In the effective-information framework, a macro-level model can score higher when coarse-graining makes its dynamics more deterministic or less degenerate, despite reducing the number of states it represents. That offers a way to study higher-level patterns in selected biological and life-like systems; it does not establish that causal emergence explains life as a whole or that the whole has independent causal powers beyond its parts.
What causal emergence means
Causal emergence is a comparison between descriptions of the same system at different scales. One model represents individual components and their possible states; another groups those components or states into larger-scale units. The question is whether the macro model captures the system’s cause-and-effect structure more effectively according to a specified measure.

The word “emergence” can suggest that a whole has powers that its parts do not. The formal result is narrower: a macro description can have a higher score under a chosen measure. In the original framework, the macro level still supervenes on the micro level—it depends on the underlying micro mechanisms—even when it scores higher.

In a 2013 paper, Erik P. Hoel, Larissa Albantakis, and Giulio Tononi compared effective information (EI) across micro and macro descriptions. EI reflects how strongly interventions constrain possible past and future states, while also taking account of the size of the state space.

Why grouping can help—and hurt
Coarse-graining reduces the number of states in a model. That reduction is a cost in the EI comparison. But grouping can also make the model’s transitions more deterministic or less degenerate. If those gains outweigh the loss from the smaller state space, the macro description can have higher EI. In some modeled causal architectures, the EI maximum occurs at a macro spatial or temporal scale rather than at the micro scale.
The result is therefore conditional, not a rule that bigger-scale explanations are always better. It depends on the system’s transition dynamics, the scale being considered and the coarse-graining used to define the macro model.
What the score does not say by itself
A higher EI score does not, on its own, show that a macro-level entity exists independently of its components or exerts a new kind of force. It shows that the selected macro model fares better by this measure. Whether that amounts to genuinely novel causal powers is a separate philosophical question.

A 2020 paper by Rosas and colleagues sets out a framework for identifying emergence in multivariate data and reports case studies in three kinds of systems. These examples show how researchers can investigate higher-level patterns quantitatively; they do not demonstrate that every living system, or life in general, is explained by causal emergence.
Rank #3
| Case study | What was examined | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conway’s Game of Life | A modeled cellular system | That emergence can be investigated in a rule-based, life-like system | That the model is evidence about living organisms as such |
| Simulated flocking | Selected simulated flocking patterns | That some collective patterns can be analyzed at a higher level | That all flocking systems, or biological collectives generally, show the same result |
| Monkey motor activity | Representations of motor movements in the monkey brain | That the framework has been applied to empirical biological data | A universal explanation of brain activity or living systems |
These cases make it reasonable to say causal-emergence methods might help explain some higher-level biological patterns. They are selected examples, not a general demonstration about life as a whole.
What a causal-emergence claim depends on
A result is only as interpretable as the model used to produce it. A 2024 methods paper describes effective-information analysis as requiring a transition matrix for the micro-level dynamics and notes that finding or optimizing a suitable coarse-graining can be computationally complex.

- System and scale: State which components or variables make up the micro model and what is grouped at the macro level.
- Measure: Identify the quantity being compared—in this case, effective information—and what it captures.
- Data and time step: Explain how the transition dynamics were estimated and over what temporal interval. Choices here affect what the model can register.
- Coarse-graining: Describe how micro states map to macro states, and whether the mapping was selected in advance or optimized. Optimization can be computationally demanding.
- Evidence type: Distinguish a toy model, a simulation and empirical biological data; they support different kinds of conclusions.
- Meaning of “emergence”: Separate a more informative macro description from the stronger claim that the macro level has novel, independent causal powers.
Why a better macro description remains debated
In a 2021 philosophical analysis, Joe Dewhurst argues that effective information may establish an epistemic form of emergence: a macro description can be more informative or useful for understanding a system. That does not necessarily establish robust metaphysical emergence, in which higher-level causes are understood as fundamentally novel.
This is a critique of what the measure proves, not a settled refutation of the framework. The central distinction is between showing that a macro model scores better by a defined criterion and showing that reality contains irreducible macro-level causal powers.

How to read claims that causal emergence explains life
Ask what was compared, what counted as a cause, how the coarse-graining was chosen, and what kind of evidence supports the result. A higher EI at a macro scale can support the claim that a larger-scale description captures particular dynamics more effectively. By itself, it cannot support the much broader claim that causal emergence is a complete or unified explanation of living systems.
