companion says or what relationship content becomes available. It is a design tool for making companions seem responsive to the player’s conduct and for connecting their personalities to the wider story.

There is no single approval system shared by RPGs. A game might represent a relationship internally as a number, show a category or icon, or communicate changes through dialogue without giving the player a precise score. The interface—and the meaning of the state behind it—must be checked game by game. A familiar-looking meter does not establish that two games use the same rules.

Approval is also not automatically the same as loyalty, friendship, or romance. Approval describes a companion’s reaction or attitude as modeled by that game. Loyalty may refer to a distinct narrative commitment or personal quest, while friendship and romance can be separate relationship statuses or story paths. Unless a game explicitly treats these as one variable, it is more accurate to ask which state is changing and what that state controls.

How player actions feed into a relationship

Choices can express values, not just pick a favored answer

Companions can judge a decision according to their own outlook. A 2014 GDC narrative review of Dragon Age: Origins describes Morrigan disapproving of charitable actions because she believes in survival of the fittest, while Wynne approves of charity. The point is not that one response is the “correct” choice for the party; the characters’ different beliefs give the same action different relationship meanings.

This makes approval more than a hidden quiz in which the player must discover the universally right answer. A choice may please one companion and alienate another because their priorities differ. The reaction helps characterize them, and the resulting tension can make a party feel like a group of people rather than a set of interchangeable quest rewards.

Relationships can react to more than conversation menus

Larian’s official Baldur’s Gate 3 community update describes relationship inputs across combat, exploration, and conversation. It also points to companions’ opinions of one another and of factions, and to camp conversations that respond to events from the day. In this design, a relationship can reflect a pattern of play and the party’s changing circumstances, rather than only a single selected line of dialogue.

EA’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard guide names a different set of relationship-building actions: flirting, taking a companion on quests, siding with them, and giving gifts. Those examples show why a player should not assume that every game’s approval changes only when a dialogue prompt appears. The relevant inputs are whatever the particular game chooses to treat as meaningful.

Gifts can carry story meaning—or reduce a relationship to points

A gift can be a character-specific gesture that opens a distinctive conversation, or it can function mainly as a way to raise a generic relationship value. The GDC review of Dragon Age: Origins discusses both possibilities and critiques generic gifts that increase approval without much narrative significance: repeated point gains can flatten the sense that a relationship is about knowing a person.

That distinction is useful when interpreting a gift system. Ask whether the item reflects the companion’s story or preferences, whether it prompts a unique response, and whether it merely moves a meter. A system can use both kinds of feedback, but the gift’s presence alone does not tell you which design is at work.

How an approval value can affect the game

A relationship value matters when game logic uses it to change what the player can experience. The official Baldur’s Gate 3 modding reference documents an approval-rating query that returns an integer between a rating owner—typically a companion—and a rated character—typically the player. Its example checks whether approval is above 30 before attempting a camp relationship dialogue. A companion-specific event reference also describes an approval-change event that reports the new total.

These are concrete examples of a numeric state and a threshold check. They do not establish that every companion conversation uses that threshold, explain every part of the game’s relationship implementation, or show that other RPGs use comparable numbers. Treat the value as a game-specific condition, not a genre-wide scale or a universal measure of affection.

Consequences can be minor or substantial. A threshold may make a scene available; a relationship stage may change what romance content is possible; in a particular game, a sufficiently damaged relationship may affect party membership. The GDC review says that in Dragon Age: Origins, approval that falls too low and cannot be repaired may cause a companion to leave for the rest of the game. That is a historical, game-specific consequence—not a general rule for RPG companions.

Approval, loyalty, friendship, and romance are not interchangeable

One reason relationship systems are easy to misread is that several story ideas can appear together. A companion may approve of the player’s conduct, trust them with a personal story, remain loyal to a group, become a friend, or enter a romance. A game might connect some of these states, but the connection is a design choice. A favorable reaction does not by itself prove that a romance has begun, and completing a personal quest does not by itself prove that the game has set a separate loyalty flag.

The Veilguard guide makes the distinction especially clear for romance. It describes a romanced status that is not yet permanent: a companion can later ask the player to commit. Declining returns the status to Friend or Ally, while commitment prevents romance with other companions. That is a staged relationship with a decision point, not simply a high approval score that automatically means the relationship is settled.

Larian’s developer-authored Baldur’s Gate 3 relationship post says, “No two relationships follow the same formula.” The developer also describes its intent to let players challenge and argue with a partner rather than treating sex as a reward for complying with a companion quest. These statements describe the studio’s intended design framing; they are not a promise that every player will interpret every interaction the same way. They do underline why approval should not be treated as a universal obedience meter.

