ChatGPT can interpret a picture you upload and answer questions about what appears in it; ChatGPT Images can also make new images or edit existing ones. These are different tasks, and neither guarantees exact results. OpenAI’s current guidance lists limitations in reading small or rotated text, interpreting complex charts, counting objects, and locating details precisely. This article reflects OpenAI’s documentation checked on October 7, 2026.
Can ChatGPT understand images?
Yes. OpenAI describes image input as a way to add a picture to a conversation and ask ChatGPT to interpret its visible content—for example, to identify objects, examine a document, or discuss a visual. The answer is generated in the context of your prompt, so treat it as a fallible interpretation, not guaranteed recognition or human-like perception. OpenAI explains the feature in its ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ.

OpenAI says images are resized before analysis. That can reduce available detail or change the dimensions the model can use. The FAQ also says original filenames and metadata are not processed, so do not expect ChatGPT to infer details from them.

- Open a ChatGPT conversation and use the plus menu to add an image. You can also drag a file into the text area or paste an image.
- Ask a focused question about what you want to know, such as “What does the label say?” or “Describe the main differences between these two items.”
- If the image contains important small text, provide a clearer or enlarged view while keeping enough surrounding context to make it understandable.
The Image Inputs FAQ lists PNG, JPEG (.jpeg and .jpg), and non-animated GIF as supported formats, with a 20 MB limit per image. It does not give one fixed maximum number of images for every conversation: the amount depends on image size and the accompanying text. If an upload fails, try fewer or smaller images.

As of October 7, 2026, OpenAI says image inputs are available on Free and paid plans, subject to plan-specific usage limits and account settings. Availability and limits can change.
Can ChatGPT read text in a photo or analyze a chart?
It can attempt both, but precision depends on the image. OpenAI warns that small text may be difficult to read, rotated or upside-down material can be misinterpreted, and graphs with lines that differ by color or style can be hard to understand. Non-Latin scripts, including Japanese and Korean, are also listed as a weaker area.

- For text, use a clear image and enlarge the relevant words without cutting away surrounding context.
- For a chart, ask about a specific feature or comparison rather than relying on a broad interpretation. Check values against the chart itself.
- If one part matters most, direct attention to it with a focused prompt or a visible annotation, while preserving enough of the image to provide context.
Can ChatGPT create or edit an image?
Yes. OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT guide documents creating an image from a prompt in a conversation or through Images. You can ask to edit an image made with ChatGPT Images or upload an existing picture and describe the changes. The editor supports selecting an area and describing an edit, or describing the change directly in chat; you can also specify an aspect ratio.
- Start in a conversation and describe the image you want, or open Images and enter a prompt.
- To change an existing image, upload it and describe the edit. If useful, select the area to change, then explain the result you want.
- Review the result carefully. OpenAI cautions that the selection highlight is not always precise and an edit may affect areas outside the selection.
- Use the available options to download, copy, share, or revisit generated images. OpenAI says generation may take a few minutes depending on complexity.
OpenAI’s September 8, 2026 release note describes ChatGPT Images 2.5, including templates, mobile sketch-to-image, image editing and commenting, and prompt sharing. The note says templates are not yet available in Work mode and existing image-generation limits are unchanged. See the ChatGPT Release Notes for that dated update.

As of October 7, 2026, OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. A separate option called Images with thinking is listed for Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability described as forthcoming. These availability details are subject to change.

The official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT was retired on August 30, 2026, according to OpenAI’s July 31 release note and current Images guide. OpenAI directs users to ChatGPT Images for image creation and editing. The retirement statement concerns the official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT; it does not establish that every DALL·E-related product or API has been discontinued. The release note also says user-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected.

Why does ChatGPT get details in my image wrong?
Image interpretation has known weak spots. OpenAI’s FAQ lists difficulty with precise spatial localization (including chess positions), approximate object counts, panoramic and fisheye views, some captions or descriptions, and detail lost when an image is resized. A plausible-sounding response is not proof that a visual detail was identified correctly.

- Make small text larger without cropping away the surrounding information it depends on.
- Ask about one relevant area or question at a time; mark the area if that helps direct attention.
- Check consequential details against the original image or a reliable independent source.
OpenAI states: “The model is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images like CT scans and shouldn’t be used for medical advice.” Do not use image input to diagnose a condition or interpret specialized medical imagery.
What happens to uploaded images and data?
OpenAI says image content follows the data-use approach for the relevant product and directs users to product-specific information. It specifically states that ChatGPT Enterprise content is not used to train OpenAI’s models. That statement should not be generalized to all plans or accounts; check the current product information and account settings that apply to you.
