Today, tools such as Stockfish can help identify variations to examine, while online studies let players annotate and discuss games. That is useful support for learning, not a human-style explanation or a replacement for a coach.
How did old chess clocks work?
Before electronic timing, a chess clock solved a practical problem: ensuring that one player’s thinking time stopped when the other’s began. FIDE’s Open Chess Museum describes an early clock made by the Fattorini company in 1883 from two linked pendulum clocks; a later model began sale in 1887. A player tilted the mechanism so one pendulum stopped and the other started. The clock made time pressure visible and gave players and arbiters a way to manage it across a game. When did chess clocks become digital?
Digital clocks brought electronic timing and programmable controls to the board. FIDE’s arbiter reference says Dutch firm DGT released its first digital chess clock in 1985; FIDE approved the DGT FIDE model in 1994, and the DGT XL appeared in 2003. These milestones illustrate the transition rather than provide a complete history of digital-clock makers. FIDE arbiter reference
What changed for players and arbiters?
A digital clock can be configured for time controls that go beyond a simple countdown, including increments and multiple periods. FIDE’s equipment rules effective 1 March 2026 set requirements for supported controls, quiet operation, switchable audible alarms, retained settings, and clear battery-level and battery-type indications. For accuracy, the rules specify a tolerance of no more than ±1 second per hour during a two-hour test at room temperature. FIDE Handbook: electronic equipment rules

How did tournament technology expand beyond the clock?
Modern chess equipment can support the administration and recording of events as well as timing. FIDE’s 2026 rules address electronic boards and game transfer for electronic scorekeeping and live transmission. Alongside tournament software, these tools can help organizers manage player data, pairings, and results, while recorded moves can be shared beyond the room where a game is played. The shift is from a single clock serving two players to connected equipment that can support both competition and the distribution of games. FIDE Handbook: electronic equipment rules

How did Deep Blue beat Kasparov?
Deep Blue’s 1997 match win was a landmark in computer chess, but it came from a specialized, powerful system—not a machine learning chess in the same way a person does. IBM says Garry Kasparov won their 1996 six-game match 4–2 after Deep Blue won the first game. In the May 1997 rematch, the upgraded computer won 3.5–2.5, becoming the first computer system to defeat a reigning world champion under standard tournament time controls. IBM’s Deep Blue history
A specialized search system
IBM describes Deep Blue as using parallel computation, search, evaluation, endgame databases, and grandmaster consultation. Its 1997-era system was reported by IBM to examine 200 million chess positions per second and deliver 11.38 billion floating-point operations per second. Those are historical figures for Deep Blue, not a direct benchmark against current consumer devices or engines. IBM Research’s account describes the design as including a single-chip chess search engine, a massively parallel system, search extensions, a complex evaluation function, and a grandmaster game database. What does a chess engine do when it analyzes a game?
A chess engine evaluates positions and searches possible continuations to identify moves and variations worth considering. Stockfish describes its approach as highly optimized alpha-beta search paired with NNUE, an efficiently updatable neural network used for positional evaluation. It says the network is trained on billions of chess positions. These methods explain how the engine analyzes chess; they do not mean its output is automatically a clear lesson for a human player. Engine analysis can help a player revisit a game, inspect missed opportunities, and compare candidate lines. The learning comes from investigating the position and understanding why a variation matters—not simply treating an engine’s preferred move as an explanation. Lichess offers post-game Stockfish analysis, comparison with a database of master games, and collaborative studies where users can share games and positions, add annotated variations, and chat. These features support individual review and discussion; the cited platform information does not establish that engine analysis replaces human coaching. Lichess features

The progression is clear: clocks allocate time, electronic tournament tools capture and distribute games, and engines make analysis accessible after play. For learners, the most useful role of an engine is as a way to find positions to study—individually or with other people—rather than as a coach that explains every decision in human terms.
