Its approach uses Adobe Experience Platform to bring customer data together and Adobe Journey Optimizer to coordinate messages across email, SMS, push notifications, and app and web placements. The performance figures are CFS-reported, not independently verified.
What changed in CFS’s marketing approach?
CFS describes a move away from sporadic, manually assembled campaigns toward always-on journeys that respond to member circumstances and behavior. Instead of waiting for a marketer to build each campaign from scratch, the organization uses shared customer data and standardized journey patterns to send relevant communications when a defined event occurs.

The goal is not simply to send more messages. CFS frames the change as reaching members near moments when information or a next step may be useful. Group executive for the Customer Office Richard Burns described the aim as responding “close to a moment of action.”

Which platform does Colonial First State use?
The case report names two Adobe products: Adobe Experience Platform for bringing customer data together and Adobe Journey Optimizer for orchestrating communications. Adobe’s Summit 2026 session listing also identifies those products in its account of CFS’s member-experience use case; it is vendor-authored and does not independently validate results.

The published account does not describe CFS’s integrations, data schemas, consent controls, or platform configuration, so the product names alone do not show how the underlying implementation works.
How do member events trigger engagement?
CFS uses email, SMS, push notifications, and personalized placements in its app and web channels. One example is a push notification when a member’s superannuation contribution reaches their account, similar in purpose to an alert that a salary payment has arrived.
“Near real time” is the report’s description of the desired responsiveness, not a stated technical latency guarantee. Burns says the aim is to act close to the member’s moment of action; no processing threshold or delivery-time measurement is published.

The reported use cases connect communications to tools and services CFS says may fit a member’s needs, including retirement calculators, its Super Health Check tool, member advice services, and Safewill estate-planning services. The case presents these as examples of relevant services to surface, not as a claim that every member receives every offer.

What results does CFS report?
In an October 5, 2026 report by Brad Howarth for iTnews, CFS says standard customer-journey deployment time fell from weeks to hours and campaign output doubled. The report does not provide measurement methods, baselines, a measurement window, or independent verification, so these should be read as company-reported operational outcomes rather than audited performance metrics.
The report also describes early personalized activity as improving engagement and customer action, including greater digital adoption through push communications that brought members into the app. It supplies no engagement rate, adoption figure, sample size, or evaluation method, so the size of that impact cannot be quantified from the published account.

Why governance matters in an always-on system
More automated journeys can increase the speed and volume of communications, but they also make clear data quality and accountability important. Burns says success depends on “data quality, governance, clear ownership, operational discipline, and effective ways of working.” That places operating responsibilities alongside the technology: teams need reliable inputs, ownership of journey decisions, and processes for monitoring what automation sends.

CFS also says it uses AI for insights, reducing repetitive work, and personalization while retaining human oversight of important decisions. Burns describes AI as augmenting capabilities, with governance and human decision-making maintained throughout processes. The report does not specify which decisions are automated or detail the controls used.

What the published case does not establish
- How many journeys were deployed or how many members were reached.
- When implementation began, what it cost, or its return on investment.
- Exact delivery latency, engagement-rate changes, or digital-adoption rates.
- A causal test design or independent audit of the reported outcomes.
The case is useful as an account of an operating shift—standardized journey production, shared data, event-triggered contact, and human accountability—not as a controlled comparison of marketing platforms or a quantified proof of business impact.
