A suspended carbon nanotube can act as a tiny mass sensor: when an atom or molecule lands on it, the added mass shifts the nanotube’s vibration frequency. Researchers measure that shift and use it to estimate the added mass. Experiments have demonstrated extremely small mass measurements in specialized laboratory devices, but the reported figures depend on the device and measurement conditions; they are not specifications for a consumer instrument.
How does a nanotube weigh a molecule?
- Suspend and measure the nanotube. Researchers suspend a carbon nanotube so it can vibrate as a mechanical resonator, then drive or otherwise measure its vibration. The resonator has a characteristic frequency.
- Let material adsorb. An atom or molecule that attaches to the nanotube adds inertial mass.
- Detect the frequency shift. The added mass changes the resonator’s frequency. A readout detects the shift, and researchers infer the added mass from it. The smaller the mass being measured, the more important it is to resolve a small frequency change.
The 2008 work describes determining inertial mass from shifts in nanotube resonance frequency; the 2012 experiment reported observing naphthalene adsorption events and measuring xenon binding energy. The ACS paper on carbon nanotube resonators and the 2012 Nature Nanotechnology report describe these approaches and results.

What mass measurements have experiments reported?
| Study | Reported result | Experimental context |
|---|---|---|
| Jensen, Kim and Zettl, Nature Nanotechnology, 2008 | Mass sensitivity of 1.3 × 10⁻²⁵ kg Hz⁻¹ᐟ², also expressed as 0.40 gold atoms Hz⁻¹ᐟ² | A room-temperature carbon nanotube nanomechanical resonator |
| Chaste and colleagues, Nature Nanotechnology, 2012 | Mass-sensing resolution of 1.7 yg, where 1 yg = 10⁻²⁴ g | An approximately 150 nm nanotube vibrating near 2 GHz; the experiment detected naphthalene adsorption events and measured xenon binding energy |
These are results from separate devices and studies, not a head-to-head comparison. The 2008 figure is a sensitivity with a bandwidth term; it should not be treated as a universal resolution or directly substituted for the 2012 resolution figure. The 2012 authors described 1.7 yg as equivalent to a proton’s mass. Neither result establishes that the same performance is routinely available under other conditions.

Is every nanotube mass-sensing approach the same?
Electrical nanotube resonators
The 2008 and 2012 studies report experiments using nanotube nanomechanical resonators. Their reported metrics apply to their particular devices and setups. The papers do not establish a standard instrument specification or a ready-made consumer sensor.
Optical plasmon-coupled proposal
A separate 2012 paper proposed weighing an atom with a coupled plasmon–carbon nanotube system, using optical probing rather than the electrical or electromechanical readout associated with nanotube resonator studies. It is a proposal, not evidence of a commercially available or experimentally validated product. Its theoretical calculation explicitly neglected thermomechanical and adsorption–desorption noise, which would limit performance. See the paper proposing the plasmon-coupled approach.

A related title, but a different arrangement
A 2006 American Physical Society March Meeting abstract was titled “Weighing Molecules with Carbon Nanotubes.” It describes a quartz shear-mode transducer coated with debundled nanotubes and exposed to gases, with adsorption and desorption observed. That arrangement should not be confused with a single suspended nanotube acting as a resonator. View the APS March Meeting abstract.

What can the measurement tell you—and what can’t it?
A resonance shift can support an estimate of the mass adsorbed in the measured setup. That is not, by itself, a complete chemical-identification result: mass alone does not establish the identity of an unknown compound. The cited experiments demonstrate particular mass-sensing and molecular-interaction measurements, not a routine, generally available workflow for identifying arbitrary chemicals.

- Mass sensitivity describes how a device’s response relates to mass and may include a bandwidth term, as in the 2008 report.
- Mass resolution is the reported ability to distinguish or resolve a mass change in a particular experiment, as in the 2012 result.
- A product detection limit would be a specification for a defined instrument and operating conditions. The cited research metrics are not such a product specification.
Because detection depends on resolving the frequency shift, performance is conditional on the resonator and measurement conditions. A small mass figure from one laboratory setup should not be read as a guarantee that any nanotube sensor can measure individual molecules in any environment.
Can you buy a nanotube molecule-weighing device?
The cited studies establish specialized research devices and a separate theoretical optical proposal; they do not establish a consumer-ready molecule-weighing instrument, complete kit, or product category. A nanotube material or general laboratory component is not equivalent to a calibrated mass-sensing system. Treat claims about a purchasable device as requiring evidence for the complete instrument and its specified measurement conditions.
