A large codebase can make security review feel overwhelming: the challenge is not just finding suspicious code, but proving that an attacker can cross a real trust boundary and cause harm. Cloudflare’s open-source security-audit-skill gives coding agents a documented, staged process for investigating that question. It is an audit aid—not evidence that a codebase is secure or that the skill detects vulnerabilities at a measured rate.
What the security-audit-skill is—and what it is not
Cloudflare describes security-audit-skill as an agent-neutral skill for coding agents. It coordinates security reviews by mapping a codebase, investigating potential issues, checking evidence, and producing structured reports. It is software distributed through a public repository, not a physical security product or a standalone guarantee of protection.

The repository distinguishes between focused guidance and a full audit. Guidance mode addresses a specific security question. Full-audit mode is intended for an explicit request to audit or penetration-test a codebase, conduct a comprehensive review, or produce report artifacts. Simply loading the skill does not itself authorize a full audit or creation of files. The project’s current instructions describe these modes; because the repository can change, check them before relying on a particular workflow.
How its six documented stages work
The repository describes a six-stage workflow. These stages explain how the skill organizes an investigation; they are not independent evidence that it catches vulnerabilities at a particular rate.
#1 Best Overall
- Reconnaissance: Map the architecture, trust boundaries, input surfaces, existing evidence, and planned coverage. The workflow describes artifacts such as
architecture.mdandcoverage-ledger.json. - Coverage-led hunting: Use the coverage ledger to direct investigation and identify areas that have not yet been checked, rather than treating an initial pass as comprehensive.
- Candidate validation: Send candidate issues to a fresh verifier tasked with trying to disprove each claim.
- Structured output: Record findings with distinct statuses, including confirmed, needs-validation, and rejected, and validate the report structure.
- Independent record verification: Have fresh agents check the source claims in the final records; check material replacements again.
- Target-neutral reporting: Generate reports from verified records and the coverage ledger.
The practical value of this sequence is its emphasis on traceable evidence and explicit uncertainty. A candidate that lacks sufficient proof can remain marked as needing validation instead of being presented as a confirmed vulnerability.
What counts as a confirmed security finding
The project’s instructions require a concrete lower-trust actor, an accepted input or action, a crossed boundary, an affected principal or resource, and an observable security consequence. In the documentation’s words: “A candidate without a concrete affected principal, resource, or security outcome is not a confirmed finding.”
That standard is meant to filter out claims based only on a missing best practice, guessed deployment behavior, a generic crash, or an impact limited to the person who triggered it. For example, a suspicious input path is not enough on its own: the investigation needs evidence that the input reaches a protected resource or principal across a meaningful boundary and produces a security-relevant outcome.
How to install it and choose the right mode
The repository documents installation with the Skills CLI using this command:
npx skills add https://github.com/cloudflare/security-audit-skill --skill security-audit
That is the documented command, not a guarantee that setup works identically in every coding-agent environment. Consult the repository’s current instructions for supported setup details.
- Ask a focused security question when you want guidance on a particular design, code path, or concern.
- Request a full audit explicitly when you want the comprehensive workflow or its report artifacts.
- Before allowing any target-code execution, ensure appropriate sandboxing and local execution controls are available.
Safety boundaries and evidence the agent may not have
Source code alone may not reveal important deployment conditions, including proxy behavior, identity policies, broker access-control lists, deployment settings, or system topology. If a conclusion depends on one of those conditions and the agent cannot establish it, the claim may need environment-specific validation.

The project calls for bounded local evidence and sandboxed execution when testing is appropriate and controls are available. That makes the surrounding environment part of a responsible audit: do not assume that an agent’s access to code automatically makes executing that code safe. A report should distinguish what source evidence establishes from what depends on configuration or runtime behavior.
What the published evidence does—and does not—show
The project documentation describes a method, but the available sources do not establish measured accuracy, false-positive rates, or comparative effectiveness. No independent performance evaluation is cited here, so the six stages should be understood as the project’s documented process, not a validated detection benchmark.
Best Value
In a September 28, 2026 DEV Community article, Ishank Choudhary reported that the repository gained roughly 15.4k stars over seven days. That is the author’s dated popularity claim, not an independently verified count and not evidence of security performance.
Who may find the workflow useful
The skill’s documented structure may help teams that want an AI coding agent to organize a codebase review around trust boundaries, coverage tracking, skeptical verification, and reportable evidence. Its strongest contribution, as described by the project, is a repeatable investigation framework—not proof that a particular codebase has been fully reviewed or that any finding is correct.
Use its output as input to security judgment, especially where deployment configuration, runtime behavior, or authorization policy affects the result. Treat confirmed findings as claims that should be traceable to evidence, and keep unresolved assumptions visible rather than silently promoting them to facts.
