Chewing coca leaves or steeping them as tea is not the same preparation or exposure as using cocaine powder or crack. Modern coca products also vary, and their existence does not establish that they are safe, effective, legal, or available where you live.
What is the difference between coca and cocaine?
Coca refers to leaves from coca plants. The leaves contain a mixture of plant compounds, including the alkaloid cocaine. Cocaine, in common usage, means the distinct drug extracted and processed from coca leaves; it can appear as powder or as cocaine base, commonly called crack. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) describes cocaine as derived from coca leaves and identifies these different forms in its cocaine fact sheet.

The amount of cocaine in coca leaves is variable, not a fixed dose. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that cultivated coca leaves contain between 0.11% and 1.02% cocaine by dried leaf weight across regions. That is a composition range, not a dose estimate or a prediction of effects for an individual. WHO also reports 0.5–2.4% total alkaloids, which includes compounds other than cocaine; total alkaloid content should not be confused with cocaine content.

| What it is | Plant leaves containing a mix of alkaloids and other compounds. | A distinct drug derived from coca leaves; may be powder or cocaine base (crack). |
| Routes described by WHO and DEA | Chewing dried leaves, sometimes with an alkaline substance, or infusing them as tea. | Snorting powder, injecting dissolved powder, or smoking crack. |
| Evidence and risks | Traditional users report mild stimulating or energizing effects. Evidence for proposed health benefits is limited, and effects depend on preparation and use. | An intense stimulant with strong addictive potential and potentially life-threatening cardiovascular and neurological harms. |
| Regulation | Internationally controlled, though national laws may allow specified traditional uses. | Separately controlled under international and national drug laws; local rules vary. |
WHO’s 2025 review discusses the variable composition of leaves and how absorption can depend on route, amount, the use of an alkaline substance, and—in the case of chewing—duration. Some findings draw on animal models, ethnographic accounts, or limited human research, so they do not establish the same effect for every preparation or person. Is coca tea the same as cocaine?
No. Coca tea is an infusion made from coca leaves; cocaine is a processed drug. The preparations and typical routes of use differ. WHO describes tea and leaf chewing as traditional practices, particularly in Andean regions. That distinction does not mean coca tea is cocaine-free, medically proven, or lawful in every country.
Traditional uses reported to WHO include seeking energy, preventing altitude sickness, and supporting digestive health. WHO says evidence for usefulness in altitude sickness is mixed and that clinical evidence for broader therapeutic claims is limited. These are reported traditional purposes, not established treatment advice.

What health risks are associated with cocaine?
The DEA describes cocaine as an intense stimulant with strong addictive potential. Its fact sheet lists possible harms including anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, ischemic heart conditions, sudden cardiac arrest, convulsions, stroke, and death. These are risks associated with cocaine use; they should not be transferred wholesale to customary coca-leaf chewing. Conversely, limited evidence about coca leaf does not establish that leaf use is risk-free.
What products are made from coca leaves?
WHO identifies coca teas, nutritional supplements, essential oil, and powdered leaf among preparations or marketed product categories. Finely ground leaf may also be infused. These categories do not verify any particular brand, seller, formulation, or market listing. WHO notes that coca leaf’s cocaine content limits its suitability as a nutritional supplement.

- Cacao Bliss (Loose Leaf) is made up of rich, organic cacao shells, the outer part of the cacao bean. This is a caffeine-free blend in general, but since chocolate and cacao alike contain very minor natural stimulants like theobromine, it is labeled as caffeinated from a FDA food labeling standpoint. When assessing a product label, distinguish whole leaf from processed leaf or an extract. The word “coca” alone does not mean that cocaine or other ecgonine alkaloids have been removed. WHO’s definition of coca leaf distinguishes it from leaves from which cocaine and other ecgonine alkaloids have been removed.

Coca leaf remains in Schedule I of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. After its 2025 critical review, WHO recommended retaining that status. In April 2026, WHO reported that the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs considered the recommendation and confirmed the existing framework without a vote, as no change had been proposed. WHO said permitted legitimate traditional uses under national legislation remain unaffected. Its update is available at WHO’s April 2026 update.
