Poor coverage can make a modem transmit harder, repeat messages, retry connections, or spend longer using the radio. How much that costs depends on the network, modem, device settings, reporting pattern, and the rest of the device’s power use.
Why weak signal can use more battery
A cellular modem spends energy setting up a connection, sending and receiving data, and handling network signaling. When radio conditions are poor, the device may need more effort or more time to complete the same transaction. Possible costs include higher transmit power, repeated transmissions, retries, and longer periods with the radio active.

Nordic Semiconductor’s LTE-M/NB-IoT field-test account observed falling signal strength and rising output power at its 11–12 km NB-IoT measurement point. The connection was evaluated as poor, with retries and additional repetitions possible. That is an observation from one test setup, not a distance rule: obstacles, antenna placement, frequency, interference, and network configuration can make two devices the same distance from a cell behave differently.
Nor does a signal indicator translate directly into a predictable amount of runtime. Nokia Bell Labs’ empirical NB-IoT analysis notes that battery-life and latency targets can be achievable when coverage is not extreme or extensive repetitions are unnecessary. A particular signal value alone does not reveal how much energy an application transaction used.

What else determines cellular IoT battery life?
Battery runtime is the result of the device’s whole energy budget, not just its radio link. Important factors include how often it wakes and reports, payload size, connection duration, time spent connected, modem sleep current, sensor and processor activity, power-supply losses, battery capacity and chemistry, and environmental conditions.
- Traffic pattern: Frequent updates create more radio activity. Where the application allows it, batching or reducing non-urgent uplinks can save energy.
- Network behavior: Repetitions, retries, registration behavior, and connection setup time affect the energy cost of each report.
- Power-saving configuration: Power Saving Mode (PSM) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) can reduce energy use, but change how quickly a device can be reached. Their practical behavior depends on operator support and configuration.
- Device design: Antenna performance, enclosure attenuation, modem settings, and the current drawn by the rest of the device all matter. With infrequent messages and good coverage, standby or deep-sleep current may dominate; with poor coverage or frequent updates, radio activity can become the larger load.
AWS says a battery can last several years without replacement “given appropriate engineering and configuration of the IoT device.” That is a qualified possibility, not a general runtime guarantee for every cellular sensor.

LTE-M and NB-IoT: compare the deployment, not just the signal
LTE-M and NB-IoT are not interchangeable choices, and neither is universally more energy efficient or better covered. The right comparison includes mobility, latency, traffic, coverage at the installation site, and the features the local operator actually supports.

| Consideration | NB-IoT | LTE-M |
|---|---|---|
| Common fit | Often used for stationary assets; can serve challenging indoor coverage. | Often better suited to mobile use cases where mobility and handover matter. |
| Data and radio-on time | Suitable for many small, periodic messages; actual energy depends on network parameters and repetitions. | Can send data at higher rates; faster transmission can reduce radio-on time for a given payload, but does not guarantee lower total energy. |
| Deployment checks | Confirm coverage, latency, downlink needs, and the operator’s support and configuration. | Confirm coverage, mobility behavior, latency, downlink needs, and the operator’s support and configuration. |
AWS notes limited handover support as a consideration for NB-IoT. The GSMA’s energy-efficiency guidance also emphasizes that network parameters and measurement scenarios matter when comparing performance. Check the actual bands, roaming arrangements, and technology availability in the deployment geography rather than relying on a generic coverage claim.

Nokia Bell Labs’ 2017 analysis reported 99.9% LTE-M coverage for the outdoor and indoor devices in its studied Danish operator scenario, which included 10 dB of additional indoor loss. The same site-specific study reported about 95% NB-IoT coverage for deep-indoor users. These results describe that study’s network and assumptions, not coverage guarantees elsewhere.
Why long battery-life estimates need their assumptions
Battery-life projections are meaningful only when their traffic pattern, coverage conditions, device behavior, and network assumptions are clear. For example, Nokia Bell Labs’ 2019 modeled NB-IoT scenario used periodic 50-byte UDP packets and a ten-year battery-life target. Its modeled packet intervals varied with coverage-enhancement level:

| Coverage-enhancement level | Modeled packet interval for the ten-year target |
|---|---|
| 0 | More than 4 hours |
| 1 | 11 hours |
| 2 | 68 hours |
These are results for that study’s modeled periodic 50-byte UDP scenario, not a battery-life calculator for arbitrary modules, networks, or applications. Greater coverage enhancement can mean additional radio work; in the cited scenario, the modeled target required progressively longer intervals between packets at higher levels.
How to measure the effect in your own device
Test the complete design under representative network and installation conditions. A modem current figure by itself omits the power used by sensors, processor, regulators, and other device components, and may not match the modem’s behavior on the intended carrier.

- Define the real workload. Record payload size, reporting interval, downlink or reachability needs, latency requirements, and expected periods of inactivity.
- Use the intended deployment conditions. Test with the target carrier, bands, radio technology, antenna, enclosure, and installation location. Include the coverage conditions the device is expected to encounter.
- Measure current across the full cycle. Capture connection setup, transmission, idle or connected time, and sleep. Include the whole device as well as modem-level measurements where possible.
- Log radio and network diagnostics with power data. Track signal indicators alongside connection duration, repetitions, retransmissions, and registration behavior. This helps distinguish a weak-link cost from unnecessary wakeups or long connected periods.
- Check power-saving behavior with the operator. Configure PSM and eDRX for the application’s latency and reachability needs, then verify that the requested settings are accepted and work as expected on the network.
- Repeat after design changes. If you reposition an antenna, alter reporting frequency, or change settings, validate the result in the final enclosure and site. A lab or board-level result may not represent field performance.
GSMA’s guidance treats measurement scenarios and network parameters as part of evaluating energy efficiency. Nordic Semiconductor’s modem documentation likewise distinguishes radio operating states such as RRC connected and idle, and explains that current figures depend on conditions including modem, band, transmit power, voltage, and temperature. Use specifications as inputs to a test plan, not as substitutes for measuring the actual device.
Quick Recap
What to try when a device’s battery drains too quickly
- Check installation and antenna performance first. Look for poor placement, enclosure attenuation, or an obstructed location, then measure the effect of any placement change in the finished device.
- Review the reporting schedule. Reduce or batch non-urgent messages where the application permits; fewer wakeups and uplinks can reduce radio work.
- Inspect connection behavior. Compare transaction duration, repetitions, retries, and registration activity. A signal reading alone cannot show which of these is consuming energy.
- Review connected and sleep states. Minimize unnecessary time in connected states and confirm that sleep settings fit the device’s reachability requirements.
- Reassess the radio technology against the use case. Compare site coverage, mobility, latency, payload, and local network support rather than assuming NB-IoT always uses less energy than LTE-M or has better coverage.