What the examples show—and what they do not

Game or source What is documented What the example helps explain
Baldur’s Gate 3: official modding reference An integer approval query between characters; an example checks whether approval is above 30 before attempting a camp relationship dialogue. An approval-change event reports the new total. Approval can be a numeric state used as a gate. The example does not establish one threshold for all scenes or games.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Larian community and developer posts Relationships can respond to combat, exploration, conversation, factions, camp events, and party dynamics. Larian says relationship arcs differ and can change. Inputs and relationship arcs can be broader and more individual than a single dialogue meter.
Dragon Age: Origins: 2014 GDC narrative review Morrigan and Wynne react differently to charity according to their beliefs; the review says very low, unrepaired approval may lead a companion to leave. Approval can express character values, and a specific game may attach a major consequence to it.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard: EA guide Flirting, quests, siding with a companion, and gifts can build a bond; romance has a later commitment choice and visible relationship-status icons. Relationship development can have explicit stages and rules distinct from simply gaining approval.

These examples illuminate different mechanics; they are not a survey of all RPGs. They do not establish how common companion approval is across the genre, which interface style is typical, or whether a system is hidden or visible in every title. Compare specific documented rules rather than extrapolating a standard from a few well-known games.

How to read a companion system while playing

  1. Identify what the game actually displays. Note whether it shows a number, a status label, an icon, a dialogue reaction, or no explicit indicator. Do not infer a precise score from a warm response unless the game provides one.
  2. Watch for the companion’s stated priorities. If characters disagree about an action, their reaction may reflect beliefs or personality rather than a hidden universal morality test. The Morrigan-and-Wynne charity example illustrates how the same choice can produce opposing responses.
  3. Notice which activities trigger feedback. Pay attention to conversations as well as quests, combat, exploration, faction decisions, gifts, and camp scenes where the game supports them. A quiet reaction may be part of a broader relationship state even if the player cannot see the score.
  4. Separate the state from its consequence. Ask whether a change unlocks dialogue, advances a relationship stage, alters romance eligibility, or affects party membership. Those outcomes are different; a change in one does not prove that all the others have changed too.
  5. Look for explicit commitment or lock-in choices. If a game presents a commitment decision, read what it says about other paths before choosing. In The Veilguard, commitment blocks romance with other companions; this is a documented rule for that game, not a general feature of RPG romance.
  6. Check whether the game allows repair before assuming a relationship is lost. Some systems may permit recovery, while the cited Dragon Age: Origins review describes a low-approval departure when approval cannot be repaired. Do not assume either recoverability or permanence without game-specific evidence.

Why designers use these systems

Approval gives a game a way to connect character writing to player behavior. If a companion reacts to a decision in a way that fits their beliefs, the player learns something about that character while seeing a consequence of the choice. If the reaction affects later dialogue or a relationship scene, it can also make earlier decisions feel continuous with later story moments.

Systems that react across multiple activities can make the party’s social world feel more present. A companion who comments on a faction decision or the day’s events at camp appears to have a perspective beyond the current conversation. By contrast, a system that rewards every favorable action with the same kind of point increase may be legible but can make the relationship feel transactional. The GDC review’s criticism of generic gifts captures that design trade-off: easy-to-read progress is not necessarily the same as meaningful characterization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also a trade-off between clarity and surprise. A visible status icon can tell the player that a relationship has moved into a new stage, while a hidden number can leave reactions more organic but make consequences harder to predict. The cited materials establish internal numeric approval in Baldur’s Gate 3 and visible relationship-status icons in EA’s The Veilguard guide; they do not provide a complete comparison of interface designs across RPGs. Neither approach is inherently the rule for the genre.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • “Approval is the same thing as loyalty.” Not necessarily. Use the game’s own terms and determine whether loyalty is a separate state, quest outcome, or simply a description of the relationship.
  • “A high score guarantees romance.” A game can require additional choices or a later commitment step. The Veilguard explicitly separates a romanced status from commitment.
  • “Disagreement means the relationship is failing.” A companion’s disagreement may express a coherent perspective. Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 relationships as capable of argument and challenge; that does not make every conflict consequence-free, but it cautions against reading all disagreement as a failed romance path.
  • “Every game uses the same threshold logic.” The above-30 check is an example in Baldur’s Gate 3 modding documentation. It is not a genre standard.
  • “A gift is always a shortcut.” Gifts can prompt unique, character-specific conversation or act as generic approval increases. Their narrative role depends on the game.
  • “A companion will always leave if approval gets low.” The departure consequence belongs to the cited account of Dragon Age: Origins, and the review qualifies it with approval being too low and not repairable.

Ultimately, companion approval is best understood as one possible mechanism for translating a character’s perspective into game state. Loyalty, friendship, and romance may intersect with it, but the useful questions are specific: what actions does this companion notice, what relationship state changes, what does that state unlock or risk, and what choices remain available afterward?
