Catalyst recycling on tape is a laboratory recovery method, not a property of ordinary tape. In a 2005 study, a fluorous rhodium catalyst dissolved in the hot reaction mixture and separated onto PTFE (Teflon) tape as the mixture cooled. Researchers transferred the catalyst-bearing tape into later reaction cycles to reuse the catalyst in ketone hydrosilylation.
How the tape recovers the catalyst
The method relies on temperature-dependent solubility. During reaction, the fluorous rhodium catalyst is soluble in the organic medium. When the mixture cools, the catalyst’s resting state separates from the liquid and deposits onto the PTFE tape. The tape can then be removed and carried into a subsequent reaction cycle.

The support is commercial PTFE thread-seal tape, commonly called Teflon tape. It serves as a carrier for this particular catalyst system; the tape by itself does not capture or recycle catalysts generally. The method depends on the catalyst’s fluorous chemistry and its behavior in the chosen solvent and reaction conditions.

Long V. Dinh and J. A. Gladysz tested hydrosilylation of cyclohexanone with PhMe₂SiH in dibutyl ether. Their no-tape comparison used 1 mol% catalyst at 65 °C and produced a reported 98% yield after eight hours. The authors washed and recharged the recovered catalyst residue for three further cycles, reporting 98% yield in each of the four no-tape cycles.

For the tape-assisted sequence, the researchers used 0.15 mol% catalyst and homogeneous reaction conditions at 55 °C. A representative reaction gave a reported 97% yield. The catalyst separated onto the tape during cooling, which was then reused in subsequent cycles.
How well did the catalyst hold up over repeated cycles?
Activity retention was excellent in tape-assisted cycles two and three, but fell substantially in cycle four. The authors attributed the later loss to catalyst deactivation, rather than an inherent failure of the tape recovery step. This distinction matters: collecting catalyst on a support does not prevent the catalyst itself from losing activity.

The study also measured material loss. Rhodium leaching was reported at 0.57% in cycle one and 5.3% in cycle two; total fluorous ponytail leaching over the first three cycles was 11.4%. In tests with other ketones—2-octanone, acetophenone, and benzophenone—the authors reported up to 20% activity loss by the third cycle. These results show why “reusable” should not be read as loss-free.
Using tape to deliver a small catalyst loading
The authors also precoated catalyst onto PTFE tape. This approach was presented as a way to deliver a low catalyst loading by tape length, rather than weighing a very small quantity or preparing a standard solution. The later article record describes precoating and catalyst release in subsequent cycles as well.

As the paper’s corresponding author, J. A. Gladysz, put it: “This approach provides not only a convenient means of catalyst recovery, but also of catalyst delivery.” That is a description of the demonstrated fluorous catalyst procedure, not a claim that a length of consumer tape can replace catalyst formulation or reaction control.

In this study, recycling means recovering the catalyst and using it again in later reaction cycles. Regeneration is different: Catalysts Europe defines it as restoring the catalytic activity of spent catalyst, typically through treatment that removes surface coatings or absorbed species. Whether regeneration is practical depends on what caused deactivation and how severe it is. The tape procedure demonstrates recovery and reuse; it does not establish that the catalyst can be regenerated after losing activity.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The reported yields, cycle behavior, and leaching figures apply to a specific fluorous rhodium catalyst, solvent, substrate, temperature, and laboratory procedure. They do not establish industrial-scale performance, broad compatibility with other catalysts, or lifecycle and environmental benefits.
A 2017 follow-up record notes that fluorous/organic liquid–liquid biphasic conditions can retain activity better than the tape procedure. A fair comparison between recovery approaches therefore considers more than whether catalyst can be collected: relevant factors include activity over repeated cycles, catalyst and ligand leaching, compatibility with the reaction, phase behavior, and the handling required to separate and reload the catalyst.
